Apparently Ridley is the leader of the Space Pirates but he doesn't even look sentient.
How did Ridley come to be the leader of the Space Pirates? Was he born into royalty or something? Did he study and work hard towards being their leader?
what does that make kirby
He graduated from a prestigious pirate school, top right of his class. He wrote a thesis on screeching.
It's because Ridley doesn't work as a final boss really. He's supposed to be more of a 'constant' threat that could show up at any moment to ruin your day rather than the end goal.
It's why quite a few of the games have him show up earlier than his actual fight or heavily foreshadow him to trick you into thinking you're about to face him, only to fight him much later when you've practically forgotten about him.
Also, he's straight up Samus' nemesis, the games might have other people/creatures/big bads behind the main story, but Ridley will always be the bane of Samus' life, being in practically every single game.
And just from a straight up character design perspective, he could be one of the more visually interesting newcomers considering a lot of what we've had so far (With Greninja, Pacman and probably Megaman being the exception) is really boring.
Cute Mindless beast protagonist.

Also why do the Zebesians allow themselves to be led by a foreigner?!? Ridley clearly isn't from their planet or race!
Anyway, he was appointed by Motherbrain, who is sort of like the hive mind leader of the Pirates, who are more like bees than an actual alien race. This was implied in earlier Metroids, but outright confirmed in Other M (so it's not just a stupid Other M story point)
Ridley was probably a mercenary or general on his own planet, Motherbrain took an eye to that and convinced him to have a place of power on her growing empire of bee alien crab things.
Oh I agree, only point I was disputing was his character being as important as Ganon or Bowser.
I'd actually love a metroid game where Ridley was the main threat. Like he's cornered Samus on some space station/abandoned planet. Really center it around their hatred of each other.
That would be awesome. Although at this point, I would actually just love a Metroid game period. It's been four years since the last one, and seven years since the last good one.I'd actually love a metroid game where Ridley was the main threat. SA-X was one of the coolest things in a metroid game. I wish ridley were similarly scary. Then, and only then, would the other M fight have made sense.

This only ever factors in when Sakurai is thinking of potential fighters and all it really means is he is unlikely to consider random Zelda NPC #241. What really factors into whether a character becomes a fighter or not is whether Sakurai feels they'll make a good fighter. It doesn't really matter if Ridley is "more important" than Lucina or Palutena, if Sakurai doesn't think he'll be a good fighter his chances are as good as a Nintendog's.I have a hard time seeing what makes Lucina and Palutena such a compelling and necessary smash bros. characters, and yet here we are.

What even is Ridley's home planet anyway? What is this guy's backstory? It's so bizarre how the Metroid series has so much lore, and yet we know next to nothing about the second most important character. How big must Ridley's home planet be to support a population of Ridleys?
Ice.
Also players from the rest of Europe may attend, idk.
He's not though. Even when you realize that Metroid isn't Zelda or Mario, characters like Bowser are a more significant part to the Mario series than Ridley is to Metroid. "There wouldn't be a Samus without Ridley" doesn't really make him outrageously important or anything (at least not more than Bowser), especially since Metroid was never really story-focused. It's like saying the Stork is the most important non-represented Mario character because there'd be no Mario or Luigi without him.A lot of people like Ridley as a villain, not as a "badass space dragon". A lot of the Metroid mythos revolves around him, honestly. Without him there would be no Samus. Ridley is also the captain of the Space Pirates, even if he is rarely depicted as anything but a giant monster in his games. Which is weird, because they still go into all the detail about the space pirates rebuilding him.
But anyway.
Ridley - completely separate from Smash Bros - is as important of a Nintendo character as Ganon or Bowser.
Presumably MB had a backup save in the Space Pirate Mothership, and Prime never happened.I don't think this is technically true, Other M says a lot of stupid shit that doesn't make sense.
If destroying Mother Brain makes all of the Space Pirates revert to animalistic behaviour, why do they believe intelligently after she dies in Zero Mission? How do the pirates do anything during the prime trilogy?
Also if her suit is controlled by concentration, how the fuck do the events that kick off Metroid Fusion happen at all?
Other M says a lot of stupid shit that contradicts a lot of other games in the franchise so it's best to just ignore whatever it says.
Oh I have no idea if anyone is going. And cool, I forgot about Zenith. I may have to check that out this weekend.Oh, I forgot about Ice for some reason. Is he actually going, though?
Also, Zenith 2014 tournament thread (Smash 64, Melee, PM major tournament starts tomorrow)

If you could give ridley a similar role (tearing off the wall of the space station to try to throw samus out into space, appearing in a room when samus is vulnerable and you have to hide, etc), I think a lot of people would appreciate ridley more.
Wait a minute...Fusion is criminally overrated. The game would be perfect for me if that computer didn't kill the pacing.

Everybody commenting on my comment about Ridley being as important as Ganon or Bowser.

I just assume for Prime, Metroid Prime/Dark Samus tapped into the same mind altering doodads Mother Brain used to control the pirates, since she takes a similar role as Mother Brain in the Prime series.
Also worth plugging my disappointment Dark Samus is not playable again.
Yeah, that's pretty much perfect. You can stick 2 and Hunters under "Who cares?" tier.Alright, let's go. Metroid tier lists.

I love how Ridley is described in Melee. Something to the effect of "He may look like a mindless beast but Ridley is actually extremely intelligent!" Probably by Sakurai's own words too.
Hey, there has been a bit of commotion lately about a new possible leak with Smash 4. In this leak, its stated that newcomers will consist of Shulk, Duck Hunt Dog, Bowser Jr., and Dark Pit (as well as the return of Dr. Mario).
However, the main reputable leaker (the source behind salromano/gematsu), has made no mention of the latter three.
What explains this discrepancy?
The truth of the matter is that at least during Brawl's developments, the builds that foreigners playtest, don't have the entire roster on them.
Let me explain.
During the pre-Brawl days there were three primary leakers:
NyaseNya, who claimed:
- Brawl would have 35 characters.
- No Mega Man or Ridley
- Brawl would be delayed.
- Be on a dual-layers disc.
- That Captain Falcon, Ness, and Mr. Game & Watch would return.
- That Olimar and Toon Link are newcomers (and even described a bit of Olimar's moveset)
- Was an infamous troll obsessed with the buttocks of Nintendo females (particularly Peach)
ChaosZero:
- Said Lucario, Wolf, and Sonic would be newcomers.
- Mewtwo would be cut.
- Ganondorf, Falco, Sheik, Captain Falcon returning.
- Described the Dragoon item.
ShadowXOR:
- Said Marth, Ness, and Captain Falcon would return.
- Said ROB was a newcomer.
Why didn't any of these three people know the entire roster?
Well, its because none of them (or their sources) had access to builds that contained the entire roster. As a matter of fact, one of the leakers (ShadowXOR) mentioned to me that there were several characters in his build that were on the Dojo yet not in the copy his source was playtesting.
Why Sakurai/Nintendo did this is anyone's guess, but it was probably a contribution behind why Brawl's balance was so awful.
As to how this revelation is relevant to today, is this.
Gematsu/salromano claims one of our newcomers will be Chorus Men.
Yet Ninka/vaanrose's source claims Chorus Men wasn't in it.
Gematsu also makes no mention of Duck Hunt Dog, Bowser Jr., or Dark Pit (who to be fair could have been a last minute addition).
Its possible that Sakurai may again be giving foreign debuggers/balancers copies of Smash 4 with incomplete rosters (possibly to stop someone from leaking the ENTIRE roster).
If this is the case, then its possible that characters like Chorus Men, Ice Climbers, Wolf, and Lucas may still actually be in Smash 4.
Moreover, other leakers (like the 4chan leak also mentioning Duck Hunt Dog, Chorus Men, Bowser Jr., Shulk, Dixie Kong, Mewtwo, Ridley) might also be correct, despite not knowing about Dark Pit and Dr. Mario.
Personally, I am skeptical.
For one, I am not convinced yet on Ninka/vaanrose's source. There needs to be something major from their leak to be confirmed (namely the confirmation of one of their newcomers outside of Shulk, or the ability of Shulk's moveset confirmed, or the confirmation that Olimar has Alpha alternates).
The second thing, is that I don't feel confident Sakurai is reprising his pre-Brawl strategy of handing incomplete rosters for balance to foreign branches of Nintendo this time around. He is actively striving for balance this time, and as far as I am aware of there were no characters on the Ninka/vaanrose build that has been confirmed that has been absent.
We have only 1.5 months left so all that is left is a waiting game.
In the worst case scenario our remaining newcomers are:
- Shulk
- Chorus Men.
or
- Shulk
- Bowser Jr.
- Duck Hunt Dog
- Dark Pit
- Dr. Mario
in a slighly better scenario
we get all newcomers from Gematsu and Ninka/vaanrose (which we simply gain Chorus Men as a newcomer, though possibly Wolf and Ice Climbers don't get cut). Both sources say Lucas is gone.
In the best case scenario (in which the 4chan leaker is also reputable), we also get Dixie Kong, Ridley, and Mewtwo.
In times like this its imperative to keep our expectations low.
I hope my information at least sheds some new light on the leaks going on, and that it at least offers some clarity on the situation at hand.
Smash 4 will soon be released so hopefully this debate will soon come to an end.]
The video where ROBs bring in Subspace bombs was probably earlier on.
August 21st was when R.O.B.s were confirmed to be in cutscenes, and September 19th was when they were confirmed to be fightable enemies in the SSE. So it was a decent while before launch.
