I will say that if Dark Pit was in I think he would've got a splash screen, because I think every newcomer will have an intro like that. Him not having one could've been Sakurai wanting to hint at/highlight him as an alt but not a full newcomer.

Yeah, I have a same sensation as you did. Dark Pit could be Pit's alt or stage boss.

Isn't Game and Watch a good argument against this, though? Like Dark Pit, he's a character shown in a reveal trailer who didn't get officially unveiled on the official site as a playable character and hasn't been shown since. If anything, I think it's more likely that they're both unlockable characters.

Did Captain Falcon get a splash screen? Do any of the returning people? No!

That doesn't sound like a moveset to me.

The point is the Monado can do something no other sword in Smash can do. Not to mention the fact that it looks completely different than any other sword in Smash, as does Shulk himself - he's not one of those infamous "blue-haired swordsmen," nor does his outfit look like anyone else's.

If you don't want Shulk in because the character doesn't appeal to you, that's fair, but you can't say that he has no moveset potential or that he's redundant because of all the other swordsmen.

You're right it is not. but that's not exactly what you said.

Buster: powerful attack with a larger blade. Deals double the damage to Mechon and Machina.
Enchant: strengthens the weapons of the party. Allows normal weapons to damage Mechon.
Shield: generates a barrier that protects the party from enemy talent arts of the same level or lower.
Speed: gives the target a greater chance to dodge physical attacks.
Purge: ranged ether blast that inflicts Aura Seal and nullifies Spike effects.
Armour: reduces physical and ether damage taken. Percentage (30%-75%) depends on this Art's level.
Cyclone: damages all enemies around the user and inflicts topple on enemies suffering from break.
Eater: strips away enemy buffs and causes bleed damage in a frontal cone.

Add ability to see the future as well.

You say it's just a simple sword. Seems like a lot more potential for a moveset than swinging and jabbing to me

Also of note that's only half of Shulk's abilities.

I don't mean a splash screen, I mean an entry on the website. Game and Watch was shown in the Pac-Man trailer but he didn't get an entry on the site and he hasn't been so much as mentioned since. By the same logic that Dark Pit isn't playable because he was in the Palutena reveal but didn't get officially showcased, I could make a case that Game and Watch isn't actually playable either.

Hmm. Yoshi is the odd one out. The rest of them are now fully separated characters when they weren't before.

Well, I think it's more of Yoshi getting revamped with new stance, pose and some moves being upgraded. Or Sakurai have heard the fans' yarning for Yoshi.

The Monado is no different from a regular every day sword. Being a LAZERSWORDZOMGWTFBBQ doesn't make it special. And yes I beat Xenoblade all 60 hours of it. The Monados only special abilities are shoot a beam, super extend, and that aura burst thing called cyclone other than that its just swinging a sword.

Let's go over the Monado's power set, with spoiler text for the stuff that is introduced later:

Monado Buster: Massive energy blade attack with a lot of power and area of effect.
Monado Enhance: Boosts multiple people's attack power and let's them ignore Mechon resistance.
Monado Shield: Completely negates an enemy's special attack (protects whole party).
Future Visions: let's you see the future and defend against lethal attacks before they happen
Monado Speed: A massive increase to speed and dodging ability
Monado Purge: A ranged energy wave that strips away enemy auras (persistant buffs) and damage shields
Monado Eater: A shadowy stab that removes more buffs and does DoT damage
Monado Armor: Defensive increase for the entire party
Monado Cyclone: Wide area attack that knocks enemies off their feet.

I think that is quite a few distinct moves, more than enough to build a unique moveset off of.

EDIT: Removed spoilers since someone else beat me to it.

So... Say the competitive community don't take to this game. What I say is after next year's EVO which will have the game for sure, there's a huge drop off in participation.

Would anyone be mad if in like 2016/17 they released a "Meleefied" version of Smash 4 that caters more to the competitive scene in regards to balance, skill ceiling, and even items?

I for one would buy any version of smash, and if it's a chance to get a new game earlier, I'd love it.

okay fine

Monado Buster: Massive energy blade attack with a lot of power and area of effect. (The beam sword item covers this attack and if it was the full size it would have to be a final smash.)

Monado Enhance: Boosts multiple people's attack power and let's them ignore Mechon resistance. (Possible optional special with other buffs as custom alternates)

Monado Shield: Completely negates an enemy's special attack. (Reflector)

Future Visions: let's you see the future and defend against lethal attacks before they happen (Counter or slow time final smash)

Monado Speed: A massive increase to speed and dodging ability (buff option)

Monado Purge: A ranged energy wave that strips away enemy auras and damage shields (medium range special shot)

Monado Eater: A shadowy stab that removes more buffs and does DoT damage (Random normal tilt or smash)

Monado Armor: Defensive increase for the entire party (buff option)

Monado Cyclone: Wide area attack that knocks enemies off their feet. (possible final smash or special)

Sounds kinda boring Riki would be better.

I'd buy it in a heart beat if smash 4 was that bad, but I don't think Smash 4 will drop off from the competitive community that fast.

I mean, it's going to be better than Brawl, which had thousands of people trying to turn it into the competitive successor to melee when it clearly wasn't.

It will fall off quicker than melee though, no way a smash game is ever lasting that long again with the current mindset.

One thing I'm looking forward to in smash 4 is that in the very worst-case scenario it will be better than brawl, so when the "brawl supporters" move on from it because there's a shiny new game out, they won't be trying to defend a competitively terrible game.

Though if Smash 4 turns out to be worse than Melee I'm going to have to deal with a lot of "change = improvement" annoyances.

Impossible. If Brawl had a competitive following this certainly will.

But speaking hypothetically I'm sure many people will be happy with Project MU3DS. Not me however, Melee was just too fast and too much for me even when I had all the gaming time in the world during high school. Mostly though I just don't like to bother with most anything other than the official versions. Getting Bowser again in Project M with the crappy one hit Bowser Bomb and no flying slam irked me.

Question: I was thinking of how the Villager represents so many AC concepts in his move-set, but does he use the fishing rod in any way?

I know this is a preference thing... but how can you not enjoy being able to cancel bowser bomb into a jump and then an aerial? It allows for so many great followup opportunities.

Brawl HAD one that died kinda quickly imo. Meanwhile Melee is growing again. I'm not sure how far this will go along. I think it all depends on how much big names support it. If they bail, then their viewership will follow I think.

I'm talking about an official Nintendo Made version of Smash 4 that has new mechanics to help make sure it's fun to watch as well as viable competitively. Not to say that it's not fun to watch right now. I love seeing Smash 4 matches, and competitiveness is something that's tbd.

Nope, and it's kind of baffling. Fishing is a really big part of Animal Crossing. He could have at least used it in his celebration instead of the net.

Well I don't want Ridley, I dont want K. Rool and I didn't want Palutena, but I'd gladly take the three of them over Dark Pit as a separate character. Please Sakurai don't ever do that.

Sakurai could probably make 18 different colored Pits with slightly varied movesets before he could put those 3 in the game. It's really not a great comparison, wholely different characters take significantly more effort than clones.

Huh, that is odd. But I'm not complaining, since Villager is otherwise so thorough representing his series and all of its concepts.

Well, I guess next time around when I'm clamoring for playable Isabelle, I can say, "Give her a fishing rod grapple recovery!"

Assuming Smash 4 doesn't gain ground, and pretending that this is a likely scenario, yeah, people would be mad. People get mad about anything having to do with Melee and the competitive scene (both casual and competitive players). I mean a lot of people are already mad at the likes of Project M, but maybe something official from Nintendo would calm them down a bit.

But it'd sure be awesome, and heck yeah, I'd buy it. I would also LOVE to see a Nintendo-developed Smash Bros. game with the competitive community and feedback in mind. The end product would probably be something on another level of amazing.

We've only seen one victory stance and for all we know there could still be two more to reveal much like the previous versions.

I guess melee physics could be a feature of the hypothetical ssb4ultimate. Have a toggle for it that is referred to as turbo mode or whatever.

What? Since when were people mad at Project M?

There have been one or two people who called it "disrespectful" or something like that.

On the other hand, the only thing the fishing rod really makes sense for is a grab, but the net has that covered. It would only be incidental (i.e., it couldn't be his B-Up,) since there are no longer any characters with only tether recoveries. From a series representation point of view, it's strange to not have the fishing rod, but when you look at the rest of his moveset, there's not much for it to actually do.

And I totally agree that Villager's moveset does a great job representing his series. In this one character, Sakurai managed to capture almost all of AC. It's really remarkable.

What? Since when were people mad at Project M?

"Stop trying to make Brawl like Melee!"

"Brawl is a fantastic game that shouldn't be changed!"

"Maybe instead of trying to make Brawl like that shit Melee, you should just learn to adapt to change!"

etc, etc, I've seen a lot of hate over PM for "ruining" Brawl or about how it shows "Meleefags" are insecure or something.

Also like someone on the last page mentioned, quite a few Brawl defenders consider it to be disrespectful to the infallible vision of sakurai.

Regarding the topic of Dark Pit:

He could be a regular alt. He could be a stage hazard. He could be a stage boss. Or, he could be playable.

Let's focus on the idea of if he were playable. How could it work?

Well, first things first, he has to be visually distinct from Pit, alt colors included. I think this can be achieved, first and foremost, through his WINGS -- Pit, and all of his alts, will always have white wings, while Dark Pit, and all of his alts, will always have black wings.

Second, take the Sonic the Hedgehog approach -- much like how Sonic and his alt colors are varying shades of blue, Dark Pit would always be "dark" by making his alt colors lighter and darker shades of black. Pit, meanwhile, could come in a whole rainbow of colors.

Beyond that, tweak the animations to reflect cockiness in Dark Pit, and add extra effects like red sparkles to Dark Pit instead of the blue sparkles we see on Pit.

Now, as for what a playable Dark Pit could offer: He'd essentially be a low-effort, Lucina-style clone that would give Sakurai the opportunity to incorporate more of the many, many wonderful weapons he created for Kid Icarus Uprising. After all, in that game, Pit encounters Dark Pit on a number of occasions, and each time Dark Pit is wielding a different weapon. Swap out Pit's Guardian Orbitars for another set of orbitars, with different properties; swap out his Upperdash Arm for another arm that handles differently; and so on.

Essentially, playable Dark Pit would be a way to represent more of the weapons from the world of Kid Icarus Uprising. There were more than 100 of them, IIRC, including some truly clever designs and effects. I'd love to hear the sickening roar of the Ogre Club, for example, a fleshy spiky club that Dark Pit uses against you in Chapter 6 of Uprising. :-)

Oh, yes I mean an official Nintendo developed title. I kinda disagree with your statement about people getting mad about things regarding Melee and the competitive scene. Other than the odd ruleset, I've heard nothing but praise about the Smash 4 Invitational. I actually think it was the most watched thing on Twitch while it was on.

I also don't think taking feedback from competitive players and applying what works to the game would be a bad thing. Mortal Kombat for example is a game that a great many casual players enjoy, but it also was built with competition in mind as well.

That's what I want from smash. Something built for both crowds and everyone in between.

I'm watching Zenith and it seems that a lot of project M people are excited to play Smash 4. I think this game will be fine competitively.
