Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread XI: Where 90% correct equals 100% wrong

I'm watching Zenith and it seems that a lot of project M people are excited to play Smash 4. I think this game will be fine competitively.

Oh, I know for a fact it will shoot out of the gate HUGE! But I wonder how long it will be given a chance. So many were excited to play Brawl as well.

Personally, I'll support the game as long as there's a scene to support it in (as well as Project M, and recently Melee too), but who knows what the future holds.

I'd give smash 4 3 years as a base and then the rest is depending on how open they are to patching the game and what the final release is like

Longer if there's going to be post-release content and it actually turns out to be good.

A bit less if there's no patching, much less if it also turns out to be trash.

This wouldn't be including the pockets of people that try to stick with the game if it does turn out to be trash, there will always be contrarians in the competitive community that try to say it's not that bad, usually because they're not that good at the other games.

Final Smash: Power of Pandora

Dark Pit uses the power to make energy rain down from above. Acts exactly like the three sacred treasures.

Regarding the topic of Dark Pit:

He could be a regular alt. He could be a stage hazard. He could be a stage boss. Or, he could be playable.

Let's focus on the idea of if he were playable. How could it work?

Well, first things first, he has to be visually distinct from Pit, alt colors included. I think this can be achieved, first and foremost, through his WINGS -- Pit, and all of his alts, will always have white wings, while Dark Pit, and all of his alts, will always have black wings.

Second, take the Sonic the Hedgehog approach -- much like how Sonic and his alt colors are varying shades of blue, Dark Pit would always be "dark" by making his alt colors lighter and darker shades of black. Pit, meanwhile, could come in a whole rainbow of colors.

Beyond that, tweak the animations to reflect cockiness in Dark Pit, and add extra effects like red sparkles to Dark Pit instead of the blue sparkles we see on Pit.

Now, as for what a playable Dark Pit could offer: He'd essentially be a low-effort, Lucina-style clone that would give Sakurai the opportunity to incorporate more of the many, many wonderful weapons he created for Kid Icarus Uprising. After all, in that game, Pit encounters Dark Pit on a number of occasions, and each time Dark Pit is wielding a different weapon. Swap out Pit's Guardian Orbitars for another set of orbitars, with different properties; swap out his Upperdash Arm for another arm that handles differently; and so on.

Essentially, playable Dark Pit would be a way to represent more of the weapons from the world of Kid Icarus Uprising. There were more than 100 of them, IIRC, including some truly clever designs and effects. I'd love to hear the sickening roar of the Ogre Club, for example, a fleshy spiky club that Dark Pit uses against you in Chapter 6 of Uprising. :-)

I'd imagine Dark Pit would probably have stronger attacks, higher jumps, and a better Up B. Makes sense, since his whole shtick is being able to fly without Palutena. I'm guessing he'd be more light weight and maybe slower to balance him out, though.

Every character should be Sonic.

Am I doing it rite?

Let's be honest with ourselves -- Dark Pit's Final Smash would probably just be the Three Sacred Treasures. "Mind if I borrow these?" would become the new "personally, I prefer the air."

I'm annoyed at how it seems to be held as a holy gospel by a very vocal minority and how stretched and skewed their 'vision' has become. But I'm not mad about it.
It's gospel to a majority of competitive players, which is its purpose. Casual players have Roy and Mewtwo to gain from it.

It's funny how weak the three sacred treasures are on higher difficulties. They're only benifit aside from being flashy and awesome is that they kill those blasted ornes lol.

Guys, Dark Pit will probably just be an alt for regular Pit. I highly doubt that he'll have a separate character slot.

Agreed. Lucina is at least a totally different person - different hair, different face, different clothes,
different boots.
Dark Pit is essentially just a recolor, isn't he?

THIS. SENTENCE. IS. FALSE.

It kind of annoys me too.

But at the same time, I think it forces Sakurai and his team to try to do better than a fan modded game. I.e. Alt costumes may or may not be a direct result of Sakurai not wanting to lose to fan modelers.

Ehh... I think alt costumes are just extensions of what Wario had in Brawl. I think Wario worked out well and his system was really popular, so they tried to extend it to other characters.

So the 1st clone of Marth and the less-developed prototype of Lucario? I guess some would consider that a good benefit.
Casuals love Roy and many would sacrifice Marth for Roy's return. Also, how is Mewtwo a Lucario prototype? They share one special move and their normals are unrelated.

Regarding the possibility of Dark Pit as a stage boss on Palutena's Temple -- I think that could also be interesting. He could aggressively stalk players across the massive stage and fire super-long-range weaponry. Could be neat.

Of course, for Palutena's Temple, I think the (Uprising spoilers)
Chaos Kin
would make an awesome and totally fitting boss. It could retreat when it's on the ropes and then sneak back for an ambush, possessing whoever it captures. :-)

Anything new revealed since the Robin/Lucina trailer?
Off-hand, the most notable items that come to mind are a Star Fox stage for WiiU, set atop the Great Fox from Star Fox Assault; a better look at the Tomodachi Life stage on 3DS; and the reveal of the N's Castle stage for 3DS (based on Pokémon Black and White), and Paper Mario stage for 3DS (featuring stage transitions from a Sticker Star area to a Thousand-Year Door area, and possibly more). Also, Takamaru was confirmed as an Assist Trophy, and there's a new mode combining Home Run Contest and Target Smash where you beat up on a bomb and launch it into a cluster of targets to try and destroy as much as you can.

Duck Hunt Dog and Bowser Jr. in the Koopa Clown Car with Koopaling Alts is a rumor being vouched by Smashboard mods.

A Nintendo Canada employee said Rayman was playable.

Takamaru is an Assist Trophy.

Star Fox Stage hinted at for Wii U. Like the 64 level.

Tomodachi, N's Castle, and Paper Mario (changes between at least Sticker Star and TTYD) 3DS Stages.

Phillips now own Ridley.

Didn't say it was fun, just said it's what I think is going to happen.

Seems weird to show off someone and then not talk about them if they're going to be a newcomer. Stranger things have happened though, so I won't count anything out.

Oh I agree with you. Been thinking that since the trailer. Just a jest.

Yeah who knows.

But I'm sure Sakurai is well aware of Project M's existence. So who knows if he tried to surpass or ignore it.

Oh cool N's Castle is a stage? Hope it has some BW music with it. Thanks
