I think he's Andre. Kappa

Haha, so mean!

Yeah thats the biggest reason.

And I just saw this on my FB feed.

HNNNNGGGNNN THAT'S AMAZING. I love that Mega Man's getting promoted like that. God, I wish I was in Japan right now to see that in person. When I was there earlier this year, the coolest game ad they had everywhere was for Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD Remaster. Which was pretty damn great, to be fair, but this...

It's nice that Megs is getting so much attention considering this is probably the last video game he's ever gonna be in.

How dare you.

I believe. Smash is the beginning of his revival!

God damn.

Can someone just mail me the signage here when the game has been released so I can frame it or something? The Megaman fan in me is bouncing off the walls at how cool this is and how much of a dream come true Megaman in Smash is.

Right? Couldn't have said it better myself. Even more than a year later, I still get giddy whenever I think about or see Mega Man in Smash... it really is a dream come true, like you said! Also, +1 for mailing me signage. Thanks SmashGAF!

Jesus. If merely existing in Brawl was enough of an excuse for Sakurai to make his own KI game, I hope somebody inside Nintendo uses this hype as their own excuse to make a mega man collaboration happen.

I don't care what format. Sidescroller or 3rd person interpretation from Retro. Absolutely any interpretation by EAD Tokyo. Intelligent systems putting off everything else for a 2d mega man metroidvania. Alpha Dream or IS making the first good mega man rpg since whenever battle network jumped the shark. Platinum games getting desperate enough to sign up to make another game with Nintendo and doing a Stylish Megabusting game in some kind of bewildering 3-way collaboration that we'd all swear was an april fool's joke posted in the wrong month.

I hate that smash threads gut the rational part of my brain.

I would be perfectly happy with any of those options. I'd also be perfectly satisfied with something a little more realistic, like an X9 done in the style of X8 (minus the 3D stages) or the SNES trilogy, or a new Battle Network or Star Force title on the 3DS.

Actually, Star Force 4 on the 3DS could be REALLY cool. Star Force 3 was great and really where the series found its groove, and the behind-the-back battles could look really sweet in stereoscopic 3D!

bleh, going to be another slow day today.

When's this bloody direct going to happen, Sakurai? I want to see some extended footage of the current build.

I hate how often I'm accidentally up late enough to see the PotD before bed....

Is it silly of me to think that a Nintendo developer initiating a strange and quirky collaboration using Mega Man seems more likely than getting a straightforward mega man sequel in any form?

Also, was it wrong of me to cynically assume all the star force games were bad?

After today's update showing even more how legendary pokémon always get the cool stuff I wonder who can be excited when a normal pokéball appears: "Oh, I'm sure it's another Munchlax. I won't even try to use it

Didn't they say regular Pokeballs could also have legendary Pokemon?

We have only 27 PotDs remaining until launch. 26 stages have been announced when Brawl had 41. 36 characters have been announced, and we are missing about 10 vets + any possible newcomers.

Sakurai...

Didn't he already say he wouldn't be revealing every detail about the game like he did with Brawl?

I don't remember that but if it's true then I hope the chances of getting meh pokémon aren't as high as in brawl. One "Goldeen" is good, more is too much. Even then, having a masterball pop will be really exciting with these effects.

I honestly thought this game would have a maximum of 40 characters when it was first announced but it looks like we'll be closing in around 50. It's crazy to think Smash 5 might have 70+ characters in it.
.

50 is the upper limit really I think, a 70 character roster just sounds bloated as hell and will probably result in general gameplay/modes being compromised.

I'd prefer less gameplay modes and more characters personally, considering that's the main draw of smash, with the main game mechanics and the vs mode being what keeps me coming back.

50 being the upper limit for even the next game sounds really boring considering the characters we have currently and the ones we're missing.

Pic of the day. Victini and Xerneas are both support Pokémon. Victini's Victory Star boosts the attack of whoever throws the Poké Ball, and also prevents flinching. Xerneas's Geomancy increases the launch power of all fighters, but exceptionally raises it for whoever had the Poké Ball.
Calling for Xerneas doesn't seem like a good idea anymore lol

If only there were some way to, I don't know, cut out some existing characters. Perhaps some characters who are too similar. Perhaps one of the ornithological variety.

I don't think the roster would ever get beyond maybe 55ish characters. If you remember with Brawl, Nintendo was prepared to make the game without Sakurai and simply keep the roster as it was in melee. If we get another super smash bros it'll probably keep the same roster, maybe change a few characters (like the third-party ones), and just add new features.

We won't be seeing a game with a roster that has over 60 characters, I can almost guarantee that, no matter how far in the future we get. Even Marvel VS Capcom 2 topped out at 62 characters if I remember correctly. And that game was just recycling sprites from previous Capcom fighting games (with a few exceptions).

That guy kinda just took someone else's animation and reuploaded it with a different song and name.

I guess he used the actual gif from the guys tumblr rather than just straight up ripping the video at least.

Should totally check out the animators tumblr, though. He's really good.

^ Also this shows just how much better Fox's head looks when his ears are angled downwards rather than straight up like they are in sm4sh and when his head is short rather than long

So apparently a lot of people think Bowser is top tier. Is it because of his Down B eating shields? People will just move out of the way and punish. Medium-high tier at best.

That's pretty much the only reason people think he's top tier it seems.

He's definitely mid tier though, he looks a good character but I think he's going to be steam rolled by some of the faster characters because he's just way too punishable.

No, it's not silly. Sadly, that is more likely. :( But they did just release that Rockman StreetPass puzzle just recently out of nowhere, so we do at least know they've got Mega Man on their mind. Nintendo has become like his unofficial second home (which, honestly, is right where he belongs)!

And about Star Force... I guess it was, kinda? I dunno, it depends on what sort of Mega Man fan you are. If you're the "purist" kind who only likes the platformers (Classic/X/Zero/ZX), then nah, I can see why you'd feel that way. But I'm a big fan of Mega Man in all his forms and I loved the Battle Network series, and the Star Force series was just an (admittedly not as good) 100-years-in-the-future extension of that.

To be fair, though, your cynicism wasn't entirely unfounded. Star Force 1 was pretty "meh" and Star Force 2 was only somewhat better (mainly because Geo was done being an insufferable prick), but suffered from an exceptionally dumb scenario. Star Force 3, though, really was very good; sadly, it was too late in the game for a lot of people to notice or care. It introduced some really compelling gameplay systems (like the Noise level and transformations), had a darker and more compelling scenario/story, and actually took a lot of the characters' arcs to their logical, satisfying conclusions. It also had a great soundtrack, mostly unlike Star Force 1 and 2. Honestly, if you have the time or desire, you should track down a copy of Star Force 3 and play it if you liked the Battle Network games. You don't really need to know what went down in SF 1 and 2 to enjoy it, and you can read a wiki if you really care! But yeah, basically it was like the Battle Network 3 of the Star Force series, obviously a very good thing.

Credited the guy in the description. I'm sure he got permission to do so.

Quite a few of you have already partaken in the questionnaire I put up a few days ago; only three days in and I've already received over 130 responses! I really wasn't expecting such a wave of responses, and as a result I'm going to implement a few changes to the voting process.....

I cannot believe tiers are being discussed on a game that isn't even out yet. The only build that's been played is not final and wasn't played anywhere near long enough to have any accurate interpretation formed from it.

Seriously, really jumping the gun guys.

I agree. This sort of theory-crafting is probably best suited until after people start getting their hands on the game, the Japanese 3DS launch at the earliest.

Right now we're not even sure about everything characters can do. It's hard to really compare them when we don't know how they work in a vacuum, let alone with one another.

I'm absolutely hype for Twitch streams once the game hits Japan, though.

To be fair, if custom moves didn't exist I'd say people could start talking about where abouts characters will be on the tiers, just because I highly doubt the game is going to be changed much by release.

But the custom moves completely change how matchups are going to work so it could be a bit moot to talk about them.

What's the big deal? It's just speculation. Most of this thread is devoted to possible character inclusions despite virtually no information to work with.

Quite a few of you have already partaken in the questionnaire I put up a few days ago; only three days in and I've already received over 130 responses! I really wasn't expecting such a wave of responses, and as a result I'm going to implement a few changes to the voting process.

With everyone only voting for one veteran character, there's been a lot of "clumping" of characters with the same amount of votes (meaning, there's multiple characters with 7 votes, multiple with 4, etc.); this would lead to a pretty boring countdown to have constant 4-way ties being announced. It also seems a little lame for people to only show their support for a single character, as most people have at least a few favorites they like to jump between. Therefore, I'm going to let everyone choose their top 3 favorite characters to vote for.

How this will work is in the new questionnaire I have linked below, it now asks who your first, second, and third favored characters are. Depending on which rank you give the characters you choose, they'll get a different amount of votes. For 1st, the character will get 3 votes. 2nd will get 2 votes, and obviously 3rd will get 1. If you don't have 3 characters you want to vote for, feel free to leave some of the questions blank. Hopefully this will help make a more accurate and interesting final results list. Most wanted newcomer is still limited to 1 choice.

Now, if you've already participated in the previous questionnaire and you don't participate in this one, your vote will still be counted. If you really only care about one character, don't worry about doing anything as I'll keep tallies from the previous poll. If you have already voted and want to add 2nd and 3rd characters to your choices, come vote in this one; there's a choice in the first question labeled "I've already told you!" that will let me know you've already voted. I will still double check all responses to make sure no one is double voting. In addition to that, please PM when you've voted. Going forward, I'm going to require you to PM me to let me know you really did vote and someone isn't just putting your username in the questionnaire. A little silly to think someone would do that one a for-fun poll like this, but this is the internet...

So, all that to say, I think this will end up creating a more exciting countdown as we approach the Japanese 3DS release date. The last day to vote will be August 16. Starting the next night, I'll start revealing the winners (20th-1st) every POTD. This will mean 1st place is revealed on the last POTD before the Japanese launch. Hopefully, this will add to the hype leading to launch (as if we need any more) and help determine who is the most popular character in the SmashGAF community.

Looking forward to seeing all of your choices! Everything so far has already been very interesting and surprising. Also, as a little tease, I may even set up a little betting pool to see who can predict the top 5 choices. Can't promise that for sure yet, but I may be able to do something simple like a free commissioned art piece as a prize (gotta keep the prizes free!).

IMO, assist pokemons are the most boring updates lol. But it's cool to see that there's some variation to the effects assist pokemon can have!

It's (mostly) baseless speculation. People discussing it don't treat it like it's speculation either, they word things in a very matter-of-fact way, as if they have some sort of insight from their time watching videos or perhaps playing an hour or two of the game at some event.

Melee took years to be dissected into what it is today, as did Brawl. There is absolutely zero reason to be discussing something so decisive as tiers and balance in a game that isn't out and has only been played individually for a handful of hours. Everyone is an armchair developer every time a new game comes out, at the very least it'd be nice to prolong that attitude until after the game comes out.

TL;DR? It's just silly. Speculate about something that isn't baseless, like Duck Hunt Dog and Ridley. I'd take another 400 pages of "Ridley is too big" over "Bowser isn't top tier he's mid-tier at best".

I feel like you're secretly-not-so-secretly talking about me in regard to my Mega Man post earlier today, at least partially? I actually completely agree with you; I was just trying to vocally push back against some of what I feel is inaccurate, premature speculation that Mega Man is crap, based on my playing the hell out of him over the course of couple hours (collectively) at E3 and Comic-Con. I shouldn't have used tier discussion to do it, though, because you're right - discussing tiers at this point at all is silly.

People want Duck Hunt Dog?

No I'd be kind of bothered if he is in, thats truly a scraping the bottom of the barrel. Even K rool should be in Smash before someone like Duck Hunt Dog. Never mind half the assist trophies like Dark Samus, Takamaru, Saku, Starfy, etc should all be playable before that stupid dog.
