He also has no projectiles and no reflects, that's a big hole in his versatility right there.

His range is about 1/3rd of the stage, though, he needs neither and has counter for projectile spammers.

Projectiles are not a problem for Shulk, its his downtime on Monado-swap more than anything, and his attacks are punishable if you really miss or just spam. But that's also what makes him a monster in the right set-up and the hot-swap strengths is a huge boon to the character but makes his skill ceiling incredibly high with a steep learning curve.

Shulk doesn't need a reflect; his NAir/FAir/BAir eats most of them. He's definitely a solid character IMO; mid-high tier easily. He's a spacing heavy character with huge range that admittedly can be punishable if not spaced right and he does have his fairshare of bad matchups (I really hate Diddy lol), but his Monado Arts give him a ton of versatility.

I love using him so much lol

Counter is fairly good... counter... to Diddy. Diddy is light and Vision will kill him at mid-high %s.

Any good resources for becoming good at Smash? Have been playing the series since it started but it was always with friends and family so it has become clear that I am terrible and don't know how to play.
 
Sonic deals like no damage on his attacks, huh. I never realized how weak he is per attack but I suppose its made up for it with his speed and spam.
 
I've held off commenting on this game for a while. After being in the lab, I just feel it's less consistent than Melee and even Brawl. Grabs and shields not working as they should. Knock backs being so huge across the board, and across all characters that combos are even harder to pull off. And just knock back itself is just too much. Nobody should get KO'd from 75-80%. No Johns aside, it just feels....off to me.

I like it, it's fun. But I couldn't see myself taking this game seriously like I did with the last two games. Maybe I'm just older and don't care as much, but I don't see the competitive community taking Smash 4 all that far. I could be wrong. It's still early.

Knock backs being so huge across the board, and across all characters that combos are even harder to pull off. And just knock back itself is just too much. Nobody should get KO'd from 75-80%. Knock-back in this game for kill is tiny, knock-back for combos is high but that's more-a-do with the low hitstun. Things work as they should, though, for the game. They've changed some frame data on shields and the hitboxes have their timings and some of them have deceptive boxes that people need to learn.

The transition from Melee to Brawl was massive. Everyone had to adjust significantly. It was completely different. This doesn't appear to be as much of a shift when it comes to basic mechanics. It's more of the subtle and nitty gritty stuff. But I don't ever remember calling out so much bullshit and being this angry with Brawl way back when. So many times, even after winning, I sit there confused as to what just happened and just saying ,"WHAAAT" out loud.

Things that you should be able to punish you can't and things that you shouldn't you can. So many characters have much landing lag. Even if you land a perfect dair with Falco, most of the time, it's almost impossible to combo from it because your opponent wakes up from the hitstun before Falco can make another move. That makes no sense. What's the point of implementing hit stun in the first place then? It's that sort of stuff that irritates me and I'm sure pisses off a lot of other folks

What moves are causing you such confusion? I've not seen many hitboxes be inconsistent, some have an extra few frames of "jump" like Monkey Flip or Zelda's always deceptive f-smash.

But most everything else is quite consistent.

What the hell, is there any way to escape ZSS combos? I kept getting thrown then immediately after Up B'd (which I could never air dodge with Bowser) or kicked with I don't know what aerial (I didn't have the time to air dodge either with Fox)... I hate this character so much, if I dodge the paralyser I get dash attacked or acrobat kicked.

Do you use Jump and Speed? I seldom find use for them.

So I pinged a few people asking what the deal with this was because it's exactly the kind of tiny, stupid thing people will talk about

Most people had no idea what I was talking about, one guy said he had heard this song was supposed to go in all versions, but there was an oversight with the contract where they had not secured international rights with the performer or there was some problem that they overlooked exponential payouts for international release and the song had to get removed for other versions

Grain of salt, because it's "I heard from someone who heard from someone," but a pretty ridiculous oversight if true

Every character has lagged and lagless moves, you have to know which ones. That's not the game being inconsistent. As I said, hitstun is low in this game and so a lot of laggy moves won't combo into other moves, even at high %. However they have other moves which will combo or throws which will combo. (Some u-tilts are trivial to combo into themselves.)

They also changed shield frame data that if a shield blocks an attack, the frame-lagg on it is basically canceled giving the defender frame advantage on block. They are however locked into shield animations or jump/roll otherwise if the shield blocks nothing.
 
Wow. Proper Equipment sets can break this game.

I did the 9.0 no death on my first try after buffing up the Dorf with defense and Vampire equipment and was high kicking my way to glory. It was really anti-climatic actually. I'll come back to it down the road without abusing equips.

I also found out I really overthought the Jigglypuff 6 minute All-Star. I was trying to kill everyone with Rest with no luck. Then I tried spamming the C stick. Faces were palm'd that day.

We've had entire characters that only spoke Japanese (and still do) lmao

Yeah, basically this. Not to mention, Falco already has among the lowest lag after his moves. The fact that other characters actually have options to combat that as opposed to just being mercilessly combo-ed (basically anyone who wasn't a speedster in Melee) is a good thing

I find the people who have the biggest issues with Smash 4 are people who used characters like Fox, Falco, Shiek and Marth (and Metaknight) since they can't speed blitz other characters into combos as easily anymore
 
Fought a lot of Japanese players today, and I got rekt. Only won like 5 games in 20 tries lol. Makes me feel depressed... :p

Quick question. Would you guys say this game is lots of fun and worth it if you don't play online or with friends? Like a complete single player experience. Would it be worth purchasing for that?

I ask cause I am in a weird work situation where I can't really be in the same place consistently and I probably won't have internet connections (or at least reliable ones) for the next few weeks or so.

Guys, I'd like to ask you something:

What do you think of Shulk? Both as an opponent and using him.

I've been using Shulk a lot and this week I fought 2 friends (One a smash veteran who has the 3DS version) and another who only played Brawl + this one (and only a few hours with me)

Both ended up complaining Shulk is overpowered, either because his counter was too easy to use (I'd argue it's them who are predictable), because of the monado arts and Shulk's ability to rack up damage quickly with Buster and KO easily with Smash or a combination of the two.

What's your opinion?
Very annoying to play against. Up and Down Smashes have ridiculous range.
