Some digging found THIS old compiling of the fanmail responses which lists the characters we know reached Sakurai, but it's obviously a very limited sample size (~300 people), not everyone suggested/remarked on characters, and those that did just mentioned one.
For reference, the "most wanted" character was King Dedede with... 5 votes. I remember this being talked about back in the day but I've never really thought it worth much.

Hey guys, this is Sakurai. I've hacked this guys NeoGaf account to bring the internet exclusive information.
First of all, none of the characters are cut, in fact were tripling the amount of characters in the game.
Also, yes Ridley will be playable character in the game.
He's big, I mean really big. So big that he is also a stage. THATS RIGHT, Ridley is the series first literal playable stage. How will that work, well you're just going to have to take my vague statement and speculate.
And for the last time Geno won't get in!!!

Man I have been out of the loop in SmashGAF.....sleeping schedule is so messed up. At least Sakurai and Co. will be back in a day. Wonder if we'll get a special pic. Will probably be what a poster suggested before: Same battlefield stage with the 4 iconic characters doing a pose. At best we will get something something Mariokart stage related.

As for the Zelda series, Gannondorf desperately needs a special where he fires a ball of energy. Of course, the two links (but no-one else) can simply knock it straight back at him. Balanced? No. Awesome? Yes.

I'll believe a rumor if they manage to correctly predict something absurdly obscure like the guy who predicted the dragoon parts. Most character predictions are too "easy".

They post them both on Miiverse and on the official website. Miiverse comments usually (but not always) go up first, with a comment from Sakurai if there's anything gameplay related to note.
There haven't been images for 2 weeks.

If I recalled correctly, we got three legit leaks at GameFAQs during Brawl hype. Early leak was Dragoon and few stuffs that I can't really remembers.
