Super Smash Bros Wii U & 3DS Thread 4: New Year, Old Arguments

Ridley looks kind of adorable when he's shrunken down like that.

Ridley design leak?

Man I decided to play a bit of brawl to release hype.

Cause I finally figured out how to work Ness his recovery I decided to play him and lucas a bit, something I've never done.

They ... they feel remarkably different to play as.

Different from each other?
That's because they aren't clones like others would have you believe

Not that I ever played as Ness that much across the series but Lucas pretty much ensured that I never used Ness again.

It's almost like most of the so-called clones actually have very different play styles and are mostly only complained about by players who can't tell the difference between Fox and Falco's Shines. And that applies even moreso in Brawl, where all the so-called clones have very different moves despite any possible visual similarities.

Weird.

Ness is the best, don't hate. :K

Just having a little fun before I head to work. That whole "Captain" Toad thing is still in my head from a few weeks ago.

Hard to draw with a mouse (I really need to get my tablet, sooner than later). The gaps between actual character announcements bores me. :/

When switching from Melee to Brawl it's funny to see how much longer it takes to KO your opponents in Brawl. It seems like matches lasted much longer because everyone could last to much higher percents before getting ringed out. Maybe it's just in my head. I didn't time it or anything.

It's not in your head. Brawl's combination of negligible hitstun and a bunch of characters having preposterously good recoveries (MK, ROB, Pit, etc etc etc) meant that you lived for approximately forever in that game.

Fingers crossed that Smash 4 doesn't make the same mistakes.

After going back to Melee and Melee style physics with Project M, it's frustrating playing Brawl seriously. Still fun for 4-ways, but not much else.

I'm glad Sakurai is aiming for an in between the two.

No, it definitely takes longer in Brawl. Probably because of the generally slower pace/not as much combo ability, and stuff like easier ledgegrabbing and more recovery options.

Not to mention that shieldstun is reduced making it so being overly defensive is much less punishable and the fact that you can infinitely air dodge. (I doubt the latter will change for Smash For.)

I personally don't get why people even play Brawl or Melee for 1v1 in a competitive way. Melee is so polarized to a set of characters. And Brawl takes too long and is polarized also.

Project M's balancing has been great and made many characters viable for 1v1.

Honestly, he should be aiming for something between 64/Melee instead.

64 master race.

64 was weird because it's more offensively orientated than Melee, yet it doesn't really feel fast at all

yeah well only tourney losers care about those minuscule differences in move properties /s

I hear ya. I'm a Mewtwo-stan, so despite the lack of balance across the board in Melee, I can still do some damage with him in most cases. No one has touched Brawl since Project M 3.0, at my home though.

I loved 64, but Pika owned everyone so hard. It would be cool to have that as an unlockable in Smash 4. Know your roots.

I love teleporting off the stage to meteor smash characters trying to get back to the stage then float back with telekinesis.

And ofcourse, peach's second jump, f-throw, peach bomber buff, and that down smash. <3

Mewtwo is really fun in PM. Don't really like him in Melee though. His forward throw in Melee is awesome though.

His forward throw looked awesome in Melee but those projectiles always seemed to mostly miss. (Or I'm misremembering, it didn't have much kill potential compared to PM's)

You take that back........ the truth hurts! ;_;
It's okay. Pretty much all of the characters I played in Brawl weren't very high tier; Sonic, Kirby, Captain Falcon... and I used to play Ganondorf in Melee, but my God, what did they DO to you in Brawl, 'dorf? I don't play competitively, so tiers don't mean much to me, but even still, I could tell something was off with Ganondorf. He just felt so... awkward, like most of the moves I liked using for him (like his Side-B) had horrible cooldowns attached to them.

It was the same for me with Melee. The only good characters I actively used were Ice Climbers and Captain Falcon. In comparison, the likes of Ness, Kirby and Mewtwo weren't so hot, but I didn't mind.

It doesn't take playing competitively to realize that everything feels like shit in Brawl.

Not here. Been playing since launch without a problem. :)

Speaking of his yo-yo smashes, it's weird how charging them doesn't add any knockback or damage in melee/brawl.

Ness hasn't had good yo-yo smashes since 64 which sucks because I love flails so much in fighting games. Yet another reason why I'll champion Mike Jones until the day I die. I even made a moveset for him back in the day that played this up.

I'll post it later if anyone wants to see it.

Oh I know, but I'm just surprised how much different the hitboxes on their smashes are.

Lucas has a really lovely up smash.

And down smash. And neutral air. And back air. And grab range. And Up B. And Side B. And neutral B. And down B. And forward A. And crouching A...

Really, the only thing that I was ever "eh" about in his entire moveset was his forward smash just because up and down smashes felt a lot more ridiculous even uncharged.
