Super Smash Bros Wii U & 3DS Thread 4: New Year, Old Arguments

So just saw the monday update, and the japanese translation with it. Every time Sakurai opens his mouth this two games seem to be less and less ambitious than its predecessor.

Isn't the fact he's, y'know, releasing two different games for two systems ambitious?

Not doing full sprites for unconfirmed characters I decided to do a little
something for fun.

I'm okay with loads of different characters, but I decided to create
a (relatively) balanced roster that'd fill in a number of slots equel to the brawl newcomers. (minus the 4 already confirmed guys)

I also made these sprites ridiculously tiny, just cause I can:

I recognized all of them.

Palutena > Little Mac > Dark Samus > Mewtwo > Dixie > Medusa > Mii > Majora Mask Link > Pac Man > Ridley > Excite Biker

Wait, who is that with the white hair?

Some people are near-sighted you know D:

I'm starting to think that this thread could serve as a valuable insight for new, undiscovered forms of mental insanity. I'm sure a large portion of you aren't being entirely serious, but you guys know how low the odds are that Sakurai shows anything good. It's like you're asking to be disappointed every day at 3 AM XD

"But it's Smash's 15th anniversary!" Why do you guys do this to yourselves? When will you realize Sakurai only wants to watch the world burn? What hole are you filling up with the meager excitement you experience once in a blue moon when he actually shows something cool off?

Not to mention the willingness with which the thread allows itself to get taken away by leaks that are clearly fake. He's too big, seek help.

could be worse
there could be a Perfo in this thread

Dark Samus and FE Awakening MU?

You know you're my hero, right?

I've really been coming around on playable Robin in the last two days. I kinda blame Smashboards. It also helps that Robin is cool looking as fuck (dat hooded jacket and tome look) and has mage potential.

FE:A really is not helping me to pick any singular newcomer and stick with them. :lol

15 year anniversary huh, I was 10 when smash brothers n64 released 0_o time flies

I was 9 and funnily enough, I didn't know anything about the game until my sister started asking if we were going to get it at the time. Back then, I was more focused on getting Yoshi's Story of all things. :lol

For the first year that we had the game, she was also consistently handing me my ass in it with Samus, then I went all training mode monster and from that point forward, none of my siblings like playing Smash 64 with me anymore. :lol :lol

Sad to say but everyone but my brother started drifting away from playing games beyond a round of Mario Kart or watching someone else play between my bro and I. It's one of the reasons why I have very fond memories of the first Smash and a lot of NES-N64 titles.

what kind of armors did you used for robin wear? I'm used to seeing black, purple and yellow Robin.

\o/

Though I only guessed due to the white hair. I don't recognize Robin being in that kind of armor, but that probably is due to it being small and I haven't played Awakening since last year. It looks more like Marth's armor from the small sprite.

There's yellow and purple in there, the yellow just looks like strong highlights (which makes people think of armor) cause the sprite is so tiny.

I used dark grey for the black parts to avoid it meshing with the background & my darker shade for white has a blue tone. (which might make his leggings/white underclothes seem blue rather than white at such a small scale)

Ahh, OK. Thanks for the explanation.

Alright, I see that.

Forgive my outburst from yesterday; I'll just keep on truckin'.

I kinda hoped this would be Captain Falcon, if only to give one of those rumors credence. Unsurprised that that isn't what we got, of course, but nevertheless, it'd have been nice to have the last of my typical character choices confirmed (Sonic and Kirby being the other two).

By the way, can somebody explain to me what Dark Samus would bring to the table? I try not to begrudge people for their character choices, but I never really understood that one.

Dark Samus is big on teleportation (and that amazing cloning move from Corruption), and her Phazon moves present an opportunity for a damage-over-time reliant character (with some trapping moves on the side). She's said to be physically unstable, which would be an excuse to make her a lightweight with better agility than her rival.

Most of what I think of her moveset being comes from this fight.

Dark Samus is the closest thing to a recurring antagonist Metroid has after Ridley and Mother Brain. The Prime trilogy is a HUGE part of the Metroid franchise and Nintendo's last decade as a whole, and deserves to be represented better in Smash, I think.

As a fighter, Dark Samus has very little in common with Samus apart from the name and an arm cannon. DS moves almost entirely by levitating, more like Mewtwo, is extremely fast unlike Samus, and can teleport. Basically, the idea that Dark Samus would be a clone of Samus from a gameplay perspective is due only to a lack of imagination, since the games depict the two characters as entirely different. It would be closer to a very fast Mewtwo than a Samus clone.

There's some stuff in there I agree with, though I'll also add that as someone not fundamentally opposed to clones: she's easily one of the best options still open.

That aside, I like how she kinda floats around rather than walking like Samus. It makes her feel very different and "light" in comparison.

I just don't see any reason for Avatar/Robin to be playable. I know he/she's important in Awakening, but Chrom is technically still considered the main character (he's on the cover art, promotional materials, crossovers, et cetera). And in Smash Bros., the only one-off characters that are playable are the main protagonists. That's excluding the fact that the character is a customizable avatar -- and don't compare that to Animal Crossing, since you play as a villager in every game in the series.

Because he'd use magic

That, and the avatar could eventually become a legacy feature repped in multiple FE games. So possibly more staying power than a lord.

And in addition to magic it would be cool to see some other weapons too to get the full FE weapon triangle repped.

I didn’t even know Co-Star Mode existed in Super Mario Galaxy 2, but this is clearly the inspiration behind Rosalina & Luma’s gameplay mechanic. The assist Luma can even shoot Star Bits like in this game.

I picture Dark Samus' arm canon firing liquid Phazon that would remain on the stage as a trap if it missed

I wouldn't count him out. He's clearly the most unique, yet still important potential Fire Emblem newcomer. He would also represent the Tactician/Avatar character, which has appeared in three games now (but fleshed out the most in Awakening). And it's this tactician who actually commands the characters within the game and devises the strategies. It's probably the best way to represent the essence of Fire Emblem, especially since Robin is capable of both wielding weapons and using magic, which are both staples of the series, not just swords as seen with Marth, Roy, and Ike. He's pretty much the main character along with Chrom, anyway. I'd even argue that's he more of a main character than Chrom in pretty much every aspect except marketing, because he is the character that YOU take the role of, and he's arguably more important to the plot, too.

He probably doesn't appear in much promotional material because of his customizable nature and due to the fact that he's supposed to be YOU, but that doesn't mean he can't be a playable character in Smash Bros. He has defaults. They put Villager in the game with his defaults, too. I know you said not to compare it to Animal Crossing, but why not? Yeah, Villager makes sense because you take the role of that character in every Animal Crossing game, but Fire Emblem isn't really like that. Fire Emblem is pretty much made up entirely of one-off characters, and Robin is arguably a/the main character of Awakening, and he represents the franchise better than anyone else from the game, which is important. I can imagine Sakurai choosing Robin for the same reasons he chose Pokémon Trainer.

Chrom wouldn't really add anything new. I mean, sure, they could always make a different move set for him, but I can't imagine him being much different from Marth, and I don't think he's what the Fire Emblem franchise deserves for a third playable character in Smash Bros. We need a character that can better represent the essence of Fire Emblem, and Robin is that character.

The desperation here for a direct / new character update was getting overbearing and a tad annoying. Way I see it, it'll happen when it happens. If leroidys is to be believed, then Smash is coming soon anyway so the trickle of info will definitely improve.

Dark Samus, the Evil Cole of Super Smash Bros.
It's a shame Retro named the character "Dark Samus," because Dark Samus is actually a whole different beast from Samus. Gliding all the over floor, scattershot projectiles, etc. Her movement and abilities are completely different.

And yet, because she's called "Dark Samus," she will always feel like an afterthought, a half-baked character concept. I blame all of the other "Dark" characters that are afterthoughts and half-baked character concepts.

They could call her "Metroid Prime" - that was her name before mimicking Samus's Phazon suit.

I have a question for anyone interested: Do you use only one or a handful of characters in Smash as opposed to most/all of the roster? If so, why?

For me personally, I use everyone because the basics are very similar from character to character. It also makes the game last longer and IMO makes you more effective as a player.

Was about to say that myself. They're definitely the same character (I forget if the game is subtle about this or explicitly states it, but it's easy enough to put two and two together), might as well play it up.

Im sorry for wanting Direct so soon because I'm hyped to see what Sakurai have done with newcomers or Snake coming back. Yeah, the pace is getting better and I'm sure that we are getting good amounts of information this month.

I have no clue where people got this whole "Smash Direct" on Wednesday or Friday thing from.

Sometimes it feels like people make this up to make themselves feel good.

Almost all of them. But I'm better with a couple.

I don't really like Sonic though. A bit 2fast for me.

I honestly use everyone, so I can learn every single thing I can from them. Which in return I can help out other people, teaching them things or even help me do better against the characters since I know what they have going for them.

I usually have an average of 3-4 main characters in games.

I always main random button even it could give me bad match up characters against other players.

Oh it wasn't me? All I did was hoping that we would get Smash Direct today for 15th anniversary. Not that I expected to see it tho.

Don't sweat it, you were just trying to generate discussion. I think more substantial info will be coming soonish anyway so its not worth working ourselves up over a lack of info at the moment. Info on Snake might not happen until March near MGSV: Ground Zeroes release.
