Super Smash Bros Wii U & 3DS Thread 4: New Year, Old Arguments

Don't dedicated Directs tend to pop up in the weeks preceding a game's release? I wouldn't expect a Smash Bros. Direct until we have a solid release date.

Pokemon had a dedicated one for its announcement and a few mini ones long before release. It's a different beast, but there's nothing stopping them from dropping a few lines.

I have a question for anyone interested: Do you use only one or a handful of characters in Smash as opposed to most/all of the roster? If so, why?

For me personally, I use everyone because the basics are very similar from character to character. It also makes the game last longer and IMO makes you more effective as a player.

Oh man
I started with MK in Brawl, then picked up Marth (Melee main) and Falco
just like Pokemon, I always land on the top tiers apparently

It only had one between the reveal Direct and release. It was in September and revealed Pokémon Bank, as well as Mega Venusaur, Mega Charizard Y and Mega Blastoise.

That cracked me up. Thank you.

I confused some news dropping in a standard direct as their own a few times, I guess. Either way, there's precedent there to do one for Smash if they want and it's not like they wouldn't do one if they wanted to for the sake of "consistency."

But all the rumors about one happening today were just the internet circlejerking itself into a frenzy.

I do have my mains and go tos for competition, but I play everyone and especially the lower tier characters to experience their cons and find ways around them to add to their pros. It's also so I can understand matchups as well as keep things fresh as you said. The random button helps.

Due to what happened with Brawl, I've had a few people e-mail me in recent days asking about them and asking me to reveal stuff (I honestly know nothing about these games at this time). The frenzy is crazy.

I mained Ness amd Pikachu in 64, Peach and Pichu in melee, and my mains for brawl were Dedede, Ness and Olimar, but most times my friends and i play looking enough to rotate through the whole cast.

I would use everybody because it is more fun, though I'm better with some characters than others.

Random is my main. For better or for worse.

Don't sweat it, you were just trying to generate discussion. I think more substantial info will be coming soonish anyway so its not worth working ourselves up over a lack of info at the moment. Info on Snake might not happen until March near MGSV: Ground Zeroes release.

Hmm. March? That's interesting.

Am I allowed to ask how exactly you found out about Lucario?

I play with everyone since generally they're all fun to play.Of course, I still have my favorites (Olimar, the Mother kids, Dedede, etc.)

Random, always. Unless someone challenges me to a "competitive" match (I have some stubborn friends who absolutely refuse to play with items and such, just 1v1 on Final Destination, ugh...), in which case I usually use Toon Link.

I've always played about 3-5 characters regularly. I try everyone else out but I don't use them routinely.

if they insist on FD then they're not really competitive

or they're playing someone like Ice Climbers and are trolling you

Even if I managed to, I wouldn't leak. I made a mistake back then in even hinting.

Good. It's not really worth to be in trouble with Nintendo if you leak something. If I knew the leaks myself, I wouldn't share it with anyone because I would like to see everyone's reactions when they saw the reveals rather than spoiling them with a list. It's just me.

It's a shame Retro named the character "Dark Samus," because Dark Samus is actually a whole different beast from Samus. Gliding all the over floor, scattershot projectiles, etc. Her movement and abilities are completely different.

And yet, because she's called "Dark Samus," she will always feel like an afterthought, a half-baked character concept. I blame all of the other "Dark" characters that are afterthoughts and half-baked character concepts.

The real shame was that she was so similar to Samus. So similar that it was easy to forget that you were dealing with Metroid Prime. Dark Samus as a name unfortunately suited her perfectly. They should have had her retain more of Prime's qualities.

As it was, Dark Samus did actually feel like a comic book reject and it kinda spoiled the stories of MP2&3. The SA-X from Fusion showed precisely how you could create a great Samus doppelganger, too, so that made me even more disappointed.

Dark Samus could've been a cool dude™ if she/he was in Prime 2 final boss form the whole time. Prime 3 made a mistake in bringing the suit back I think.

Hence why I say "competitive." These people don't play in tournaments or anything, but they refuse to play free-for-all matches with items turned on and all that because they've been lead to believe that it's the "wrong" way to play Smash Bros. You could call them "casual-competitive" players, lol. They only try to play competitively because they think it's cool and the "right" way to play the game.

On that same topic, does anyone else have any friends that refuse to play Smash Bros. without instating their own weird rules? I have one friend who will not play Smash Bros. without setting the damage ratio to the minimum. It's just...weird, lol. I've never known anyone else who even touches that setting. I mean, sure, I understand messing with the settings if you find it fun. That's why they're there, after all. But refusing to play multiplayer matches with your friends because the settings aren't exactly as you're used to...lol.

I actually prefer the Prime 3 version, if only because it seemed more like MP was becoming fully cognizant. Her suit would have made an amazing equippable power suit variant though.

It will be Evil Cole times infinity because every Ridley fan would have a meltdown.

I wouldn't.

I mostly want Ridley because we'd be getting an actual new Metroid character. Who it is is mostly immaterial (with the exception of one bastard.) I like the character, but I can accept substitutes.

As far as playing every character goes, I did that for Melee's single-player, if only to get a feel for how each character fights, but no, I only stuck with a few characters (IIRC I regularly used Roy and Ganondorf for a while, but eventually settled on Kirby and Captain Falcon). I didn't even put that much effort into Brawl, since some characters I just never really "got", regardless of how complex they actually were (Snake, Olimar and ROB all come to mind, for varying reasons; Snake's trap mindgames, Olimar's reliance on how many Pikmin he has out at once, and ROB... actually, I'm not sure why Rob never sat well with me, he just didn't).

Project M wise, I use . . everyone. Except maybe pit. Though honestly. after watching Armada rock it at Apex, now I understand what a great Pit looks like.

Melee was always fox, but I was terrible back then. If I ever pick it back up it'll probably be different.

Brawl wise, Olimar is far and away my best character. I understand him more than anything. But I love playing a wide array of others; gannon, dedede, ike, marth, rob and so forth. Wario and Pit are all that I really never choose if I'm just messing around.

You know people are going to bitch and moan if Dark Samus is announced. People see clones everywhere.
There's a dude on Smashboards who claims to have played a demo at Namco's headquarters (lol), and he says Adam from Other M is in (lmao). I can't even imagine the rage if that happened.
