Super Smash Bros Wii U & 3DS Thread 4: New Year, Old Arguments

lol. 150% for Mega Lucario would be terrible, because, remember guys, there are kids who like Lucario and want to power up and be awesome, but won't ever get to see it because of you selfish pro players.

It's really a terrible idea.

Simple, have his percent reset to zero but slowly rise back up.:D

I can't control it! Dark phoenix arises!

Have his final smash be that of the Mega Evolution, then once he transforms he doesn't get KO'd at a certain percentage. It has increased! Then have his Adaptability play a role as well. I don't know, just throwing things out there.

Are you sure you want 1? That's Brawl speed.

I would like between 5-9, but It look like it might be 2 in the trailers.

I think Sakurai was really smart placing Smash 4 between Brawl and Melee. (4-6)
Not too fast so new players and the casual audience can enjoy the game but not too slow so hardcore/real fans can play it competitively at a decent speed.

I'm not sure if it's actually BETWEEN. It's more of on Brawl's side. I would like it to be right on between tho.

I asked this in the IRC, might as well ask here too:
From a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being Brawl speed and 10 being Melee speed, what speed do you want for SSB4?

I say Project M/64
Probably not as slow as Brawl, but honestly I wouldn't notice the difference between it and Melee if it were right around 5/6-ish.

100% maybe, 150% seems kinda steep. I think it will be his FS though.

I think FS is way more likely, but going mega at 100+% is a much cooler idea to me. It would be neat if Lucario were a character that isn't particularly effective at killing, but as a trade-off was incredibly difficult to KO.

The Mewtwo fan backlash is ridiculous. To be frank though, almost every single revealed character so far has had tons of gaffers complain about "personal fav x" not making it in. It makes me not want to read character reveal discussions at all :/ they're toxic.
A bit late to this, but I have to say I agree. Go to Reddit's Smash Bros. subreddit and read the comments on any thread of a revealed character and you see comments like "Where's Ness/Captain Falcon/Mewtwo/Roy???" and "Getting worried about Ness/Captain Falcon/Mewtwo/Roy". Getting sick of that shit.

Anyone noticed Sakurai has now revealed more characters than Brawl had starters?(counting roster spaces here)

Yeah, We just passed the number of slots for starting character, but we need three more characters to match up with number of characters.

21 slots
25 characters.

The Mario and Megaman fight from the E3 booth looked fast to me.
At least for Brawl standards so right now imo it is in the middle.

I would rely on Rosalina and Sonic trailers since they are latest two trailers to follow for now. I know it's subject to be changed.

I thought we already have music simples from those newcomer trailers, right? I just assume that they would reused those musics in trailer for the stages.
Besides Mega Man's they all feel like direct rips from their respective games. Swear I could hear a bit of the 3DLand theme playing in the developer video with Sakurai at E3 2013.

Yeah at this point I'd say the only character with a shot at getting cut is Snake and that would be more due to them having issues getting Konami to agree to let them use the character again for some bizarre reasons. Even then they could very easily port his moveset into an Advance War character.

If the loss of Snake is what it takes to get an Advance Wars playable character, I am sooooooooooooooooooooooo for it :D

I'm not sure if this means you'd prefer 5-6 or that you wouldn't be able to tell between a 6 and a 10 anyway, therefore whatever

...and I probably should've made the scale 1-9 cause G&W, and so 5 would be straight in the middle
as a matter of fact, anyone else who wants to answer, do it on a 1-9 scale pls

That lucario topic got me wondering how sakurai will handle mewtwo's eventual reveal and whether he will be treated a veteran or a newcomer with a video.

Newcomer with a video. It will show them fighting in some Pokemon stage and then Mewtwo appears out of no where or something.

Jesus. That should be a campaign angle for an Advance Wars rep.

^ I like this man's confidence.

Also if you're not a man, my bad.

Would Mewtwo get a newcomer trailer? Is Mewtwo a newcomer?

I'd guess it'll probably be like Sonic where they gave us a short video and hyped him up a bit, but I don't expect the guy to get a full fledged newcomer video.

The notion that Melee's soundtrack is in any way better Brawl's is preposterous. This would be possible if the two soundtracks were completely separate and Brawl's soundtrack didn't include the vast majority of Melee's soundtrack in addition to a ton of its own quality music, but considering it does... yeah, this is just the latest stupid example of the dumb "Melee everything is better than Brawl everything" idea some Smash players like to advertise.

Actually I could see them potentially cutting Lucas and possibly Wolf, yeah I know they are more Luigi style clones but if anyone was going to get cut it'd be them. I really don't seem anyone below possibly being cut

Ike (unless replaced by Chrom)
Ice Climbers
Wario
Yoshi (unless replaced by yarn yoshi)
Rob
Game & Watch
Ness
Diddy Kong
Shiek (unless replaced by Impa so Zelda/Impa gets a real down b's)
Falco
Jigglypuff
Meta Knight
Ganondorf
Captain Falcon
Zero Suit Samus
Pokemon Trainer*

Pokemon Trainer gets an asterisk because I could see him getting different pokemon which may or may not make him new for some people.

Ike is probably the second biggest ? But at worst Chrom will be 95% the same as him if he's replaced

Awesome use of drawing and screenshot

nice!

I did considered that or Mewtwo Strikes Back (my friend's suggestion) but I would rather to pick Yoshi as subtitle for OT5 tho. It's possible that Sakurai would release Yoshi during March.

Oh! I was just making that title for Mewtwo's eventual reveal. I agree with Yoshi for OT5 btw.

You guessed right.

Nah Chrom can't be an Ike clone...Slow and heavy hitter lucina would be odd if shes a chrom alt.

Luciana is more likely to be a Marth alt then a Chrom alt, hell just give Marth the mask as an alt costume and call it a day

Edit: ffdgh your screwing up your quote tags

It's not the numbers, it's the characters they have revealed already.

Even if you discount Luigi as a one-off for e Year of Luigi, we've seen Toon Link, Marth, Lucario - all characters that were been secret in all previous appearances. Toon Link was to promote Wind Waker, but you honestly couldve used Zelda or something just fine. Mar and Lucario really came out of nowhere, there wasnt a 'need' to reveal them before release unless they arent secret.

We've had Rosalina revealed as a newcomer when you would assume that if any newcomer was going to be secret, it would be her, being an unexpected character and the fifth Mario character to boot.

Sakurai also talked about the Internet giving away content from his games. Yes, he was specifically talking about videos, but characters are exactly the same. I'm sure he would rather have a greater level of control of when characters are revealed, by revealing them himself in the lead up to release.

The thing with unlockable characters is that you can either hide new characters away - in which case you limit the amount of characters you can show off prior to release just for the sake of it - or you can hide characters that people already know are in (kind of like Brawl did), and then, well what's the point? Just do away with it. Smash has plenty of content it can arbitrarily hold away from the player to supposedly compell them to play a game that should be good enough to compell them regardless, so why lock characters - the games main selling point - away? It's just not necessary.

In my view, unlockables are not about keeping characters a secret (maybe a little bit of that), but more like as having incentives to play the game. They are like milestones, prizes/incentives for you to keep playing the game.

Knowing unlockable characters before unlocking them is nothing new, we had that far back in Super Smash Bros 64, through game magazines. Today its just easier with the internet. Also, the comparison you made with unlockable videos is flawed. You can get the exact same experience watching unlockable videos on the internet or through the game, but characters, well, the only way to experience playing the characters is having them unlocked in your game.

Also, about the characters they revealed thus far, well you cannnot really conclude anything because of them. By your logic, Ness and Captain Falcon were secret in SSM64, so they should have been seecret in Melee. Although it usually was the way you described, with the unlockable characters keeping as unlockable in the sequels, I can easily see Sakurai changing that.

I truly believe there will be unlockable characters. There might not be many of them, (even though every SSM had more unlockable characters than the one preceding it) but I'm sure there will be unlockable characters in this.
