He doesn't mean one is the subsequent iteration, though

I posted that way back in January, but I still stand by it. I think it's possible.

They should have Robin and call it a day.
I'm really hoping for a playable Chrom with Robin following behind him, Pair Up style. Then Chrom can handle the normal attacks with his sword/lance, and Robin can use magic for his specials. It could be especially interesting as the characters could act out of synch with each other - think Ms. Fortune's head in Skullgirls, except with magic projectiles.
Lucina can be an alternate costume for Marth.
Marth and Lucina have different VA's. >:I
So does Hal and John.
You lost me my fellow Villager.
You lost me my fellow Villager.
I never saw the issue with the other way around
"Hey new girl and you do not have to learn a new moveset, and they have the old guy as a costume."
" i see, I have no issue with this sir. I would like more girls on the roster and if I wish to play as marth, marth is an alternate with the same moveset.Everyone ones, even Steve and I hate that guy."
Maybe its me by due to the nature of his franchise, marth can be a damn chicken, as long as he plays the same. Meh.
Green Lanterns. The Green Lantern character in Injustice is usually Hal Jordan, but they've introduced a John Stewart "alt costume" that changes the voice actor for the character as well as his appearance.
Doing that would be like having Dr. Mario as the character in the game, with normal Mario as his alternate. Which character is the "primary" means a lot in terms of representation and how it will be perceived by the fanbase. I mean, in SSBB look at how many people were annoyed that Wario's "main" costume was his WarioWare outfit instead of his overalls. A case where the alternate costume involves changing the entire character would raise even more issues.
Marth is the face of Fire Emblem - his sword is even the emblem. Even if it is more or less semantic, Marth should stay in and Lucina should be his alt, not the other way around.
Not at all.
Its if they had Kyle Rayner as the green lantern rep. Sure Hal is older and a bit more well known , but having a cool "new"( stretching this word) guy getting the spot lite is fine. And I think the idea of having a girl being on of the faces of fire emblem in brawl is a grand idea. Taking of the honorable role of marth. Why not, he can be an alternate, I get a cool chick and people get honored. Why is this bad, why is having a new girl being the rep for fire emblem bad?
So no it isn't like that at all, how did you even come up with that comparison?
Okay, let me try a different approach. Let's say, in a hypothetical alternate universe where Nintendo wasn't so stiff with the Zelda franchise, that a game came out where the main character was Malon. In the game, she played more or less like Link - she wielded a sword and shield, and collected various dungeon items typical for the Zelda series.
Now, which would make more sense for Smash Bros. - Malon being playable, with Link as an alt? Or Link playable with Malon as an alt? The answer should hopefully be obvious.
Lucina is great, and I definitely want to play as her in Smash Bros. But she shouldn't take away Marth's spot as the Fire Emblem posterboy - that is, and always will be, Marth and Marth alone.
you know the weird thing about hal jordan and john stewart is that john is actually the most popular green lantarn due to him being on justice league, ever since then DC has been making sure hal gets all the pushing
That seems terrible, and you're the only person who thinks it's a good idea. Marth is the face of Fire Emblem. He's been around for 23 years. You don't just up and replace him with a girl who isn't even the most important character in the single game she appears in.She's new and cool, having a main female rep for fire emblem taking over for marth seems kinda of cool.

Why not?
Blame Geoff Johns for pushing the most boring of all the human Green Lanterns.
Okay, since this seems to be Nintendo OT from time to time I might as well post here. I have seen a "fall conference" and a "fall update" being mentioned in several threads. Have these things been confirmed or something?
Because doing an entire character's worth of model and animation work for someone functionally identical is damned silly.
are you talking about hal, or john?
This is a fan service game, give them what they want. There are other fighting games do this too, this isn't new at all. A fan service game that is supposed to represent the legacy of nintendo seems like the kind of thing you put in the extra work for.
We gon' fight.
As a celebration of Nintendo's history it really doesn't make sense, Marth has been the constant in the FE franchise representation. Replacing him because Lucina "is a girl and cool" seems shortsighted. Having him as a costume would just be bizarre because they are different characters with totally different models.
john GOAT
You comparison still isn't valid because you are talking about a franchise where the hero besides not being the same guy is essentially the same guy, link. The one we are talking about can be anyone they are just lords, like Kyle , guy , hal, and John are green lanterns.
Now do not get me wrong I do not condone this type of alternate in all situations, actually would argue against it most of the time. Especially in the case of John in injustice because his powers function on will and imagination, and two people having the exact same move set in that situation in silly.( Yes I realize magical color coded sentai space cops is already silly but bear with me here) But in a case like this where the main character could be anyone and these two specifically share the exact same moveset, one trying to adopt the mantle of another, and in the newest game in the series. Why not?
She's new and cool, having a main female rep for fire emblem taking over for marth seems kinda of cool. To compare her to malon is silly, where you getting these comparisons from?
That movie ruined Hal's popularity too.
If Lucina isn't a playable character, what about as an assist trophy? Because I don't see her being Marth's alt.fwiw I also would like Lucina to be the "new Marth", even if I think it's pretty unlikely. An alternate costume with her in disguise would still make me happy tho.
The difference here is that Marth has been the Main Character for 4 / 13 games, being also the lord from the first game, and the owner of the sword has been used so far as the Fire Emblem series logo. Lucina isn't even the main lord character from her game (even if she does play an important role).
It seems like we should be arguing that Lucina should be a Marth clone because the costume idea would be a whole new damn character if they want to be accurate and have the right voice. It would be like the Megaman X costume for Zero in MvC, not really pleasing anyone because they didn't go the extra mile and make it a separate character.

A fan service game that is supposed to represent the legacy of nintendo seems like the kind of thing you put in the extra work for. Especially one for all things considered, is going to do very well.
I just realized, Kraid would make a great Metroid playable character, since he is smaller than Ridley.
Why wouldn't you want them to be new characters? At this point, i doubt that smash 4 will have clones. Besides, Chrom uses Rapiers, doesn't he?

In what way?Counterpoint: Lucas
Counterpoint: Lucas
How so? Neither Ness nor Lucas is more important than the other in terms of the Mother franchise, and both were playable characters in their own right.
Ack, no talking about Marth getting replaced! No one should think that! I'm confident Ike is getting the boot, though.
Lucas was available from the start in Brawl, and Ness was unlockable. They could make Lucina available right away (like Ike) and just make Marth a secret char as usual. I could see this happening: a lot of characters in Smash seem to be representative of their latest games. Even Other M or StarFox (ugh) Command.
On the other hand, Olimar's still there, butYoung Link updated to Toon, etc,he might be in Pikmin 3 as well? haven't played it.
