Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS Thread 2: Where Pilotwings is apparently Minecraft

No reason why Nintendo can't cooperate with the tournament scene to create a competitive matchmaking hopper like MLG in Halo 3/Reach, though.

Communities are nice and I support custom servers in general, but they're exclusionary by nature. I think it should really be a global feature available to all players.

Nintendo did have global communities for MK7, basically presets where everyone could go for various settings.

Would be nice if they had a global competitive matchmaking especially if they have real spectating this time. I don't really expect it but real time spectating on competitive matches would be really fun, especially if they keep the betting mechanic from Brawl and somehow make the coins worth something.

I think they have to go with matchmaking. There's too many popular ways to play the game. Create hoppers for 1v1, 2v2, and FFA in both casual (Time, items, all stages) and Pro (Stock, no items, competitive stages) variants. Rotating gimmick hoppers like giving everyone Bunny Hoods, etc... could also be a lot of fun.

Would really like to see them focus the spectator mode as you said. Smash is incredibly simple and accessible for spectators to get into. I think the game could fucking blow up if Nintendo works with the community to support it properly.

Yeah, I suppose matchmaking would make more sense for Smash since you might prefer 1v1 and 2v2, communities seem suited to pure FFA.

I do hope they have lobbies with chat at least if they can't do spectate, it would eliminate the need for a separate IRC open or something. With Namco helping out I hope for some modern online features, with that it would pretty much blow other online party/fighting games away.

This sounds awesome. No way it happens.

Chat would be great since its so easy to type with the gamepad.

The kicker is that its so damn obvious. Halo 2 did this shit back in 2004.

We all saw the numbers for the Melee EVO stream. We already know that Smash will capture casual Nintendo fans regardless, but I feel like it could really ignite the competitive scene if a good feature set pans out. It's like a bubble that's getting ready to burst; Nintendo just has to poke it a little bit.

and they probably won't

I would like it if in online team battle my partner isn't useless majority of the time please. >_>

Luckily recent advances in the last decade of online gaming have given way to what we call the "party system", which allows you to invite a friend to team up with against another team of players.

If it matches you with randoms it would be nice if the game had some kind of skill rating for if you want to find people around your level. At least in the competitive areas, it wouldn't mean that much when items are on.

I think MK tried this with VR points? I'm not sure.

Yeah, I mean, it's obvious to us. I don't see how they go from the effort they put into Brawl's online and then suddenly come out with matchmaking that competes with other top online games. They're certainly not going to consult with the competitive scene.

I realistically expect basic match-making with 1v1, 2v2, and FFA. All items on normal. And then they'll offer something like custom communities or the ability to host private lobbies with all the regular options. They'll "leave it up to the players" to coordinate if they actually care to delve deep enough.

That gives them the opportunity to say, "Hey, the options are there." Which seems to be Sakurai's stance in general towards treating this game as more than a party game. "If you want to dig deeper, you can, but I'm not going to acknowledge that aspect."

This thread is really depressing on weekends. Sakurai, release screenshots on weekends please... :(

Came here to post just this. D:

The crossover fighting game on the Nintendo 3DS is designed to fit the smaller screen of the portable system. Masahiro Sakurai admitted that the screenshots released so far does not do the game any “justice.” Players will have to see “Super Smash Bros. 4” running on the Nintendo 3DS in order to get a better feeling on the visual impact.

Sakurai made a comment.

I saw a woman on the bus a couple of days ago that looked exactly like a female version of Sakurai. I almost walked up to her to say "Nice disguise dude, but not good enough. Is Ridley going to be in the game?".

Sunglasses Krookodile should be in Smash 4.

D: How can you hate Meowth!!?

Anime: pretty annoying and pointless character. And while I admire Mauddie's work on him, his voice is still intolerable. Much better than the godawful Japanese dub though.

And here I am thinking the 3DS screens looked great already.

Nintendo cloning Sakurai?

Edit:
Sakurai also just tweeted a picture of his cat from below. What can it mean? Maybe we can now change the game's perspective while playing?
lol

I haven't even touched Xenoblade yet, but I got it day 1 just so I don't have to ever worry about buying it for more than 50.

I should really play it someday...

double shame on you, shame shame.

I'm actually a bit worried about that. Aside from the game itself existing, they really haven't done anything so far to attract general Nintendo fans.

Putting aside discussions about quality or how fun it really was, Brawl had things like the Final Smashes and SSE at least, which hyped people a lot back then. Right now, the entire hype about this new Smash seems to be just "It's a new Smash!". SSE was a late reveal, but Final Smashes were right in the beginning. I guess there's this nebulous character customization that Sakurai has talked about, but considering how it won't involve changing character appearance, or even powering up/leveling up, I don't know how much of a selling point it can be.

or they just havent revealed much about this yet, we all know it, most people who like smash are already on board with it.

Imagine it actually on the 3DS.

Ungh.

Sakurai tweeted this:

Which roughly translates to "September from tomorrow. So, in September."

NEW SMASH CONFIRM. /lol

I wonder if we'll get a demo for this

shame on you

heh, I'll get to it eventually

Didn't Sakurai also say this is aimed at the intermediate player, not the expert?

yep I remember that, something about him basically wanting every one being able to pick it up and enjoy it

Demo? Unlikely. I imagine if there was one, it'd be a basic battlefield match with time decreased to say three-minutes with maybe 1-3 characters to choose.

I just wish there was a better way to convey 3DS screenshots because games look 100x better on-screen than screenshots and this already looks good on a screenshot yet alone the actual screen.

Hopefully Nintendo'll take it to TGS (unlikely) so we can see some off-screen footage of both games.

So will they maybe release a 3DS only trailer on the eshop then?

Still doubt that. eShop video compression is pretty shitty and I don't think Sakurai'd be happy with people making comments even though it's a poorly compressed video.

Probably explains lack of frequent 3DS shots too.

There isn't going to be a Smash demo, lol. Nintendo usually only makes demos for games which don't already have a large fanbase. It's a type of marketing which Smash doesn't need at all.

This is a new iPhone case I got today. Buttons are actually recessed and the speaker grill is open, it's terrific. :P

Trying to revive Saturday SmashGAF.

Since I might be out of house for all day tomorrow so I would like to make an early prediction for next week.

Yep. Nothing could beat these.

I remember bugging my parents to death to go Burger King just to get most of these.

fuck yes. My mom use to work there when I was a kid so I use to bug her to no end. i remember afew of them very fondly like Nidoking and new. i also had a few of those gold plated cards when they were doing that promotion. heh, most of my toys came from there or McDonalds lol. Damn that brings me back.

All this talk makes me wonder if they'll ever do a smash promotion with mcdonalds or burger king (get a plastic figurine or something would be pretty awesome). I know Pokemon does it a lot.

Burger King had the best toys, especially the Pokemon collectible ones and the gold cards in the pokeballs you could buy.

I remember I got one, no clue where it went, probably gone forever, I think it was Poliwhirl or Poliwrath

I made some good money back in high school as a BK employee. The bags with the figures had serial code like numbers on them that let you know which character was in the bag. Between completionists and Pikachu fans, money was good.
