Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS Thread 3: Ridley's Believe It or Not!

Nope. All they know is tornado and dsmash is broken and therefore he should be banned. At least that's what they said when I asked them :lol

Good point. I bet Sakurai is playing a build with 50 characters as we speak.

Everyone in my home has heard metaknight is OP from the internet, but no one can use him. They still threaten to quit matches because tornado spam is absolutely annoying.

I can see casuals just getting annoyed at tornado spam to begin with.

Won't miss that move a single bit.

I actually could have sworn I remembered reading that Sakurai single-handedly handled character balance in Brawl, but I can't find it now so maybe I misheard something somewhere.
This right here. I thought Sakurai worked on balancing by himself.
I also recall reading this in an early news article about Smash 4.

IIRC, it even went into how Sakurai balanced the characters - he pitted them up against one another, tried to see if one character would consistently come out on over the others or consistently lose, according to that stats screen I almost never find myself using, and nerf/buff as appropriate.

Maybe the balance will be better this time with Namco helping out? Melee had a pretty decent balance of characters, if I recall correctly. It definitely doesn't help that there were like 30 in Brawl.

I always hear Pit yelling "KYLIE MINOGUE!!!!!"

Maybe I'm very ignorant when it comes to game design and please fill me in because I'm sure others would like to know as well, but...

For then to be discussing balancing and re-balancing already should we assume almost all of the characters are in and pretty finalized and now they are just making smaller tweaks and adjustments as they play test them all together? I would assume it wouldn't make sense to balance all the characters, then add more characters, then go back and rebalance and adjust, then add more, etc? Could this hint to SSB4 being farther along than many assume and a spring/summer release is a possibility?

Actually making the characters and animations is THE easiest part of making a fighting game, most of the time is spent on balancing.

Often, to test a character that hasnt been made yet, theyll use a dummy to test out mechanics and stuff, like lets say they wanted to test out Wario's moves before he was in the game, they would probably put Warios moveset on Marios character model to test out and balance until the art assets are actually done.

A Meteor Smash is a special type of attack (usually an aerial) that send an opponent almost straight downward. Examples include Ganondorf's down-aerial and Mario's forward-aerial.

Make sure not to confuse Meteor Smashes with Spikes. Meteor Smashes are attacks that are within an angle hard-coded into the game and thus their knockback can be cancelled (a Meteor Cancel) by simply jumping or performing an Up-B. A Spike is much more dangerous, as it send an opponent at a low angle that isn't quite low enough to trigger the game seeing it as a Meteor Smash, and thus they cannot be Meteor Cancelled. An example of a Spike would be Fox's Reflector in Melee (hence Shinespike).

In Brawl, Spikes are practically nonexistent due to the angle that defines Meteor Smashes being extended greatly.
But no one plays Brawl anymore anyway.

Thanks. And yes, I meant 3, not 4. I guess I never noticed those moves before. I'm too terrible to try attacking somebody when I'm not above the ground.

I actually liked this if only because I love reflector moves in the Smash series. Definitely glad I won't have to hear the sound clip ad infinitum though.

Pic of the day. Link's downward strike was designed to change to a Meteor Smash when the tip of the sword is aligned just right at the start. However, it will be removed if it's deemed too powerful overall after some multiplayer play tests.

I hope they keep that meteor smash for Link, he needs all the help he can get. Give him a better recovery while you're at it too!

I wonder if they've changed it to act like Toon Link's d-air (as in, you're as good as dead if you miss it and you're off stage), or if Link will continue with his own floaty version of it.

All it really tells me is that you shouldnt have this mindset when we have absolutely idea how link plays in smash 4, you guys are just assuming that its just brawl link but in smash 4, I hohgly doubt thats how it works, saying sakurai doesnt understand whats happening with this link that he is currently working on is naive.

I don't know... he hasn't understood the Link he's worked with in previous games either, judging by his tier placement in the competitive scene and general viability beyond said scene.

Brawl MURDERED most of the top characters from Melee:

Fox -> from godly to average
Sheik -> from godly to bad
Jiggs -> from godly to FECAL MATTER
Peach -> from good to bad
Falcon -> from good to TERRIBAD
Samus -> from okay to HORRIBLE
Ganon -> from okay to HORRIBLE
Link -> from bad to WHY.JPG

The sad part is they weren't even nerfed due to engine changes (hitstun, l cancelling), a lot of their moves are straight up worse, whether that means slower, deals less damage, less knockback, worse hitboxes... pretty much the only Melee characters that were meaningfully buffed were Pikachu, Kirby and Game and Watch.

In general, the 64/Melee cast suffered a lot in the Brawl transition. It felt like the Brawl new characters came from a completely different design mentality in basic moves and special moves, traversal, and animation.

And the legacy characters weren't updated sufficiently to compensate.

Remember how Brawl came on a Dual Layer disc which led many's Wii unusable?

What if they need a Quad Layered disk on Wii U?!?! And a Super Cart for 3DS?

Gonna be a lot of unhappy Smashers. :p

Note, I am joking.

Sakurai gonna beat the REevaltions record on the 3DS eshop.

It's been over five weeks since Sonic was revealed, which is just about the longest we've gone between character announcements -- I don't remember exactly how much time separated Peach and Luigi. Hopefully we see a new character by the end of next week.

only about 4 weeks tho

I'm positive we'll get a new character this week. Along with another for ALBW.

Taking a safe guess Zelda will be the next one for ALBW.

It'll be Skullkid, that Majora's Mask that was in one of the places. It has to be!

It's going to be his smaller and less cool brother Rodney.

Just kidding.

It's going to be Yoshi

Wrong. It's
Boshi.

Ugh, it's people like you that have to always make my heart skip a beat before I come back to reality and realize Skullkid/Majora's Mask will never get in and it kills me. Please stop reminding me that not all dreams come true

This is the true spirit of Smash Bros.

Also if Ridley, Waluigi or Boshi got in I'd get that shit day zero.

Sakurai's balancing of Brawl was absolutely pathetic. I also do remember an article stating that he did most of the balancing in it too, somewhere...

Not only did the physics changes hurt many of the veteran characters, but he also goes to prove that he intentionally nerfed many of them as well. He admits on Jigglypuff's character page that she is a joke character and nerfed Rest, which shouldn't have been nerfed because it is the most situational attack in Melee. Also Samus, where most of her attacks in Melee were somewhat powerful, to be nerfed ultimately in Brawl which is especially noticeable in her Power Shot and Super Missle, showing that she was intentionally nerfed.

However, as someone mentioned before, a more fatal flaw in his design were the characters he actually BUFFED. Zelda is awful despite having many of her attacks stronger and more disjointed and made Din's Fire a versatile projectile. But all of her aerial attacks, save for Nair, must be sweetspotted to be useful and she has absolutely no approach options, making her practically useless in many situations. Although she was made to be a more defensive character, she needs to actually be able to HIT people SAFELY, and she can't do that with any move.

On the other hand, characters like the Ice Climbers were buffed in many good ways, in attack, speed and Nana's AI.

Of course, there's also characters like Mr. Game & Watch who was thought to be top tier in the beginning as he was obviously buffed up a lot with a better recovery, lagless smash attacks and more powerful in general and the physics were better for him.

To put this into perspective, the current tier list has 6 veterans in the upper half and 15 in the lower half, the F tier (the bottom-most) having ALL veterans: a total of 8.

Needless to say, many characters need to be reconsidered for their balance, especially characters like Jigglypuff, Samus and Captain Falcon who were clearly nerfed on purpose. Sakurai should just take risks and give characters new options and moves, hell, even a new moveset while you're at it. Ganondorf could do with one.

Huh, for once they are getting a raw deal on release dates.

They gotta save December for
Ice Climbers
though.

I sure as hell hope so.

Where did you see Luigi? I can't find it.

For people who don't want to click,

That is amazing.

Could we stop assuming one person makes all the design decisions, here are the designers for Brawl:

Planning & Level Design: Kazuhiro Irie, Kenichi Niwano, Masaya Kuninaga, Yoshiyasu Okawara, Takeshi Suzuki, Shintaro Kataoka, Miki Yakabe, Masayuki Tada, Takeshi Suganuma, Kunhiko Nakata, Norihiko Yonesaka, Kou Arai & Daisuke Shimizu

14 people, plus Sakurai, balanced the game.

Sakurai has claimed most of the credit for the character balancing in Brawl though, when he commented about how this time he would delegate balancing to other team members.

The issue with Jigglypuff is that it was originally intended to be the weakest character in the original Smash (even though it wasn't). That wasn't the case in Melee, with Pichu taking that spot. In Brawl, I don't think Sakurai has stated that he intended to do that again explicitly, but I think it's pretty likely that he intentionally attempted to give that role back to it (even though yet again it wasn't the weakest).
