Superman: Warner Bros pitching to directors for live action Red Son movie

I thought joss whedon was suppose to salvage the DCU ?

What gave you that idea? He's finishing Justice League right now as a favor to WB and Snyder, for obvious reasons, and I doubt his Batgirl movie will set the direction for the entire DCEU.
I don't think he wants that kind of pressure anymore.

Just a question, is this paved out as a 'Superman is now a communist and evil' sort of deal or is it played more interestingly?

He's not "Evil", at least from his point of view. Red Son Superman is a huge supporter of the communist regime and Russia.

He's nowhere near as evil as Injustice Superman.

John Schnepp from collider seems to think Josh Whedon is actually there to make Justice League 2 after fixing 1.

Geoff Johns is the closest thing to a Kevin Feige the DCEU has right now, the first film he had significant input on was Wonder Woman. Whedon is just finishing up JL and then directing a Batgirl movie, but he's not playing "showrunner" for the whole DCEU.

I like Schnepp, he seems like a fun guy, but his enthusiasm gets the better of him all the time, he keeps making up bullshit fanboy scenarios in his head, lol. I mean, Whedon on Justice League 2 is certainly a possibility if Batgirl does well but nothing points to that happening as of right now.

DC does realize that the one film people actually liked from them was the one that wasn't a deconstruction, right? That feels like something they should keep in mind.

He's not evil. He's still Superman - wanting to help the most people he can, however he can - just raised as an authoritarian. No real heroes or villains.

It's a pretty basic "power corrupts" story. More interesting in theory than in practice. But the skeleton is good if you like Superman in concept.

Red Son is also the most well liked Superman comic that continues to sell like The Killing Joke.

Well, Superman shouldn't be patriotic imo.

I agree with that. He's an American, and thus should probably live his life through an American PoV, but he shouldn't be depicted as fighting on the behalf of America, or working as a Government lapdog. He should be an international hero that fights on behalf of the entire world, not just one nation.

Raised in the Soviet Union is the most punk rock thing the DCEU could do ?
What about Saudi Arabia ? Just for the costume it would be fun

Doing it purely as an "Elseworlds," instead of just a new solo Superman film in the DCEU would be a little frustrating for me, as someone who wants to see just a really well-made classic Superman story on the screen.

I have the opposite opinion to you. I'd like to see Elsewods because I'm not a comic book reader and haven't seen these stories before. I've seen the Donner and Superman Returns films and want something new...

That's my point though. There's so much rich material to pull from in more "traditional" Superman stories that hasn't been utilized for the films. They could do something really great with a Brainiac story, they could do something inspired by All-Star Superman, they could do Bizzaro, or President Luthor (something that could also be quite timely).

Lots of wonderful ways to offer something new, without going in this direction yet. Which, I don't feel like is a bad direction, but isn't the right direction for the character right now. As another poster said, you gotta construct before you can deconstruct. It'd be like doing "Logan" in 2005. Wouldn't nearly have had as much impact if done so early on.

Batman's nightmare in BvS could easily be retcon to be red son. Shits already right there. Retcon and be done with it.

I love Pokken!
No way this is real. No way.

Kinda want it, Red Son is one of the rare Superman stories i really like.

One, how about we get superman right before doing weird superman.

Trust me I would love a crime synidcate of america movie as much as everyone else who wants to see ultraman snort krypto-cocaine. But that works once you have an established character who has done well in the medium for quite a while.

Also, might be the... best time for that... maybe.

Never really got this line of thinking. You can pretty much deconstruct or whatever as long as the movie is well-made. What made Logan have such an impact was because it was a damn fine movie.

It's also got the usual Mark Millar pants on head stupid ending.

Logan is a great movie, but a big part of why it works as well as it does is because of the decades-long relationship viewers have with Hugh and Patrick as Logan and Charles. People grew to love their interpretation of the characters, so it made everything that happens in that movie exponentially more heart-breaking.

Now, a Red Son movie probably isn't going for the gut-punches that Logan was.. Yet, I think for a movie like this to have an impact, people have to actually care about Cavil's take on Supes, which I'm not wholly convinced most folks do at this point.

Except there is no modern day Soviet Union. It wouldn't make sense.
Flash literally appeared after that scene to warn bruce about something. Could be darkseid, could be him fucking up the timeline. They could absolutely retcon the flash screwing up the timeline thus expanding the DCEU.

Or you know, introducing the multiverse in the flash movie. Would be cool if they explain the many batmans and superman through the years. Lol

I wish they would bring up the multiverse in the movies so they can have these 1 off movies, and can even have a different actor playing Superman and Batman and then it leads all to....Flashpoint. Do it WB.

I'm not entirely convinced. A well made movie is supposed to elicit that kind of response. A well-made deconstructed Superman movie could have the same impact in theory.

heh, the ending is what I like most about the story.

(It was actually Grant Morrison's idea)

Yeah, this was around the time Millar, Morrison, Waid and some others had written up a big document for the Superman reboot they wanted to do together. DC said no and instead they all did Elseworlds books like All-Star Superman, Red Son etc with elements from their pitch.

Ok so let me guess.

"we have wonder woman as our champion of Earth and symbol of hope... So we might as well do something else with Superman" is exactly how this went ?

Fuck you WB.

They're the fucking worst.
