Superman: Warner Bros pitching to directors for live action Red Son movie

They should let Zack Snyder bring his hot and fresh sensibility to it, much like he revolutionized Superman by stripping away all of his heroism and charisma.

Ok so let me guess.

"we have wonder woman as our champion of Earth and symbol of hope... So we might as well do something else with Superman" is exactly how this went ?

Fuck you WB.

They're the fucking worst.

I highly doubt this is actually happening as a live action flick.

I get this horrible feeling that if this ends up being part of the DCEU - somehow - it'll be part of the whole "Oh, it's part of the plan to give Superman this arc...." but they nailed it for Wonder Woman inside the first 2/3 of the film.

Well, it won't be of course...it'd be kinda fun to see a Red Son adaptation but I can't imagine it's the wisest choice when the DCEU is kicking into gear...although the potential for a cinematic CoIE - that gives them an excuse to crossover with Avengers because fuck it why not - would be pretty hype.

Edit: Although now I think about it, wouldn't be surprised if its Mark Millar stirring something up because he wants money :p Didn't Grant Morrison once joke that Millar said you haven't got a good comic book idea unless you've sold the Movie/TV rights to it?

This makes total sense considering Matthew Vaughn was supposedly in talks to direct a Superman movie. He's probably the first director they went to, if true.

Studios really shouldn't count their chickens before they're hatched.

There's so many spin-off talks before even having a steady and successful mainline.

Kind of seems like every single week we hear about some new story/rumour from people with sources in WB about something that their doing.

I think this is all BS and WB wouldn't do this before making a MoS 2.

lmao never saw this before. That smile tho... He actually thought Supes breaking necks was a cool, fun idea.

Yeah this sounds fake. Superman: Red Son is an interesting story, but I think WB is too caught in their attempted share universe to actually do an elsewhere film. If Red Sun ever happened, it won't be for years at least.

The main problem is that your movie universe is already dark, so you dont get a much contrast using the Red Son history.

Red Son is a good what if.

I don't... I mean, I'd love if WB was like "Fuck it, we're just going to elseworlds the hell out of these movies because continuity really doesn't matter. Lets just make cool movies with cool ideas"

I'd LOVE if that's what was going on, but we already know they're invested in the Cinematic Universe notion, so... how the hell do you ma—

I mean where do you f—

... I dunno man. I dunno.

I also don't like the idea that the first real risky go-for-it elseworlds version of Superman to get adapted to the big screen will be fuckin' Mark Millar's.

Especially when you have SECRET IDENTITY RIGHT FUCKIN' THERE.

I think I'd prefer a cinematic universe of elseworlds tied together by the Flash's speedforce powers but right now.

Red Son is a great story but it primarily works because of how a communist version of Superman contrasts to the big blue Boy Scout we know and love. I don't think it'd work the same way with the current Superman and not much would really differentiate the two.

Current Batman would make a killer Soviet Batman though.

It's a neat idea but how could this fit in the current DCEU? Especially when the Soviet Union stopped being a thing 27 years ago and we already have a Superman today! This could work of they made it its own thing but I dont think they will in fear of fucking up their DCEU confusing people (even more).

Fuck it, if this is true let's go bananas. Do a Batman/Dracula trilogy next. I'd kill somebody in front of their mama to see that.

Oh yeah, and that's the other thing: Considering what a fuckin' botch job Vogt-Roberts did on Skull Island I can't imagine he wouldn't be WORSE on that story than Snyder was on Man of Steel.

Like, Skull Island was a Zack Snyder movie that got dropped on its head. So its director is going to try tackling RED SON next? C'mon...

Snyder wishes he could make a movie as fun as Skull Island

Skull Island isn't fun though.

It's just dumb.

Like, even for "Island full of dumb monsters powerbombing each other into the dirt" dumb, it's fuckin dumb.

It's a very un-entertaining movie.

I'm sorry your taste center took such a hit in the accident. We're all here for you friend Bobby *hugs*

Kong making an improvised weapon out of a propeller was great

Dear lord. As cool as this might be, WB clearly have no belief or interest in making a movie about Superman.

I don't read a lot of comics/graphic novels but Red Son is one of my favorites. This could be awesome...but probably not with Vogt-Roberts directing.

DC does realize that the one film people actually liked from them was the one that wasn't a deconstruction, right? That feels like something they should keep in mind.

tbh calling man of steel or BvS or Suicide Squad 'deconstructions' is being incredibly generous to them also

They're not going to make this.

And if they did, I'd hope that this director stays far away from the project. Skull Island was one of the worst movies I've seen in a long while.

Glad this isn't a real thing, especially as part of the DCEU. Can you imagine the DCEU Lex Luthor in the Red Son Luthor role? Theaters across the country would have to replace thousands of seats that viewers cringed backwards through faster than speeding bullets.

It's not uncommon for people to mistake terrible writing and inconsistent character work as "deconstructions" these days. Pretty much anything that doesn't meet expectations will be termed that by somebody, whether it makes any sense to do so or not.

Get off my lawn, bub.

If you're going to reboot the DC movies, you might as well start with a character study of what Superman is.

That said, at this point I believe a fusion of Red Son and Earth 2's Val Zod might be more appropriate, and then wince him back into the main line at the end if they're trying to maintain Snyder's line. So basically: Black Commie Superman that you can feature in a MoS2 (Men of Steel?) or JL2, so you can later have that Ali vs Supes reference, big purple guy seated in the back. You know, something that might be interesting and that we haven't seen before. And also a heck of a lot more relevant to our day and age than another male white savior.

If Black Panther is a success like Wonder Woman is now, you can bet your ass DC is going to change lanes on what to do with what they got.

But doing Red Son in live-action would require taking the script and character seriously.

I dont believe it beyond Mark self-aggrandizing. Red Son being brought up as a unique non-traditional Superman story that directors might be interested in when they are offered forrrr MAN OF STEEL 2 versus literally offering them to make Red Son
