Varner with one of the lowest moments in survivor history. Holy crap, dude. It's gotten personal before, but not quite like that IIRC.

I hope CBS asked Zeke before this aired to make sure that was OK to air.
Zeke was doing media interviews prior to this airing, so he likely saw the draft cut before it finalized.

Jesus,I turned it on right before that moment and damn. That had to be one of the scummiest moments in survivor history. Really disappointed in Jeff.

So Varner looks like the bad guy for sure, and I'm glad they are letting Zeke talk for himself and pushing a positive message. Varner fuuuuucked up badly.

Between tonight and Zeke's bonding session with Bret last season, he's definitely coming back for a 3rd stint on Survivor down the road. Provided he's up for it.

The worse shit is that it wasn't even out of some desperation. He already had that shit queued up and ready to go. He was gearing up for it and thought it was going to be some huge betrayal. Just....god damn dude.

I hate conspiracy theories, but metamorphosis, then THAT tribal council? I hate to be suspicious, but what a coincidence. What a fucking idiot.

Shame on Jeff for that. He shoulda known that was a fucked route to take to try and get through the game. I believe him that he was trying to prove a deception, but that was far too personal. I hope that he learns from this.

As for Zeke, he is super inspiring. Almost in tears after him talking about it. He's a great player and person.

I've seen some scummy shit on Survivor but what Jeff did was the worst. I hope his actions haunts him for the rest of his life. I'm glad Zeke took it well and remained positive.

Jeff's 50 years old. He turns 51 on Easter. He's been on Survivor 3 times.

There's no excuse for that lack of self-awareness and judgement he exhibited tonight within the confines of a game.

I understand that he was desperate and saw his last opportunity to finally make a jury after 3 tries slipping through the cracks. But you don't bring personal and private decisions that someone has made outside of the game and use it to prop up a case to get people to vote your way. How did he think that was going to go? Simply put he didn't. He was acting solely on impulse.

You have to be able to detach the game from everything else. And Varner will be living with this mistake for the rest of his life.

I mean, there's destroying your legacy, and then there's destroying your legacy.
At least people won't be talking about peanut butter any more. So he has that.

Yeah, production had to have known he would do that and tried to get a leg up on it. Too coincidental. That is not a typical word survivor uses or even fit that much for the theme this season.its a stretch. But yeah, it fit that situation perfectly.

Wow and I was rooting for Varner up until that point.

I'm kind of speechless. One of the most shocking moments in Survivor history that's for sure.

In his confessional when he was talking about deception on multiple levels etc it crossed my mind that he would bring up Zeke being transgendered but I quelled that thought because I figured there was no way he would actually do that. Can't believe he chose to go out that way.

"SPEAKING OF DECEPTION, DID YOU GUYS KNOW ZEKE IS TRANSGENDER?"

...

"I thought everyone knew."

Not a fan of Zeke at all and have been actively rooting against him (I haven't forgotten him bullying Dave last season for being emotional and a loner) but nobody deserves that. That was some fucked up crap.

Apparently Varner was feeling incredibly depressed and even suicidal after this

Im sure he's getting lots of shit on twitter.

Edit: hmm he still insists he thought everyone already knew. Unless the editing messed it up, he seems to have wanted to imply transgender folk are deceptive. That's hard to admit doing because its malicious and he doesnt want to be known as malicious.

Im sure he'll continue catching shit for that

Zeke is such a classy and strong individual. He handled that ugly situation with way more grace than most people possibly could.

Really, really disappointed in Varner. People out in the boonies who has never met anyone transgender would do something shitty like this out of ignorance. It's still incredibly incredibly shitty, but done out of ignorance. But Varner should know better. Shame on him.

And for what? So he can possibly, in all likelihood, sit on a Survivor jury within the next week.

Yeah that really pisses me off about his apology. He outed him to prove he's lying and being deceptive...and then says he thought everyone knew. But if everyone knew, what exactly about being transgendered makes Zeke deceptive???

(Unless the edit was just weird like you said)

This is how I felt--not a fan of Zeke from his bullying of Dave from last season, and actually rather liked Varner, but man.

Varner did a bad bad thing and he should feel ashamed, and Zeke handled that with a lot of grace and goodwill and I'm proud of him.

:/

That statement is bullshit. He knew that nobody knew because his exact words to Zeke were "why haven't you told them that you're transgender?"

It's surreal when you put this into the context of Jeff Varner essentially being the first openly gay reality TV contestant ever.
He was probably a role model for Zeke being a long-time Survivor fan... only to have his confidence violated in such an egregious fashion.

Um... the winner of the very first Survivor, Richard Hatch, was openly gay.

Yo, FUCK Jeff Varner. That was one of the worst things I've ever seen on TV.

Cheering for Zeke to win now.

My mom keeps bringing it up, she's really angry about it.

Though she also asked me "if Zeke is transitioning, why does he have a full beard?" haha. No mom, Zeke has already transitioned to a man, not the other way.

Maaan. That post above about metamorphosis is now making me think someone leaked it to Jeff and that is why he brought it up. I wouldn't put it past the show to mention it in a question when it was obvious who was going.

In fairness to your mom, I thought the same thing and my wife had to explain it to me. Felt like a moron.

Very touching episode, even with the nastyness. Glad to see the tribe rally around Zeke, hope he continues to do well.

I also hope there is some amount of forgiveness available for Varner. People do shitty things every day, and some are worse than others.

This was terrible, but I still think it was a learning moment, and that Varner has some path to redemption from this act.

Holy shit that was the most epic survivor ending, in the worst way. Probst brought it around though, I thought he directed the conversation well.

A lot of former survivors on Twitter are bringing up a good point.

Varner chose to reveal this to about 6 other people. CBS are the ones who chose to reveal this to millions.

They could have easily have done some editing and then went right to the vote.

Between this and the whole metamorphosis thing, I'm getting a carny shenanigan vibe about the whole episode.

Looking forward to the post-merge, we have to be excited that Cirie's still around. She's bound to go pretty far into the game.

Tai and Troyzan having idols is interesting, because neither of them are particularly adept strategists. Sierra's legacy idol or Debbie's extra vote could be a bigger factor, ultimately.

I don't have a strong sense of who's aligned with whom, which is always fun going into a merge. They made a point of stressing the Aubrey/Sierra/Brad thing though...

I'm still wondering what Varner thought the reactions would be like. I'm sure he had it all planned out in his head.

*GASP*

"Zeke, how dare you! Thank God Varner was able to warn us about you!"

Seriously, what the fuck.

But the show could have easily edited out the outing from the general public. They must have asked Zeke if it was ok to come out after it happened at the tribal right?

Varner's always been one of the least trustworthy snakes in the game... would do anything to get ahead.

Snakes often think others act would act like snakes... they project their issues onto others.

... imagine if he had an idol and whipped it out after that though...

Yes, Zeke and GLAAD had input on the show's production for this episode.

Absolutely pissed. I was confused wtf Varner was talking about before tribal that he knew info on Zeke. I figured I must have missed something earlier in the episode. I hadn't seen any articles or anything about Zeke till after the episode was over.

Oh boy. My poor friend having to watch this with me; as soon as Varner blurted that out at tribal I was OFF cursing him out throughout basically the whole thing and screaming at him to volunteer his torch and just leave. Beyond horrible for anyone to out someone like that, but even worse because he should know better.

At least he realized right away he basically fucked up in the worst way possible. But he still tried to weasel out of it with the backtracking. Even his twitter apology included that BS line about how he thought everyone knew. Like fuck off for real Varner.

I want to go back and rewatch the tribal because Zeke's tribe mates seemed to be reacting in the same way I was and were super supportive. But I was so very pissed I couldn't even comprehend what they were saying. I have never just yelled at an episode on tv like that before. On the opposite side I don't ever want to rewatch that tribal because obviously I'm still worked up over it hours later.

I literally said WTF when it was revealed, just so random.
my first thought honestly was it going to be some immediate merge twist.

Wait, was Zeke being transgendered revealed earlier? I've only been halfwatching, but how did Jeff find out?

Props to Zeke for letting the episode air like that. He deserves his privacy but this episode will inspire a lot of people, both trans and their allies. So wonderful to see the tribe rally around him like that.

Was it Varner's actual gambit that CBS would just edit that entire part and he wasn't outing Zeke to the world? Or was he really that desperate to squeeze through tribal council that he didn't give a fuck?
