SW:Republic Commando seems promising (Demo)

Brandon F

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
Graphics are great, framerate burns at a fluid clip, controls are responsive and comfortably fit the Halo-mold. HUD and squad commands are stupidly simple to figure out, and things blow up real nice-like, particularly tossing a detonator into a group of droids. Bigger tank-like enemies take more of a beating, but blow up with a dazzling array of fireworks and light bloom effects. Did I mention the framerate never stuttered?

It's a very short demo though that features no real variety in action set pieces. Just a straightforward 15-or-so minute crawl through a Covenent-esque corridor with the occasional barricade or locked door to order your troops to interact with via context sensitivity.

Looking to be a pretty competent shooter though, much more interesting than I would have thought.

i liked how going into the sniper scope gives you what looks like an xray of the enemy, that tank at the end was a bit of a bitch though, i thought i was missing some easy way to take it down but it seems the game just wanted me to pelt it with all my ammo for 10 minutes...which is a bit weak challenge wise.

I agree though, seems like it'll be at least a solid game

Agreed

I also really dug the squad ordering system, though I can easily see it as being a bit limiting (you can only have your guys snipe from places that the devs thought would be a good place to snipe from)

I really hope that the enemy AI is smarter then this demo leads me to believe. I mean, you are fighting battle droids, who should be dumb by design. Hopefully the other enemies in the game will be a bit brighter

Yea, I conveniently happened to set up my troops behind various barriers around that door before I even knew the tank was en route, but when it did appear everyone was positioned at a unique angle and the sucker had no hope. I just kept tossing nades from right next to the door it emerged from, peppering fire in between while it feverishly tried to get a lock on my swaud mates. Felt real good.

Speaking of grenades, using them is just as intuitive as in Halo. Particularly neat is tossing one of the EMP types into a room full of droids and watching the entire group erupt with blue sparks.

Regarding squad orders, if you hold down A, a second menu appears allowing you to position specific grunts within your reticle in a location of your choosing(among other things). It's never really necessary to tool around with that level of layered planning, but the option is there beyond the context hot spots. But yea, the demo doesn't really show off any advanced AI coding. But blowing up droids felt nice and looked great too.

I hadn't realized you could order them beyond the premade hotspots, that's very good to know.

Now, if you will excuse me, it's time for me to wave the "Please Don't Suck" Voodoo Doll at this game some more.

Probably gonna suffer from the other big games hype.

I'm about 3 hours in and i'm enjoying it more than 1st one surprisingly.
