Switch 2 debuts as fastest selling hardware in US history

This is just the beginning

Honest question: could Switch 1 or PS5 have done this if they had enough supply to meet demand?

Not saying it's not impressive, but I'm curious whether this is a case of "unprecedented demand" vs "finally a hardware launch without severe under-supply + scalping"

Impressive, but early sales for big consoles like this isn't supply vs demand. It is only supply.

Credit to Nintendo for the large supply though. Much better than the people who spent over a full year trying to track down an unsold PS5.
Just wait till the holiday. Holiday lineup hasn't been announced yet. We are just starting to see 3rd parties in phase 2 launch in october with BL4. Phase 3 incoming for holiday 2025. Dont' forget pokemon bundle.

Deserved, so far we have two bangers, not counting third parties and Switch 1 upgrades and it's not even a month from launch yet, and it looks like Nintendo is releasing one per month like they were doing on Switch 1

<Insert PS5 would have sold ten billion units in one hour were it not for covid shortages excuse here>
COVID was a magical event, I made everyone sell less while making everyone sell more at the same time, depending on which argument you want to provide on the interwebs

Switch 1 absolutely.
PS5 pretty likely I think.

I love all the "Well I think any console could sell this number if they had stock"

It might be true but it takes a SHIT load of money and brains to organise this kind of roll out, the pressure to sign off on this much stock to manufacture would be enough to put most people in an early grave. A move like this takes balls of steel and confidence in your product on a whole other level.

Brain gymnastics in full force 🤣

I'm surprised we didn't get Prime 2 and 3 remaster before 4, would be a good buildup to release them in september and bam, Prime 4 november.
From the same company that gave us Mario Galaxy 1 but not Mario Galaxy 2 on the Switch?

I'm not surprised at all.

As has been mentioned before. Having tons of supply during launch is what worked here.

If they had 3 million available at launch, all 3 million would've sold as well.

I found it funny how GAF thought this worst thing ever created and they were pretty sure themselves it would fail.

I guess GAF was wrong once again.

Switch 1 release was pre-COVID so launch numbers are at least comparable.

To have Switch 2 surpass the PS4 from 2013 is imo already enough of a benchmark without dragging "what if" covid era consoles into the mix. Because the production issues caused by covid as a reason why it couldn't reach sales also brings another question, would there have been even that much demand if covid had not been there, in a time where peoples went all in on in-house entertainment? We'll never know.

PS5, mebbe. Switch probably not.

It's easier to supply decent amount of tiny devices akin to mobile phones, then big home consoles.

And now for BREAKING NEWS: water is wet!

Not trying to diminish the achievement, just curious. Switch and PS5 were both very hard to find for months whereas Switch 2 is readily available online and in stores. I always wondered how those systems would've sold if they had enough supply to meet demand. Heck even original Wii was barely ever in stock for like 2 years.
