Switch 1 games that may still see improvements on Switch 2 hardware without an update

Wanted to ask, how do all the Xenoblade Chronicles games run on Switch 2? Especially wondering on how Xenoblade Chronicles 2 runs?

not much the Switch 2 can do here without it being patched sadly

Xenoblade 2... still looks like shit due to the low resolution. but locks to 30fps now it seems.

basically, the Switch 2 maxes out the game fully (552p 30fps in handheld, 720p 30fps in docked)... that maxed out state still means an extremely low resolution in Handheld mode. It would need Monolith to patch it to actually make it decent. the upper limits are locked pretty low, and the TAA doesn't help the game either.

I really wish Nintendo would at least implement an option to force Switch 1 games into Docked mode when playing undocked, that would massively improve the game, at least when playing in handheld mode.

I mentioned it in the OT thread but Final Fantasy 3 for the Pixel Remaster doesn't have menus that lag. Its minor compared to a game with an uncapped frame rate but I am really happy now that the issue was resolved with the Switch 2. I haven't tested anything beyond FF3 as I'm playing the games in order. Maybe someone else could test the later games?

PSA: Nier Automata works! And looks and runs great, though is capped @ 30fps still.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 no longer drops below 480p in handheld, even in Tag Missions! Appears to be a rock solid 720p 60fps at all times. Hopefully Ninja Gaiden Black 2 finds its way to Switch 2 as well.

oh god... I don't know if you want that. look at the 120fps mode on current gen consoles, and then think about how the game would look on Switch 2...

ESPECIALLY IN HANDHELD MODE

Unreal Engine 5 with Lumen doesn't scale well to low resolutions. the game looks like absolute trash on PS5 and Series X already when pushed too low. the Series S version looks like pixel diarrhea.

Nice. So 720p on handheld mode? What about Ninja Gaiden 3 Razors edge?

Sounds like maybe an optimization problem. Maybe they can "fix" it for Switch 2 using DLSS? Honestly, as long as Ninja Gaiden 4 makes it, I'm happy.

Haven't checked yet. NG2 was notorious for turning into pixelated soup in handheld mode so I checked that one first 😅 Can definitely check out the others later.

Things to note:
- The Switch 2 does not use full hardware compatibility. I think due to some differences with the ARM CPU, some form of partial compatibility layer is in use. This emulation does take use of the extra cores and hardware in the Switch 2.

- The Switch 2's display is 1080, while un-docked Switch 1 games are designed for 720p. I guess the 720p Switch output gets upscaled to a 1080p display.

Sorry, i probably wouldn't be a very good judge on any differences in Xenoblade 2 or 3, because I never got around to playing them. I still wanted to finish the first game someday.

I did boot up Borderlands 3, and I definitely noticed a smoother 60fps from the look of it. Not the most exciting game, but it's one of the few I know of that had an unlocked framerate.

I played it on PC, and DLSS can't fix it, believe me.
it's extremely heavy on the GPU, and looks increasingly awful the lower the resolution is. I can barely hit 1440p 60fps with DLSS quality mode. and my GPU is essentially on par or slightly better than the PS5's GPU.

it's an insanely badly made game. doesn't run well, doesn't look good in motion unless you run at native 4k or something, or at least above 1440p internally.
you basically have to bruteforce it to be decent.

and I don't see them fixing it either, unless they go back to the drawing board and take out Lumen entirely, which would mean they'd have to redo the entire lighting of the game...
as I often say, Lumen is cancer, I stand by that statement... it is almost always used as a shortcut that looks awful.

NG4 seems to not use UE5, or at the very least seems to not use Lumen GI, thankfully... so I hope it won't follow down the same path
