Join Ken Levine, the game director of the original System Shock 2, for a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the 1999 sci-fi horror action RPG, including its story and more.

System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster is a modernization of the classic 1999 game, featuring a fully revamped co-op multiplayer mode that vastly improves upon the 1999 original and Nightdive's first System Shock 2 re-release from 2013. Cross-platform multiplayer between PC and consoles will be available in this definitive edition, along with remastered visuals and more.

System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster will be available on Windows PC (via Steam, GOG, and the Humble Bundle Store), PlayStation 4 (PS4), PlayStation 5 (PS5), Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch on June 26, 0225.

Set 42 years after the events of the first System Shock, antagonist SHODAN and her army of merciless mutants return to infest the starship Von Braun. Players embody a soldier who awakens from cryo-sleep with cybernetic implants grafted to his flesh. As he sets out to unravel the horrifying mystery of the derelict starship, he'll need to hone his upgradable skills and utilize powerful weapons and paranormal psionic abilities to survive the monstrous creations of SHODAN — and endure her narcissistic god complex.

Currently finishing my second playthrough of SS1R ahead of SS2, this time on PS5 (my first playthrough was on PC). And man, I really hope that Nightdive will create a better console UI. The current one is dreadful, scrolling the map or activating wares is super unintuitive on a controller.

Waiting for a Switch 2 port or a confirmation that the eventual update will be free.
At this stage it is a bit weird to not announce anything related to Switch 2. It's not like they're just relying on backwards compatibility, otherwise they wouldn't announce both PS4/PS5 and Xbox One/Xbox Series version, but omitting Switch 2 version.

I'm happy this is coming out, yet sad in 25 years we didn't really have anything in the same vein that surpasses.

One of the best games of all time. Turns out SS1 was as well, after playing the Nightdive remake.

I was fascinated with System shock 2 when it released. I hadn't played the first one so all the concepts of immersive sims were new to me. The horror, the audio logs, the music. One of the GOAT.

System Shock 2 will probably remain the best game Ken Levine has made. Incidentally, it's also the only game by Ken Levine I legitimately enjoy playing.

Please, please fix the respawning enemies. It got so tedious at the end!

I don't think that's going to be changed. SS1R had them as well and it was especially annoying in later levels like Engineering, because more elite enemies kept showing up.
Not gonna lie, killed both games for me. Never finished either. Git gud and all but limited resources + unlimited enemies is a combo that gives me crazy inventory anxiety and drives me nuts lol.

The game itself is great but the port sucks. The controls are terrible and the remaining bugs around it make it worse.

Co-op counts as multiplayer, yes. :messenger_winking_tongue:

PC version also had it.
A vague semblance of it, yeah. I watched my wife and her brother play it - or rather, try to. I think the story goes that the publisher forced them to develop a co-op mode, and the devs really didn't want to. So it was technically in there to satisfy their demand, but they didn't really bother making it function properly. The game would crash quite regularly in co-op mode, probably from desyncs.

It looked nothing as smooth as this. It's quite fascinating to see, and honestly, probably not a bad way to play the game after a proper first run. It's nice to have.

Wait, so respawning is worse in the sequel? Damn, I really hope Nightdive will address that in the remaster. Respawns in the remake of SS1 are dangerously close to what I find acceptable and that's only because I liked relying on power stations to get "free power" for energy weapons.

I found myself constantly refilling power because of the aggressive respawning. It became an OCD drama where I'd pop off a few shots, run back again lol. I know that's my own problem not the game's but boy. Those fucking invisible puff balls respawning was infuriating.

And yea, when I tried to replay SS2 on PC some years back, the respawning was really aggressive. Like kill mutants in a corrider, walk into a new room, walk back into corridor and the "action" music starts again and new enemies appeared.
