Take-Two says GTA 6’s delay will be ‘worth it’ and suggests it’s confident of no further slips

Rockstar Games parent Take-Two has said Grand Theft Auto 6 has been in development for at least five years and claimed that its recent delay will be "a worthy investment".

CEO Strauss Zelnick:

Grand Theft Auto VI began development in earnest in 2020 following the massive success of Red Dead Redemption 2, and the title is now the most anticipated entertainment property of all time. Rockstar expects to release Grand Theft Auto VI on May 26, 2026, which is in our Fiscal Year 2027. I believe affording Rockstar additional time for such a groundbreaking project is a worthy investment

The ambition and complexity of Grand Theft Auto VI is greater than any previous Rockstar title, and the team is poised to release another astonishing entertainment experience that will exceed players' expectations. I think historically when we set a specific date, generally speaking, we've been very good about reaching it

The game will sell bucketloads but the real test the shareholders will measure will be how it supplants GTA:O and if it rakes in the same amount of money.

Honestly at this point I wouldn't be surprised to see GTA:O be sub only with GTA+

I don't see how GTA VI matches GTA V in all honesty. It's been a perfect storm of a few things and multiple cross gen versions.

Will still be a massive success though

In an interview with IGN, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said, "I think historically when we set a specific date, generally speaking, we've been very good about reaching it."

And as for why GTA 6 was delayed: "As we get closer to completion of a title that's seeking perfection, the needs or lack thereof, for continued polish become clear," Zelnick said. "In this case, there was an opportunity with a small amount of incremental time, we thought, to make sure Rockstar Games achieves its creative vision with no limitations. And I supported, of course, that approach."

GTA 6 finally has an official release date, but instead of 2025, the game was pushed back to May 26, 2026.

Positive angle:

For GTAIV, GTAV & RDR2; once they set a specific release date rather than a general release period, they hit it. And for RDR1, they only missed it by a month.

I can ignore everything he said and doubt it but there's one thing I can't ignore and doubt because he's 100% correct:

I think historically when we set a specific date, generally speaking, we've been very good about reaching it

Them being so specific with the release date makes want to beleive them.

I hate how we don't get the same release date as consoles. You'd expect that from small companies and not from someone as massive as R*
That massive team is working on the best experience for consoles. Once that is finished the same massive team will work on the best experience for PC. We do not want a shitty port.

You think for a company as massive as R* they can't do it? But yeah of course, us PC gang are done with garbage ports in general

He's been saying this for a long time now and then it got delayed a full year.

And per Jason Schreier we know Rockstar devs apparently never believed in a 2025 release.

I wonder what they mean "in earnest" like as in full production? Cause if they started in 2020 thats less time than i would expect. But if it was in pre2018-2019 will full in 2020 that makes sense

I bet they are gonna limit what all you can do in the game a week or two after it comes out and only the first day players will get to play the real game.

I'd hate to have to wait a year after this launched to play it.

Also, the more I see Jason the more I know he will be a vic and this will be a revenge game. Dude is soft. No way he's a hard hitter like the job he got supposes. Dude's cruising for a bruising and his lady is gonna have to get revenge when he bites it. Game over man, game over. This is Lucia's game, Jason is just a side note. Look at the photo in the OP. She's setting there present, ready to ride or die, but he's miles away, looking at the wall with the 1000 yard stare over the dudes he had to beat up for money that day. No way dude survives in this world. He's sugar soft and rockstars art is too good for that to be a mistake. He's too good for this world and the narrative will be that he gets double crossed and killed and his girlfriend has to get revenge. He will probably be on his last job before they pack up for Miami and start their future together too. The first section of the game will give character dev and build up to his death which is probably inspired by FFVII and he will probably die in a similar point in the game as Aerith. That is good news because they are aiming for this story to be a goat and it could be with this type of setup. We will probably really like Jason before rockstar snuffs him out. Knowing them it will probably be a crooked cop working on the take who does him in. The more I talk about this the more accurate it will become.

So,all bullshit then huh, Strauss? Considering I can't even remember the last time a Rockstar game hasn't been hit by multiple delays!

How can anyone even take anything this scumbag says seriously after just blatantly lying like that?!

What a clown!

Bro, he is CEO of worldwide known super rich company, ofc to get and stay there he had to lie tru his teeth and do tons of nasty shit for at least 20 years- the thing is- we dont judge CEO's by their morals-we judge them by performance of their companies and here we got no complains.

Following an investor-staged takeover of Take-Two Interactive in 2007, Zelnick became the chairman, chief executive officer, and largest single shareholder of Take-Two.

Why on earth would I...as a player give two shits what some lying scumbag ceo earns for his company? Maybe that's the issue here, maybe we should judge ceo's based on their trust and accountability and not make it a normality for them to lie through their teeth. Maybe then we,as consumers, wouldn't be viewed like a bunch of walking wallets!

Pr0 tip- its not us, avg mortals who judge CEO's, i mean we can have an opinion about them but reality is- they are responsible only to their shareholders/owners.
TLDR- Since we talking about take two here- if gta6 sells gangbusters(200m+ copies) every1 will judge its CEO was right and did good job, and rightfully so. So far after we saw those 2 trailers they are on the right track, even with may 2026 delay, hell they could delay game to holidays 2027 and as long as it sells well it will still be fully justfified.

Oh sure I'm not saying the game shouldnt be delayed or that it wouldn't make the same money. I just expect transparancy. If they treat me as a consumer with no respect, like garbage,I can just as well do the same and pirate their game(Not necessarily regarding Take Two but as industry as a whole)
