What in the 2014-iphone-game is this shit?

I *always* fucking forget that this is a LOTR game and keep thinking there's a new Tales Of game that I didn't hear about

I keep forgetting the existence of this game. It looks terrible. Like an accident. You want to look away but you can't. I read Tales of and thought of the JRPG series. Until I realised what we´re talking about here. Nope ... no matter how long they delay it ... if they don't scrap it and start again, the game and I won't be friends anymore.

Please don't bullshit us with the "it's not aimed at core gamers" line. This is objectively shit and should be mocked and ridiculed roundly.

just remember, not only did someone think in their head to make this, someone else greenlit it saying it's a good idea :messenger_tears_of_joy:
It's a pretty good idea, whether or not the studio will execute who knows. There's a new "genre" of games aimed for people who like a more "cozy" gaming experience, popular examples of games that would fit under that genre are animal crossing, star dew valley and harvest moon and the sims but there a bunch more lately in the indie scene: If they are going to make a cozy life sim game based on an IP, the hobbits of LOTR is a pretty fitting choice.

It's a good idea for a game IMO, regardless of who it's targeted at. I know my daughters would absolutely love it after I introduced them to Story of Seasons.

It's just the modern dayisms that clash with the IP.

Is there some secret competition where everyone making a game based on the LOTR IP is trying to see who cane make the absolutely ugliest looking game?

It's just the unfortunate result of the Tolkien estate whoring out the IP to anyone and everyone. There seems to be no consideration to nurture it.

I wonder how many more games need to bomb before this stops being a thing.

At some point the industry has to course-correct, no?
Nothing lasts forever. I've been speculating that 2024 will be the turning point but who knows.

I'm not expecting this game to be terrible mind you. I like the idea of a cozy game set in Hobbiton. It's just the little things that are impossible to not notice when those types are involved creatively. YMMV I guess

The environment models are nicely done, interesting topology. But the textures are way too simple. Some have a bit of hand-painted work done on them but the brushwork is too simplified and blurry. Oozes a vibe of laziness and not caring about the craft.

Ni no Kuni, a game from 2011. Same artstyle and a lot less VRAM budget for texture sizes. Just look at the density of detail.

I am all for non-photorealistic rendering in games but most modern devs don't do it justice the way PS2, PS3 generation of JRPG developers did.
