I am a Trance/Happy hardcore/Acid House/Speedcore/Hard House/Ambient fan.

Earthbound/Prodigy/Antiloop/Dune are among my favs from the 90s.

Just anything with really fucked up drum programming that no one else likes.

Have you heard the Anti EP by Autechre? Seems like that would be right up your street. Autechre recorded the track 'Flutter' as a protest against the Criminal Justice Bill in the UK (specifically pertaining to repetetive beats):-

"Warning: Lost and Djarum contain repetitive beats. We advise you not to play these tracks. If the Criminal Justice Bill becomes law. Flutter has been programmed in such a way that no bars contain identical beats and can therefore be played at 45 or 33 revolutions under the proposed law. Howeve we advise DJs to have a lawyer and musicologist present at all times to confirm the non repetitive of the music in the event of police harrasment.

Important:
By breaking this seal, you accept full responsibilty for any consequential action resulting from the products use, as playing the music contained within these recordings may be interpreted as oppostion to the Criminal Justice and Public Order Bill." :lol :lol :lol

Although this might seem like a gimmick, if you've any interest in drum programming, beats etc, it's an interesting track to listen to.

Can't believe this thread went for this long with noone mentioning Orbital. One of the best and most influental electronic music bands. Their first four albums should be an ABC for anyone who has even a passing interest in electronic music, and a listening material even for those who don't.

I hate labels for music in general.

Agreed wholeheartedly. There are only two genres of music IMO , good music and bad music. Although in saying that sometimes bad music can be good music :lol

Actually the only music i really *dislike* is BLAND music. Although i'll probably be vilified for this opinion I'm looking at "emperors new clothes" artists such as Coldplay here. *UGGGHHHHHHH*

No offense to anyone who said they don't like "techno" but chances are you probably have a very narrow view on the subject. There are so many different styles of what is considered electronic music that it is virtually impossible to have one broad opinion of electronic music as a collective unit.

I like all genres/sub-genres of electronic music to an extent. I'm very open-minded to different styles and artists because I love music :) That said, I do have a definite preference for Drum & Bass/Jungle over all other genres. Or maybe I should say that what comes out of that scene interests me the most in electronic music nowadays.

I've got their whole discography. :) Autechre's not one of my favorites because of their varying quality and crazy experimentation, but they're always interesting.

I had no idea about the background of the Anti EP... I just googled it, thanks for the info! That's awesome.

I didn't like it til earlier this year. I know this girl who's a DJ and she loves it. It's this Fuse-In festival in Detorit that has been going on since Saturday and she went to it. I've been listening to Fuse In on XM (thank god) for over 30 hours now and it's pretty good. Aux 88 was really good. Even Redman showed up. It ends at midnight :(

I doff my cap to you sir. Not only are the albums superb (with the possible exception of The Altogether which is simply good), they are one of, if not the best live acts i've ever seen. Imapct USA and Chime live are things of beauty. :D

I don't like that much "techno" music but I do like a lot of Electronic Music. Actually, I'm not that familiar with the genre (or bazillion subgenres) but I do enjoy listening to Kraftwerk, Massive Attack, Tangerine Dream, and Air.

i went through a phase of being absolutely obsessed with autechre, bought all their albums and went loco listening to them non stop on the computer, in the car, on the ipod etc... i've kind of drifted away from it a bit now but i'm still blown away by tri repetae/chiastic slide when i go back and listen to them. and i sometimes fall asleep listening to confield which does funny things to my brain..

boards of canada are up there as well for me - are they due a new album soon? along with 'systemische' by oval, which was (as i understand) created by manipulating the sound from scratched cd's skipping. one of the tracks on systemische samples a track from aphex twin's selected ambient works 2 - another of my all time favourites :D susumu yokota is also pretty cool for some more organic-sounding electronic stuff.. not sure if it's danceable though :p

Ditto. A band i used to be in (indie rock) used the Autchre track 'Chatter' from Artificial Intelligence II as in intro tape a few times - great track for setting some mood! :D

I'd have to give Tri Repetae the nod as being their best work though, although Amber comes close.

Seen Autcehre live a couple of times and the only artist i've seen that is more on the verge of losing it is Mike Paradinas (U-Ziq) - seen Mike Paradinas supporting Leftfield once and he blew me away.

Boards of Canada is my absolute favorite, even though it's way more ambient and hip-hop based than any of the mostly experimental stuff that I like. "Music Has the Right to Children" is the world's perfect album.

Most beautiful album I've ever heard in my life! I absolutely love the vintage sound of this album, especially the "Kaini Industries" and "Bocuma" tracks. I've been trying to find stuff that's similar to the old "In search of" tracks and this album is probably the closest I've come so far. Can anyone recommend some more stuff like this?

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
Like Jobber I spent the weekend listening to Fuse In on XM - some really awesome stuff on there. I'm not super hardcore into techno but I've warmed up to the genre in recent months - bought Carl Cox's latest album (Pure Intec) - got some good funky, Latin-influenced techno on there. My favorite type now - I'm not too much of a fan of the Jeff Mills style or the super drummy, Marco Bailey/Chris Liebing/Umek style. I like a lot of the older, more classic techno tracks - someone in this thread mentioned the Belleville 3... Cybotron - Clear is an awesome song, one of the first popular electro/techno tracks (the song was even featured in Vice City!). Ron Trent - Altered States is another favorite of mine. Don't really care much for the really minimal type techno, (funny enough, I took an art class in college and my teacher was a minimal techno artist and good friends with Richie Hawtin) although Aril Brikha makes some nice tunes. So yeah, I have the utmost respect for the genre but it's not my "thing", per se.

And yeah, I obviously like trance. Unfortunately, a lot of people can't seem to get over the 2000-2001 period where trance was everywhere and the glut of it was Lasgo/Ian Van Dahl style guido garbage. It's definitely improved a lot more in recent times... Progressive trance is by far my favorite style of music in general, though - it relies more on melody and ambiance than overdone drumrolls, diva vocals, and the same old appergiating synths.

I listen to mostly electronic music (with some hip hop, campy 80's pop and game music thrown in there) and go to see DJs when they come to town - going to see Sasha this weekend and Armin Van Buuren next weekend.

Ishkur comes off as an anti-elitist twat (he quickly writes off all elitist genres like prog or techno, but proclaims the most obscure type music like Italian disco as the greatest - which makes him elitist in his own way)... but he's a big Langrisser/Satoshi Urushihara fan so I really can't complain.

Another artist not mentioned yet:-

DJ Shadow.

"Endtroducing" is essential listening to anyone that likes music IMO

I would like to quote and repeat this for emphasis:

DJ Shadow.

"Endtroducing"

Hell, get all the albums from him, they are all great, beautiful things.

If you dig downtempo and groovy, slowed vibes, I would recommend Lemon Jelly.

I agree. Other electronic music bands should watch and learn (well, should have :p) from them. Orbital were really amazing on the stage, for sure better than any electronic music live act I've ever seen, and to me personally more enjoyable than even 'regular' music bands that i've seen performing live.

I'm a huge fan of IDM and I've got hundreds upon hundreds of Electronica albums (seriously, I have way, way too many), but I still fail to see the brilliance in BoC's Music Has The Right To Children. It is a very good album, I agree, but better than Geogaddi? No way. It may be because I heard Geogaddi first and it because one of my all time favorite albums even before I heard MHTRTC, but I feel out of place when I see everyone proclaiming it's so amazing when it's a solid 8.5/10 for me. Oh well...

i love this album - but for me geogaddi nails it.. MHTRTC i think has better melodies but the overall feel of geogaddi is much darker and heavier ('the beach at redpoint' being my absolute favourite track - the sound is so desolate but so familiar at the same time).

also - have you heard the 'in a beautiful place out in the country' EP? 'amo bishop roden' is probably my favourite BoC track; so evocative of a certain period in my life and immediately makes me think of my childhood, people i've lost, pets etc.. pretty powerful stuff. for me, the whole EP kinda strikes a middle ground between the lighter stuff on MHTRTC and the darker undertones of geogaddi..

Two other essentials IMO :-

LFO : Frequencies

LFO : Advance

Great stuff, Frequencies tends to get better review but i prefer Advance. Either way they are both fantastic.

I listened to Frequencies last night due to this thread, and it still blows me away. Love is the Message, Simon from Sydney and LFO are just timeless.
