Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) repeatedly grilled Sierra Club President Aaron Mair Tuesday, asking whether his organization would issue a formal retraction if evidence contrary to his global warming testimony were provided to the environmental group.

Mair had testified during a Senate hearing that “our planet is cooking and heating up and warming.”

Cruz, who said that recent satellite data did not show a warming trend, asked Mair whether he would retract his statement if the data were given to him.

“Is it the Sierra Club’s position as you just testified, that the Earth is cooking up and heating and warming right now? Is that the Sierra Club’s position?” Cruz asked.

“Global temperatures are on the rise sir,” Mair replied.

“And I assume that the Sierra Club would issue a public retraction if confronted with the facts?” Cruz asked. “That the data are precisely as I described. That over the last 18 years there has been no significant warming. And indeed that is why global alarmists invented the term ‘the pause’ to explain what they call the pause in global arming because the data demonstrate what you just said that the Earth is cooking and warming is not backed up by the data.”

“We are concurring with 97 percent of the scientists that say the exact opposite, sir,” Mair replied.

Cruz wasn’t satisfied.

“So if the data are contrary to your testimony, would the Sierra Club issue a retraction?” the Texas senator asked.

“Sir, we concur with the 97 percent scientific consensus with regards to global warming,” Mair answered.

“I’d like to repeat the question and get an answer,” Cruz quipped back. “If the data are contrary to your testimony, would the Sierra Club issue a retraction?”

Mair still did not answer the question.

“We concur with 97 percent of the scientists that believe the anthropogenic impact of mankind with regards to global warming are true,” the Sierra Club president said.

“So does that mean you are not willing to answer the question?” Cruz asked.

The only logical explanation is that he does this to get press coverage and further cement his name recognition, if not his ideals with the Tea Party contingent.

He should have responded with "if facts come out providing evidence to suggest that you are a dumb fucking idiot, will you admit that you are a dumb fucking idiot?"

"... and he isn't ready to discuss the evidence beyond asserting that we should take their word for it."

What. The guy is taking the word of 97% of scientists. Does Cruz not understand how numbers work? Does he think 97% is a minority or something? Even if he could find evidence that supported his "nah, there's no such thing as climate change, it's fine" hypothesis, I really doubt he'd be doing his own research so he'd be "taking their word for it too".

Jesus Christ that video was even more painful than I imagined. Cruz is an idiot. He repeatedly brought up discredited talking points and said they were "facts". The Sierra club guy answered the question immediately by saying that there was no pause which is correct and Cruz just ignored him.

you can't get 3 out of 5 people to agree on anything and they want to believe 97% of scientists agree on something?

I never seen such amazing Youtube comments. I am literally fucking floored at the spin people have here to deny climate change.

How, in 2015 and with greater access to information, that these individuals consistently fail to match data with understanding?

Why is Cruz trying to pretend he's an expert on this? Why are you questioning the scentist that studies this and knows more than you? Dumb ass.

Yeah, what the hell is this "Pause" crap. Never even heard of it. Can someone provide a good source reading about it?

Not sure about the bias of the site, but Skeptical Science goes into some depth. From what I understand of what I read, people who cling to this "pause" talking point are talking solely about surface temperature measurements. The problem is that most of the increase in thermal energy has been going into the oceans, particularly the deep oceans. And of course, you know what happens to the volume of water as it is heated. Then there are the adverse effects of all life in the ocean that can't necessarily adapt to temperature shifts.

"If the preponderance of high quality evidence shows what you claim, I will retract my position and adopt yours. Now, will you grant the same to me?"

Well, take this graph from the 5th IPCC Physical Science Basis Assessment Report, Summary for Policymakers:

Clearly, no significant warming in the last 18 years.

The other part is using statistical manipulation by using 1998 as a starting point or near starting point. Since 1998 was a outlier with record warm temperatures it skews the data into appearing like a slow down.
