Totally agree here - i know this stuff is subjective, but I cant say I'm thrilled with any of the new character designs besides the proposed Muslim fighter.
Low-tier hype levels at this stage, I'm sure that will change in time but sad as Tekken is one of my favourite franchises of all time (see avatar).

Well, that escalated quickly. They clearly designed the character for the Asian market, they know Alisa and Lili are popular, but didn't expect such a reaction from the west. If you watch tournament footage, you'll see Asian players use a ton of goofy customizations, so obviously they like the game having a silly, lighthearted look.

The hate is nuts Tekken has always been anime but kept a posture about it. Now it's gonna have idol like characters and everyone is all in shambles. She's great and I hope people stop being selfish and let everyone from around the world have a character. Like 50 characters in the series for goodness sake..

That's the thing, Harada has said many times that the roster of Tekken 7 is going to be trimmed down compared to previous games. Not quite to Tekken 4 levels, but fewer characters than Tekken 6. When we're potentially missing out on classic mainstays for characters like Chloe, some people get a little annoyed.

Except you're not missing a classic character for her, you're at most missing a different new character instead.
Game has plenty confirmed so far with only 3 being new characters.
I suppose that's an issue in and of itself.
Still the, "pick a different fighter, there's like 50/100/1,000" mentality doesn't work. If that were the case, I wouldn't mind Chloe at all. As it stands, none of my favorite characters have been confirmed for the game (and I've got more than a few), and none of the officially confirmed newcomers look terribly appealing to me.
(also, what's up with all the "C" names? Catalina, Claudio, Chloe...)
If they really wanted to make a change, just make the Catgirl parts of Chloe customizations- I think if Chloe didn't have the catgirl stuff people wouldn't be so bad. It just screamed "pandering" in terms of design.
I do think this is not just about Chloe, but about a feeling in general that Tekken is growing stale by pandering to the longtime players and not trying to grow the pie the way other franchises did.
If Harada's serious (and I don't think he is, I think he's just being stupid), and the char did get cut, I'd pass on the game if I had the option to buy it. I'd just grab DOA instead if VF isn't out on PC.
Well I think it's more to do with the fact that she is just a terribly designed character for Tekken rather than the specific anime trope she falls under. You mention King and the Jacks but these are great, iconic character designs that have stood the test of time. Tekken used to serve up amazing character designs all the way to Tek 5 but things have dropped off a cliff since then. This is a new low though.
Well I mean it won't have that many characters but im sure it would be enough to please eveyone no? Also we all know dlc or another version of the game will happen with more added characters and such.
Usually it have customisables for each character. TTT2 and Tekken 5-6 had it.

Tekken doesn't really do new versions outside of arcades, and those only add one or two characters. DLC, maybe. Unfortunately it'll probably be paid this time, since Tekken Tag 2 didn't do as well as it should have.

Mate, Gon was a joke character. This Lucky Chloe is an actual character reveal meant to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the characters they have introduced in this way in the past (Jin, Eddie, Hwaorang, Raven, Feng Wei etc etc).

Who says Chloe is a main character? And Gon is just an example of how dumb Tekken is, it's a tiny cartoon dinosaur. Would you prefer that I linked the realistic boxing dinosaur? How about the disco break dance fighter? Or the literal angel? Or maybe one of the many robots? Tekken characters have been dumb forever, if you don't like Chloe then that's fine, but don't bullshit outrage at her "not being Tekken" because Tekken has done whatever it's wanted forever.

I think Harada's trolling, if he's serious and Namco doesn't overrule him, then well, they deserve to have the game tank out of sheer stupidity.

Yeah, and those were hidden characters from back in the day who only became mainstays after they ran out of ideas for characters/story/evolution. But within context, they fit. Xiao met that archetype perfectly fine within Tekken's universe. It wasn't until guest artists came in with hpyerstylized designs did Tekken start veering off into this kind of pandering.
Those characters weren't iconic when they came out, they were kind of embarrassing. They also had a string of 'pretty much the same' characters when you look at the Heihachi family tree, something Capcom was also guilty of creating endless Ryu variants.

No, her design (as well as Claudio and others) take me right out. I used to enjoy learning about new martial arts and the folks behind the mo-cap work before they started coming up with these kinds of shitty designs.
What I believe he is saying is: every Tekken there has been a group of "main characters" that are revealed and added to the game. These are generally a better class of character than any hidden/joke/sub boss characters you might find. They are headline additions if you will. I'm sure I am forgetting a few but here they are:
Tekken 2 - Lei, Jun
Tekken 3 - Jin, Hwaorang, Xiaoyu, Eddie
Tekken 4 - Steve, Marduk, new Jin
Tekken 5 - Feng Wei, Raven
Tekken 6 - Bob, Miguel, Zafina, Leo <----problem started here
