Tesla Cybertruck reveal (OP)

Battery replacement costs, the incredibly specialized knowledge and tools needed to do any work on them, the massive amount of complicated electronics that can and will fail.

I’ve been discovering an appreciation for simple cars that last a long time and you can do your own maintenance on. That’s how you really save money. These cars are the opposite of that.

I want to see how they are holding up when they get to be 5+ years old and where they fit in with their resale values. I don’t get the impression they’re built to last.

I was with Chevy for 10 years before Tesla and even our older cars hold up extremely well as compared to a company that’s been around for 100 years. You have to understand we aren’t paid on commission or sales so there’s no incentive to upsell the customer either. They honestly just want you to enjoy your car.

I’m a combustion engine guy. I have a CTS-V and a Trailblazer SS and I’d have absolutely no issues putting my wife in a Tesla. The cars are well made.

Had I not been used to a big home and property and not had a family, I'd have hopped on. I would still love to work for Tesla :p I just couldn't take the financial hit. I was blown away by Fremont and Palo Alto. I went though like 18 interviews, and spent a day on site. You are doing many things right, BUT, your purchasing department at the time I interviewed was in shambles. So many sales reps and companies I deal with still complain about your... lack of planning. You work in a different world though.

I’m on the service side as opposed to sales. My buddy who left our center and went to Fremont has been trying to get me to transfer to California for the past year and I just won’t do it lol. I’m sure my wife would love to but the East Coast is where I’m staying.

The biggest issue is not in engineering quality, but in assembly quality. You all need to adopt Japanese style standards.

I won't lie, my M3 required adjustments at delivery that took all of 15 minutes to fix, panel gap alignment and whatnot. Shit that H*nda wouldn't ever allow off the line.

If a person cannot work on the vehicle themselves and most mechanic shops cannot, I don't see how the cost of maintenance won't skyrocket due to specialization.

I wish I could delve further into this one with you but I can’t. You must’ve been an early dual motor adopter though. Probably 20K-30K VIN range...

Vin 4068XX.

They didn't put my right tail light in correctly, and the RR door was misaligned. Other than that she's perfect.

It was all fixed and again, its the best car I have ever owned.

Unless you’re delving into the battery the maintenance isn’t any different than a regular car. Except there’s no oil to change etc.

By regular, do you refer to a modern car? Because modern cars present the same problem to buyers. Increasingly hard to maintain yourself and increasingly pricey in maintenance. Electronics and computer systems being a main culprit.

$150 in Australia and I’m sure we’ll be in for a wait but rather be first in door if nothing better comes out before then.

Well, yes. But it’s not some crazy inflated price. The labor rate is basically the same as any other shop so whatever the hours are of the job is what you’d pay out of warranty.

Electric motors have very little maintenance requirements compared to an ICE. Far less moving parts, minimal lubrication requirements. You don't need a 10k mile oil change in them. (You don't need a 3k mileage oil chance in modern ICE cars as well) Modern lubricants and engine design make them more efficicient, BUT not like an EV.

(Edit)

An EV may need some maintenance every 100k miles or so on the powertrain, if even that often. Naturally you need new brake pads or tires before that. Though arguably due to regenerative breaking, the need for pad replacement is minimal.

As mentioned, there is little need for maintenance.

Naturally a failed motor is a big deal, but it is more like swapping out a bad GPU on a computer than tearing down an engine to replace a blown head gasket. It is a different paradigm.

Perhaps. If EVs increase then parts should increase and costs go down. (Hopefully.) They may have an advantage in that the climate impact happens at the battery creation rather than in owning and running the vehicle, so they escape pricely regulations that hinder ICE maintenance costs.

It’s been great. I’ve really enjoyed my time with the company although I do have to be careful of what I say online lol
Godspeed and beware San Jose.
Having spent the majority of my adolescence there, the place is full of human leeches that will take you for everything you're worth if you let them.

Foods good tho! Just stay frosty in the bay, SPECIFICALLY San Jose.

The price is going down on them. It's cheaper in the long run to buy a 40k Model 3 than a 30K Camry or Accord. Based on fuel usage and maintenance over the span of ownership.

I didn't buy my M3 based on that though, I bought mine because of the instant torque and ridiculous acceleration. Go drive one. Everything else feels stupid after.

And when I say stupid, I mean why would you invest in buggy whips kind of stupid.

I like the features and the interior is nice, but I can't be alone in thinking it looks stupid as shit on the outside right? Guys?? Bueller?

I love 80's sci-fi as much as the next guy but this is going too far.

It's like they took all the design language they have been going with since the Model S and threw it in the garbage and drew a PS1 polygonal car instead. How the fuck did they go from my Model 3 to this thing? I want whatever Elon is smoking, it's the good shit.

You can tell Musk was bothered by the cracked glass for the rest of the presentation. It somewhat ruined the clean futuristic aesthetic of the Cyber Truck.

Ha with that many straight lines the factory are going to have to be on the ball with panel gaps... but this is Tesla so i'm not going to hold my breath.

I'm not against a polygonal look but this looks so amateur I wouldn't be surprised if Elon himself designed it after looking up a couple of tutorials on 3d modeling.

I’m having a real hard time believing 14,000 pound towing capacity...if true, gatdamn.

Tesla Lowpoly would be a more suitable name. I like how Tesla is trying to recreate futuristic design from many sci-fi flicks, but they've failed with this one.

Eh? It’s not my cup of tea but then I’m not exactly it’s target consumer. It’d be interesting to sit in one though just to check out what the all round visibility is like with all those sharp angles.

And being British that’s as far as my criticism of anything Elon Musk goes I’m afraid. Don’t wanna risk being called a pedo or anything.

The jokes are funny, and I don’t know if I like the look, but I applaud them for doing something different from every vehicle ever.

It’s unique, it stands out as a brand, and it’s probably getting them a ton of attention they wouldn’t have gotten otherwise.

Maybe I’ll even get used to it. Plenty of fashions, styles, and designs start off a little weird looking, especially if disruptive, but quickly move to be accepted and thought of really positively.

I think at one point we needed to end up with cars that reused 80s / 90s SciFi designs for distopian futures. I can live with that^^ Not that I will ever own such a car or need it in any capacity.
