Testing the Limits of Mass Effect Andromeda's Character Creator

She is a character in the game, on the Tempest.

No way.... no fucking way... Her animations are ps2 levels of bad. And this is insulting to ps2 if you consider late ps2 titles ...

Yeah, I am probably rolling default.

I don't understand, if you saw that, you saw all the rest.

So, the fuck you doin' ?

With the presets as base, some of them can look better than default Ryder. Especially with the dorky hair they picked for him that you can't change.

Just using an example. I will of course mess around with it, but I am not finding any of the presets appealing enough even as a base. We shall see.

I knew better than to expect the custom faces to look good, this is Mass Effect after all, but I'm still very disappointed.

I'm looking forward to all the hilarious abominations that people will create though, the Ugly Shepard meme was one of the best things the original trilogy spawned.

To me it looks workable.

I would like to see the eye/mouth/nose type changeable, but I am not going to lose sleep over it.

I am actually looking forward the the Ugly Ryders people are going to make. It does make me laugh even though I can't play with an ugly character. (Tried with DA 2)

Think im going to have to role with the default ryder.

Was really hoping the presets would be better. Im not a huge CAC guy so i'm not one to fiddle around with this thing for an hr just to get it exactly how i want it.

Anyone know whats up with the history part where you choose if you were male/fem shep from the trilogy?

Of course, but from that very unappealing preset, you can turn it around like that :

And while it's a shame we can't customize them more, I guess it was the price to pay to guarantee that the CC have as much care put into them as the defaults, unlike the previous trilogy.

Now I still think it's a huge improvement over this horror :

They use the same shaders so don't mind the lightning looking better.

I have seen some decent preset bases given what we can change, we can probably tweak proportions to make some really compelling results :) .

I've always been pretty satisfied by the results of MEs character creator myself, more so than other games. At least I could always arrive at something I liked. That being said there are far too few skin tones and hairstyles, considering they probably had a fair bit of time to put them in. I don't look for anything too crazy from those two departments, but I've seen ppl on reddit and other places noting the lack of options.

It's strange that they cut options considering it feels like such an intrinsic part of ME. We'll see.

That's nice. I prefer default Ryder over that creation, but like I said, I am definitely going to play with it and see what happens.

I'm just going to assume that they had to limit the options of the character creator due to the fact that Alec Ryder takes on traits from both of the twins. Also disappointed by the options for hair; I was hoping they'd really step up their game there after Inquisition.

I may be able to work with a handful of the presets to make the kind of face I want; they are better than what we've been offered in the past...

[EDIT] -
From the Mass Effect Community thread:
Oh, snap!

Crossing fingers for more hair options.

The plus side being that they don't look like shit "ingame" anymore thanks to quality control and forcing models skeleton on the users.

You can still change them significantly to alter their looks as illustrated above.

Assuming this is true, this is an underrated point. With enough work, I could always make a custom character in ME or Dragon Age that didn't look like garbage in the creator, but at the price of accepting that his/her facial expressions would look wonky in a large percentage of the dialogue sequences.

I am more than happy to give up customization options if there's a serious improvement in the facial animations of custom characters.

What is going on with the eyes? Is some kind of shader or something with the lighting off? Because almost every time I see a character in these videos its like the eyes have just literally been painted on the head with acrylic paint or something. They just look way too bright and have this flat coloring to them. Its really bizarre.

As usual on PC, mods will really help.

Will they though? I know there were some mods for DA:I but mods for Frostbite games seem fairly limited compared to past BioWare games.

The more I see of this game, the more disappointed I get. I'm sure the overall product will still be good, but this is a step back from a previous console generation...Makes no sense.

The characters always look dead to me in these games. Like wooden marionette puppets. I've never understood the appeal.

I've always hated Mass effect's character creator and it looks like they barely bother updating it

It's obvious they want us to stick to the default options

So does this partially dispell the argument that the facial animations are so poor because of the breadth and differences provided by character creation options?

This is virtually nothing like the old CC.

Wonder if you can make a decent black character.

They used black models as base so yeah. As in I don't know if they are "good" but they're not any worse than the white characters.

I think at this point it's akin to beating a dead horse but a valid criticism nonetheless- Bioware can't create good look human female characters & it's largely to do with hair (& even skin shader to an extent).

So does this partially dispell the argument that the facial animations are so poor because of the breadth and differences provided by character creation options?

Guess that'd depend largely on whether the default models suffer the same issues.

PS: Someone will hopefully create an Obama lookalike like they did with previous entries.

The character creator was one of the few things I was excited to see and it's a step back from Inquisition. This is incredibly disappointing.
