Unlike Indian or Chinese, I never quite know what to order in a Thai restaurant. I'm open to anything so long as its not vegetarian, so reccommend me some great dishes. Preferably with descriptions as to why you reckon they rock.
Pad Thai is what everyone gets, so I think it's a safe bet.
I'm not good w/ Thai food names, but I like their dishes with the flat wide rice noodles (kinda like Chinese chow fun). The last restaurant I went to had 2 kinds. One in chili sauce and another in a chow fun-like sauce. Both are good.
Also, I like anything with duck, but it is a pretty fatty meat. So damn good, though!
I often order See Mee (sometimes called Koi See Mee, depending on the restaurant). Deep fried noodles topped with gravy and all manner of vegetables, and some sort of meat (chicken or shrimp, usually).
Pad Kee Mow is heaven on a plate. It's wide rice noodles with bell pepper, basil, curry, egg, and other Thai spices. I'd say it's my favorite Thai dish.
The Mrs. loves Pad See Euw, which is also good IMO but too sweet for my tastes.
My ultimate favorite is shrimp Chu Che (pronounced shu she). served with rice, it's a coconut paste/cream with bamboo shoots, green peas and a STRONG taste of ginger! don't let the pinkish orangeish color intimidate you. it's complex and tastes really good. it helps if you like ginger.
It comes in various degree's of spice at the restuarant I go to. From a little bite to "OMFG I'M ON FIRE"! So, choose according to your tastes. However, You really can't go wrong with this dish. It's sliced up chicken in a light sauce, full of unique Thai flavors. It's awesome and tastes even better over white rice.
