Thank You For Smoking

Just saw this yesterday and have to declare it the best comedy of this year so far. It's about Nick Naylor (Aaron Eckhart), a tobacco lobbyist, and his dealings around Hollywood to promote the wellness of smoking. The dialogue is witty, fast paced, and hilarious. Eckhart is AMAZING as a pompous asshole who is completely full of himself and spouts endless lies, but you can't help cheering for him anyway. This is also a first movie for director Jason Reitman and his style is pretty cool. The only bad casting choice is Katie Holmes because she looked like ass and wasn't convincing in her role. William H. Macy is also fuckin hilarious.

Yeah, it still seems to be on limited release here, which sucks, looks very interesting. Plus I'm a William H Macy fan, lol.

I didn't think it was that good. The stire isn't very clever and it was pretty slow for the most part.

They kept on describing Katie Holme's character as having "amazing tits"

Rob Lowe was good

:lol

If Katie Holmes' character is supposed to have "amazing tits," then they cast the wrong actress.

I just drove by one of our local theaters, and I saw this on the marquee... had no idea what it was until I happened upon this post -- sounds great! I'll have to check it out this week if I have time... I haven't been to an actual movie theater since summer `05.

Neither have I, I just might go to one for this movie.

I really liked the movie a lot. Katie Holmes was the only thing I didn't like about it.
This same paraphrase could be used towards Batman Begins. Funny that.

Is this based on the book I read?

The one with a name...

Had an author and everything...

Guy gets covered with patches...

I did my half.

Wow, there are tons of books that you read that are clearly going to hit one screen or another... this is not one of them. If it is even half as good as a book, I am fan before viewing.

Early to the Party... I saw this movie a couple weeks ago. I haven't been able to stop talking about it since, ok that's a lie, but it's funny and smart, and it doesn't devolve into the typical holly type of story. One of the main themes of the film is that if one argues correctly one can't be wrong. The dialog between the MOD squad alone is worth the price of admission and yet there are some great moments with Nick and his son which is really the crux of the film.

:lol She didn't bother me in Batman Begins, but yeah...seems to be the general consensus for both movies. Not the sort of rep you want to attain.

As for the movie, I hope to see it at some point...if not in theatres, then definetly on DVD.

Finally saw the movie yesterday...it's just a laugh riot. I was rooting hard for Nick Naylor in almost every single scene. It's pretty cool in that it shows how completey full of shit both sides of the smoking issue are. It's also hilarious that they didn't show one lit cigarette during the movie. :lol

A little late to the party, but I saw this last night and had a good time. Not movie of the year or anything (and the friend I went with said, "That felt like a film-school exercise"), but funny enough. Beautiful production design on the cheap, and a great opening title sequence. Aaron Eckhart was great. Katie Holmes was miscast, but I'm having trouble thinking of a movie in which she wouldn't be.

Best line:
"You know that guy that always gets the girl? I'm him. On crack."

I haven't seen this movie, but I did read Buckley's "Florence of Arabia." He's "meh" as a writer, but I'd be interested in similar authors/titles if anyone has any recs.

I saw it this past weekend and really enjoyed it. Although it's quite funny, the ease with which Nick Naylor manipulates everyone is kind of a sobering takeaway.

Saw it tonight and loved it; although its not as good as the book (but what is?). Nick is just a great character. I was surprised that in a pretty large city its only playing in two theaters. I guess it just doesnt have a big range of audience to contend with.

For some weird reason the previews gave me the impression this was a new tv series, not a movie. No idea why. Looks good though.
