Hi there, you probably don't know but this piano competition is considered the "Olympics" of piano competitions and it also happens every 4 years, if you like Chopin's music and have time to watch the live stream on the first round, you can do so by clicking here

Day 1 Phase 1 = done

Day 1 Phase 2 = done

Day 2 Phase 1 LIVE = https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIQeQbVXmHI&pxtry=1

Germans and probably other countries will need Firefox with proxtube cause otherwise you get a "sorry, legal rights issue, can't display".

I will be coming here to comment on the participants.

so the British guy just finished.

I don't think he had a "great" round, he played nicely and the Kawai sounds great, didn't expect it to but it has a nice sound but I think he won't get past this round.

some problems in the scherzo, I mean, it's too basic when you can't get the main octave theme at the beginning cleanly, this is the chopin competition ffs. He was about to nail the coda quite nicely but then missed that one bass tone after the arpeggio, he rushed into it and was a bit careless.

I think Chopin isn't his composer, I will take a guess and say he's great with greman repertoire.

Not lacking in passion though, nice parts.

Thank you very much OP! I'm so glad you brought this piano competition to my attention. I played piano in my youth for about 7 years but haven't played anything consistently since then. I can't critically evaluate the performances but I can enjoy listening to them. :)

Thanks, great post! I got to see Rafal Blechacz play a few years ago at Duke. He swept this competition in 2005, taking all five 1st prizes.

She is sounding very good right now.

dat nerves of steel, way more stable than the past competitor.

yeah, sounded a bit distant at the beginning of the nocturne but got better as she got more into it,

the etudes, the second one, the black key stude, damn fine: crispy and shiny :) that was competition level, perfect, it sounded like a CD recording,

will have to miss the fantasy in f minor, but I guess she may still be in the run depending on the rest of the field at the end

EDIT: Damn, beautiful last part of the fantasy.

damn, it's hard to pull it off with that Op.10 Nr. 11 the girl from italy played well but doesn't looks as free and relaxed, not only the sound but her body language.

all things said: Boring :/ I don't think there was a moment of excitement

Thanks for sharing. This is something that's is very interesting to watch. Going to have on the background while I try to to do some programming classwork.
Reading the chat full of piano players is showing they are seeing things I will never notice which makes me wish I was disciplined enough to make myself learn piano.

Martha Argerich sitting to the side and chatting with Dang Thai Son ^_^ lolol

it continues

EDIT: this girl has her hands shaking... bad sign... but sounds nice, hopefully she can control it and relax

the french guy by far the worst, so far.

*Hideous redention of the otherwise wonderful 4th ballade

(edit: *yeah hyperbole, but I didn't like it)

I almost cried with the revolutionary etude by this chinese girl, she blew me away, as of now a HUGE fan.

at last a participant with a pair of balls, someone who plays with authority, first day didn't disappoint.

WHAT?? I am sorry!!

omg, he's a guy!! awesome.

and yeah the Fantasy was the low point. still, the etudes bought him the ticket to next round, the best pair of etudes out there, I missed half of todays participants though, anyone heard them?? anyone excepcional today?

I am hearing Yiruka Kimura, correct but uninteresting piano playing, damn boring nocturne,

Dinara Klinton, Ukraine:

gotta give it to her, great etudes, the 2nd one maybe a bit too fast but the first one that was great and I know damn well it's from the hardest lol

Aimi Kobayashi, Japan:

in her nocturne sounds like her right hand is dead, is all pianissimo but a dead pianissimo, no life.

the constants in most competitors is:

.- boring as hell Nocturnes
.- Good to Great/Amazing Etudes
.- o.k Ballads/Scherzi, mostly great codas

So basically, terrific technicians but mediocre musicians. Isn't that the way it usually is, though? :p
