see the thing is that song has been on countless mixes for like the last year hell its even in a hummer commercial lets just put it this way its been heard and heard and heard again. Both of you are unoriginal.

Just because I have one semi-mainstream song on my mix means I'm unoriginal? I think it's a great song and it fits into both the theme and general flow of my mix, so why can't I use it?
Suerte and I are just messing around, it doesn't matter if both of our mixes have one common song.

With all this talk of mainstream songs and unoriginality, let's just say there's a reason my mix is named "Twisp and Catsby."

Ey, f-you buddy, we don't have hummer commercials in Scotland! IN SCOTLAND I AM ORIGINAL. K?!

Not saying the song is bad and unoriginal hell I love it death but what what I wanted to do was point out that its been done before and say both of you dont need to bicker over it. Though there are many Ratatat songs that are just as good may I suggest desert eagle or Germany to Germany. Didn't want to anger you all just throwing in my two cents isn't that what one does on a message board.

Relax chum, as DigDugDirkDiggler said, we were only having a "larf". As I just did with you.

...

But we really don't get hummer adverts in Scotland.

God, you write the worst run on sentences I have ever seen.

Alright, posting these links in a public forum probably isn't the best idea. Everyone who still wants to participate e-mail me (buddyc at gmail.com) and I'll work something out.

Suerte

Member
I'm going to operate a system of "you review mine (or say you'll review it) and I'll review yours".

Kthx.

Or is BuddyC going to put us into groups? SOMEONE STOP THE MADNESS.

BuddyC

Member
I'll be making groups if there's enough of a response. What'll probably happen is I'll compile a list of where to get the mixes and e-mail an updated list to everyone as they're posted. Then reviews can continue to be posted in this thread.

Be happy, they are incredably bad and I really don't agree with what hummer stands for.

here's my review of hotarubi's first disc, entitled "a cage for growing, nothing more"

the tracklist with my rambling comments on each song:

1) low - monkey: i liked the male/female vocal harmonies in this one, but found it a little slow and repetitive.
2) mirah - cold cold water: one of my favorite mirah songs on what i think is her best album, just a step above the lo fi of you think it's like this, and not quite c'mon miracle either. it's a great song.
3) andrew bird - a nervous tic motion of the head to the left: this guy sounds sort of like sondre lerche, and i like his voice...the whistling and strings remind me of a western. i like this song.
4) the microphones - i felt your shape: i don't really listen to the microphones all that much, but i find this song to be likeable and pleasant.
5) smog - vessel in vain: starts off real folky, slow, and sort of boring, then it improves. good guitar part, but i think the sound of the vocals is a little hard to listen to.
6) pyramid - monster in the canyon: i really love lap steel guitars. i think i'm going to buy one. i think without the lap steel i would find this song boring, but with it it's awesome. and then there's a bunch of horns!
7) yo la tengo - tom courtenay (georgia version): i don't listen to yo la tengo, but everytime i hear them i remind myself to do so more often, and then forget. i like this song. upbeat and sad at the same time.
8) crowded house - not the girl you think you are: cool song, cute lyrics. good melody. a lot of these songs on this mix have been sort of folk waltzy, and this is one of them.
9) sufjan stevens - come on! feel the illinoise!: as far as albums go, i think sufjan stevens' michigan album is far far superior to illinois, but this song is one of the gems of illinois. well actually there's a bunch of gems, but there's 20something songs on the album and they can't all be great, whereas michigan has like 10 songs and i like pretty much all of them. i'm rambling here, but i'll get to the point and say that this song is awesome.
10) the cure - close to me: i love this song. one of the best cure songs with the beat alone.
11) ambulance ltd - stay tuned: about here is where i notice that the mix is picking up the pace...it's sort of laid out like my mix, slow to fast. good harmonies in the vocals, catchy bassline, forgetable guitars. good song.
12) the raveonettes ft. ronnie spector - ode to l.a.: this song reminds me that i'm supposed to visit my older sister; i haven't seen her in awhile. for some reason i'm really biased towards female vocalists in rock songs, so was pretty much guaranteed to like this song. awesome chorus.
13) the rolling stones - 100 years ago: i can't believe the stones are still on tour. when i get old i have to hire whichever reanimator is in charge of their health. this song is pretty awesome, but i just find it funny that it's called 100 years ago and they're so old and still touring. anyways, it makes me want to break out my electric guitar until i remember it's still in my friend's basement.
14) four tet - iron man: this sort of seems out of place in a predominantly rock mix, but it's four tet with guitars or at least guitar samples...i don't really know, but i do know this song is very nice. relaxed but with a threatening sense in the background.
15) a gun called tension - electric chair: super simple beat with throbbing bass, and half spoken, half sung vocals. the mix is sort of dying down again into a nice, slow feel. this song was just ok to me though, it didn't really do all that much, but it serves its purpose to slow down the mix some more.
16) patrick wolf - this weather: piano with...a saw? at least it sounds like a saw. or some kind of motor...pretty melancholy, i like the piano part, the subtle strings, and what sort of sounds like a harpsichord at times. then it picks up with a throbbing techno kick beat. and it almost seems like the mix gives a last rise before it ends.
17) kaada and patton - seute: dark and brooding. i like dark and brooding if i'm in the mood for it, but right now i'm not. a little dramatic. i can sort of picture a really overdramatic interpretive dance to this song, i bet that would be a riot.
18) omar rodriguez lopez - here the tame go by: and we're back to the folk fingerpicked guitars and quiet, but then with interspersed electric bass and eventually a beat with amplifier sounds intermixed, like the mix is a dying animal trying to stand up again and rock the fuck out. hell there's even some wacky shredding, but it doesn't quite get the amp working again to full rock out capacity, and thus the mix ends.

overall: hotarubi has yet to make a mix that i didn't like as a whole, and this one is no exception; it's got an excellent flow to it, although it's a bit on the long side at 75 minutes. i think a few of the songs sort of detract from the overall feel of the mix, but the ultimate feeling is still well captured and evident. next up, hotarubi's more electronic mix, and hopefully i'll be able to write in coherent sentences.

Edit 2: can someone host this for me, please

I'll review if people review mine. See, this system isn't going to work out.

Just do it, dudes. Listening to music someone put together for you is hardly a job. You may find something you like. You know, maybe just talk about a couple of tracks you enjoyed/hated - that's all.

My mix is barely more than 55 minutes. Not that much of a sacrifice. I promise I'll get to some of yours by Friday.

Suerte's 12:00AM mix review

01. Every Move A Picture - On The Edge Of Something Beautiful (At 12:00AM) - this is a pretty good song, half dancy, half boring

02. Ratatat - Seventeen Years - GAF got me into this band a long long time ago, and although ive heard it many times, its just one of those songs that never gets old for me. considering that I usually dont listen to the type of music on your mix that often, this is the only song I have heard before on your mix.

03. Juliette And The Licks - You're Speaking My Language - This song reminds me a lot of peaches and iggy pop's "kick it" and thats a good thing.

04. The Brunettes - Loopy Loopy Love - This is a really fucking happy song. I like it.

05. The Information - Getting Even - The killers meets my chemical romance. continues the upbeat trend.

06. Kaiser Chiefs - Seventeen Cups - I rememer you whoring these guys out a while back...and while I havent heard much and what I have seemed fairly generic, this goes with the theme of the mix very well.

07. Clor - Love + Pain - eh, this song is average, but once again it goes with the flow nicely.

08. The Modern - Suburban Culture - sounds like a poppier faint or action action. I like synth pop and 80s, and this seems very inspired by both. so far this is my favorite song on the mix.

09. The Chalets - Love Punch - the mix went from more rock oriented to electro\ synth. I just recently made an electro cd the other day, and this song would have fit nicely on it. good choice.

10. Do Me Bad Things - Time For Deliverance - back to rock. I love the drum beat and the little guitar riff after the opening guitar stops, and the chorus is still pretty good...on my second listen the chorus grew on me. I like this song. third listen- this is a really catchy song.. another one of my favorites on the mix.

11. VHS or Beta - You Got Me - I've heard the name VHS or beta but id ever really listened to them. its a good follow up the do me bad things song.

12. Maximo Park - Once A Glimpse - this song makes me want to rock out and dance. at the same time. it reminds me of interpol and the killers.

13. The Cribs - Hey Scenesters! - another killers-esque song. its good.

14. Chin Up Chin Up - Why Is My Sleeping Bag A Ghetto Muppet? - this song is alright, but kind of boring...maybe it will grow on me.

15. Hal - I Sat Down - this was a good closer, another one of my favorites on the mix.

I wrote this review on the first listen, and then went back and listened to it again and changed things i felt different about. Overall the mix was upbeat and happy. lots of synth and rock and pop, and these three combined. and it makes me want to dance. overall, alot of it sounded the same and there wasnt 1 song that i really just loved , but there wasnt one song I really didnt like. I'd give it 8.2\10. it definetly gets better towards the end of the mix.

yoshifumi's rock mix spring 2005 review

01) keren ann - not going anywhere - her voice is beautiful, thats the thing that that first stuck out to me.. this is a very relaxing and comforting song, and every time I hear it, it gets better.

02) sufjan stevens - john wayne gacy jr - cant go wrong with the sufjan. Ive never heard this song though, but Its definetely some of his best work, and a great follow up track to the first song.

03) bright eyes - first day of my life - honestly if I saw coner oberst walking down the street, I'd probably walk up to him and kick all his teeth in. that being said, he can write some damn good lyrics. recently this girl who im sort of talking to has been posting the lyrics to this song on her livejournal, about me, so i may be slightly biased, because it makes me think of her, but a good song none the less.

04) emiliana torrini - heartstopper - haha, I can actually relate to this song alot as well. ive been driking and smoking WAY too much lately and not getting any sleep, and i do feel like im about to have a heart attack every once in a while. o_O but yeah this song is awesome too. so far excellent flow going on here

05) m. ward - helicopter - I love the way this song opens up, after torrini. m. ward roxx0rs. this song surely grew on me after multiple listens. very dylanish.

06) mirah - apples in the trees - so far the flow is perfect, youve really nailed that. I've heard this song before but I havent listened to it all that much, so it was a good choice..mirah is awesome as well.

07) beck - summer girl - ahh a change in pace\style; good timing with the placement on that. its summer, this is a fitting song for a summer time(err technically spring according to the topic) mix.

08) bloc party - like eating glass - I never actually got into this album when all the fuss was going around...I think maybe I heard a few songs once or twice but that was it. they are definetly talented and this song is pretty damn good. this was another song i had to give time to grow on me. sounds very killers\interpolish

09) dogs die in hot cars - lounger - I've heard a few songs by these guys.. "I love you cus i have to" is badass little pop song. they're pretty catchy, what can i say. this song is no exception. its dancy as well, I like it.

10) the rentals - barcelona - fuck yes, this is what im talking about, the motha fucking rentals. I can always jam out to this song and it puts me in a good mood.

11) anniversary - all things ordinairy - I can't lie, I have emo roots, so I'm a sucker for this type of music (not saying the anniversary is emo, just slightly similar),this is easily my favorite song on the latter half of the mix, these guys are awesome.

12) mogwai - i know who you are but who am i - at first this seemed out of place on the mix, but now i think it was a good choice as a closer.

I've actually been falling asleep to this mix for the past few days...the first 5 songs are so relaxing, but I do still listen to the mix when im awake. overall you have impeccable taste in music, I must say. the flow is near perfect. I noticed sort of an underlying summer theme (intentional or not i enjoyed it). great mix, sir! 9.5 \ 10

hotarubi's second disc, complicated shadows, is an electronic heavy mix that flows from song to song with neat crossfading that i like. i must admit, lately i've been into pretty poppy, dancy electronic music, so i'm a little unsure of how i'll rate this. i think this mix is good for reading to or working to.

the tracklist, with comments:

1) mazzy star vs. jarvis cocker - into u: awesome mashup by richard x (he's the genius behind girls on top, right? i think he is)...this song is absolutely beautiful. an awesome start.

2) depeche mode - little 15 (ulrich schnauss remix): i prefer depeche mode when they're at least a little bit poppier and upbeat, but i still think this song is pretty good. i'm not really familiar with the original so i really don't know what's changed by the remix. :/

3) dj food - the sky at night: brooding strings at the start, into...more slow, brooding strings. this is good sleep music.

4) shigeryu umebayashi - long journey: coming off the strings of the previous track, we get a nice cello and eerie bells. however, it's also pretty slow, and i'm reviewing this in the afternoon when i'd prefer to be up and dancing around.

5) m83 - car chase terror: i like m83's new album, but this song really, really weirds me out. creepy, but in a sort of good way. i wish i knew what the dialogue was from.

6) tujiko noriko - mugen kyuukou: after the frantic nature of the last track, the mix dives right back into slow territory. i sort of disliked this song.

7) plaid ft. bjork - lillith: anytime plaid does anything with bjork, whether it's remixing stuff or this, it generally turns out way better than anything bjork does on her own. this song is pretty solid. plaid makes some solid beats. the mix is picking up again.

8) mouse on mars - evoke an object: i like this song, especially the vocals, but it's just too long. other than that it would be an awesome song.

9) i'm not a gun - scenes of someone else: hey now here's some post-rock, explosions in the sky-esque music. bunch of guitars and drums, mellow, dreamy.

10) bloc party - so here we are (four tet remix): i like four tet, and i like bloc party to a slightly lesser extent, so there's nothing not to love here. an eerie start, and Kele Okereke's has such a neat voice.

11) brian eno - under stars II: another slow ambient piece, good for sleeping or reading to.

12) primal scream - give out but don't give up (portishead remix): threatening bells and some scratching, and a nice beat. and a wacky phaser effect the entire time.

13) tricky - pumpkin: a slow, sad, vocal track, occasionally intermixed with some angsty distorted guitars.

14) coil - love's secret domain: i didn't like this song one bit, because of the vocals mostly. half sung, half spoken, but pretty irritating in a trying to sound mysterious sort of way.

15) autechre - kalpol intro: can't go wrong with autechre (well as long as it's 1990s autechre). sort of epic, sort of ambient, sort of awesome.

16) the books - a little longing goes away: this song is hopeful and the last of the mix, like waking up from the slow grind of the previous songs. or maybe finally going to sleep. lost and safe is definitely my favorite books album, it flows together so well.

overall: i think i liked this mix less than hotarubi's other mix, but i'll admit that's partly because i wasn't in the mood for the type of slow ambience of most of the mix. i can definitely say i liked the flow of the mix, and it would be an excellent sleep mix or reading mix. but i'm writing this in the afternoon, and that's sort of a bad time for this sort of music. one of those things that goes best with certain moods.

If you like the new one and haven't checked his older stuff out, you must listen to The Swimming Hour. It's by Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire, which means there's a little difference in the songwriting, but the album is awesome.

a half-rockout, half-dance til you pass out feeling mix, the kind that gets you pumped. good workout music, i think i'll stick this on my ipod when i go to the gym tomorrow morning.

anyways, the tracklist with comments:

1) every move a picture - at the edge of something beautiful: hey this guy sort of sounds like the guy from bloc party, and i like that. i like the cool synth going in the background.

2) ratatat - seventeen years: by far the best song of of the ratatat album, which kind of sucks because it's the first song and the rest of the album, while still excellent, seems like crap in comparison.

3) juliette and the licks - you're speaking my language: i don't really like the vocals so much in this, but that's the only thing that's dragging it down for me.

4) the brunettes - loopy loopy love: starts with a nice asian-influenced guitar riff. sort of reminds me of mirah, and i love mirah, so i like this a lot. a very cute song.

5) the information - getting even: this song's a rocker for sure, but i'm not sure how i feel about it. i guess i'm sort of neutral on it, it just didn't do that much for me. i do like the synth in the background though.

6) kaiser chiefs - seventeen cups: a sort of surfer-rockish song, with nice vocal harmonies but other than that i found it sort of boring.

7) clor - love + pain: this song jumps all over the place, and obviously there are some likeable places and others that are sort of atonal and i don't really like them that much. but i do sort of like the song.

8) the modern - suburban culture: well... i feel obligated to dislike this song...but holy fucking shit i love this song. i repeated it about 4 times on the first listen. but i feel sort of guilty about it. this song alone probably makes up for any songs i disliked on this mix.

9) the chalets - love punch: i dig the minimal beat and bassline, but not the vocal style, except the female part, because it's funny.

10) do me bad things - time for deliverance: another rockout extravaganza at the start. if i had long hair i'd be headbanging, but right now i was just sort of holding up the devil horns pointed at my wall. and then the vocals are nice too. and then it turns not quite so rocking, but still pretty cool.

11) vhs or beta - you got me: cool song, i like the bass. hats are a little obtrusive and loud. but an awesome synthy poppy song.

12) maximo park - once a glimpse: starting with an eerie guitar riff, and then sort of not going anywhere.

13) the cribs - hey scenesters: "hey scenesters" repeated over and over again makes for a funny start. also i like the lead guitar. i like this song.

14) chin up chin up - why is my sleeping bag a ghetto muppet: i like chin up chin up's name as well as the title, sort of like don caballero and their always hysterical song titles. a sort of post-rockesque treat with vocals that aren't loud enough to do the song any damage.

15) hal - i sat down: i hear a banjo, so i am satisfied. great song.

overall: i think i like this mix a lot; it doesn't really have a noticeable direction that it goes in, but it's made up of what are basically all good songs, with the exception of a few that i find a little boring, despite their rockout nature. really though, you could've put suburban culture for all 15 tracks and i'd probably still enjoy the shit out of it.

Haha, I know some of The Modern, they just recently got signed so I'm looking forward to seeing what they come up with. Thanks for the reviews, I didn't really have a plan for an overall theme, but if I had to choose one I'd probably just say those are songs that I'd love to hear while I was out at a club or something, tracking the process of the night until it slows down at the end where I get home, sit down and pass out, haha. So deep. I'll try and get a few mixes reviewed tonight after work :)

enjoying the mixes so far, I'll have reviews done by sunday I hope. Just to let everyone know, my wife is due (as in baby due) any day now so if I get sidetracked and don't come back for a few days, that'll be why.

and now for two of the worst mixes you've ever heard: deleted yousendit links.

titled driving in driving rain, and it sort of is pretty good driving music, depending on the time of day i think...well parts of it for certain parts of the day. a good amount of variety in this mix, which is sort of both good and bad, but i'll get to that in a moment.

tracklist w/comments:

1) arab strap - islands: this song is slow and sort of sad, the mix sort of creeps up on you at the start. and it seems short and fleeting, despite the fact that it's almost 4 minutes long. it's a good intro for nighttime driving.

2) autechre - eutow: both autechre songs i've heard on these mixes are from their two best albums (incunabula and tri repetae ++), so i'm definitely not complaining about this choice. driving around to tri repetae ++ is awesome at night, this is a good song.

3) rick bain - orlando: now the mix turns a little bit rockin, but still in a trippy interesting sort of way. i like the instruments in this song, but the vocals not so much. but the rest of the song is solid, i'm just trying to ignore his voice.

4) iron and wine - freedom hangs like heaven: i like iron and wine a lot, their faster stuff slightly less, but still a lot. so this song is good.

5) the boy least likely to - be gentle with me: banjos, hooray! on first listen i didn't like these vocals so much, but i like them a lot now. made me want to break out my banjo but then i realize that i suck at playing it. the mix picks up pretty quick now.

6) weezer - freak me out: i really really really hate weezer's past 3 efforts, but this is one of the better songs from make believe i think, but it's still sad how pathetic it is compared to anything on blue or pinkerton or any of their b-sides.

7) rjd2 - making days longer: now the mix goes back to slower electronic stuff, i'm sort of conflicted on rjd2, but i do love the beat, so that's cool.

8) the silent league - breathe: this song sounded really familiar despite the fact that i've never heard it before, but i mean that in a good way. i like it, the subtle synth below the other instruments, and the vocals are soothing.

9) apostle of hustle - sleepwalking ballad: another song where i like the beat but i'm not as sure about the vocals. on one listen i've liked them, and another i didn't. this time i'm not sure what to think.

10) clouddead - rifle eyes: i liked this song, but i'm not really sure why. i don't even really like clouddead, but i like this song in this mix for some reason.

11) owen - skin and bones: this song sort of vaguely reminds me of somebody but i can't put my finger on who, but i like it, because of the nice delay echo on the guitars, the pace, and the vocals.

12) the magnetic fields - meaningless: sometimes i like the magnetic fields, sometimes not; right now i'm liking this song. a little repetitive, but short, so it's still nice to listen to.

13) fred eaglesmith - rainbow: folky vocals with a sort of synth beat, and i like it a lot.

14) all natural lemon and lime flavors - emergency turnoff: vocals remind me of kevin shields. nice synths throughout, neat little panning on the drums, i should've been listening to this on headphones.

15) why - sanddollars: i always mix up why and wheat, which is funny because they're completely different. this song is a fun ride.

16) ariel pink's haunted graffiti - for kate i wait: this sounds like i'm trying to listen to this through drinking glass through a wall, and it's kind of difficult. didn't like this one.

17) ween - if you could save yourself: so this is apparently the track that's messed up because it's the wrong version, but it's still a pretty good song, albeit hard to hear in this version.

18) john vanderslice - trance manual: john vanderslice has such a weird voice but i like the way it goes with his music. i don't really like much of him outside of cellar door and a few tracks from the life and death of an american four-tracker though. this song has some nice vocal harmonies, and a soothing beat.

19) the twilight singers - twilight: twilight looks really strange after you mess up typing it about 3 times. the mix is now back in full on slow ambient mode for the close. this is the song where you pull into home after the long drive and stumble into bed.

overall: i liked most of this mix quite a bit...however, the middle seemed like it sort of broke up the mix though. it reminds me of driving at night til dawn, then all through the day, and then pulling into your destination again the following night. i don't know if that was the intent, but the title made me think of driving a lot. overall i thought it flowed well until probably about the middle, but overall a bunch of good songs that are very listenable.

"driving in driving rain"

1. arab strap - "islands": Start the mix with some rain, nice. weird minimalism...kind of like it.

2. autechre- "eutow": has a u-ziq/orbital vibe to it, very interesting.

3. Rick bain and the genius position - "orlando": Nice transition from the previous song to this one. Good song, could listen to it alot. it has some weird skips, but maybe it was my encoder.

4. iron and wine - "freedom hangs like heaven": nice beginning, good melody

5. The boy least likely to - "be gentle with me": Interesting melody, kind of calm. Good build-up. definately a driving song, has you tapping your feet too.

6. weezer - "freak me out": Sounds like the theme to the Emergency Vets show on Animal Planet, but a good song once you get past that.

7. rjd2 - "making days longer": been waiting to hear some of this stuff. It's like a more mature Postal Service, I guess. very good.

8. the silent league - "breathe": not my cup of tea, but not a bad song.

9. apostle of hustle - "sleepwalking ballad": I like this one a lot.

10. cLOUDDEAD - "rifle eyes": Very interesting. played the song a few times, really like it, especially the intro - "It's all here". It certainly is, so many genres in one song.

11. owen - "skin and bones": Lyrics are slightly hackneyed, but they can't all be great. A good song otherwise.

12. magnetic fields - "meaningless": Swear I've heard this one before, was it on a soundtrack to a movie or television show?

13. fred eaglesmith- "rainbow": Sounds like a song from Napoleon Dynamite in the beginning, with the keyboards and stuff.

14. all natural lemon and lime flavors - "emergency turn off": this is the song that was corrupt, I couldn't get it to work at all. sorry.

15. why - "sandollars": he's not singing with the music, his tempo is off. Anyway, it's a def. Bloodhound Gang vibe here.

16. ariels pink haunted graffiti- "for kate i wait": 80's thing going on here, kind of weird but a good melody.

17. ween- "if you could save yourself (youd save us all)": Decent song, even if it is the "bad" version.

18. john vanderslice - "trance manual": very good song, fits the driving in rain motif well.

19. twilight singers- "twilight": Intersting song to end the mix with.

Overall, I liked pretty much the whole disc. I'm definately putting the tracks onto an MP3 disc for the car.

"The proper tracklist is included in a txt file."

that txt file was formatted so horribly...did you need the location of each song on your hard drive in the file?

01. David Byrne - His Wife Refused: hm, the song sounds so similar to a Talking Heads song with the way he's singing. (I know who he is, I'm just saying it's strangely similar in tone).

02. Os Mutantes -Quem Tem Medo de Brincar de Amor: Sounds so familar, yet I don't know why. good stuff.

03. Gorky's Zygotic Mynci - Blood Chant: Weird song. I like it, but it's weird.

04. The Wedding Present - Getting Nowhere Fast: I don't know about this one. I had to listen to it a few times to make it stick in my mind. I guess I like it, I just don't know why.

05. The Fall - Spoilt Victorian Child: Interesting guitar work, good song.

06. The Stone Roses - She Bangs the Drums: meh, decent but doesn't grab me.

07. Airport Girl - Power Yr Trip: again, not my thing but it's not bad.

08. Television Personalities - I Was a Mod Before You Was a Mod: interesting title. once again not really what I listen to, but it is a decent song.

09. The Auteurs - The Rubettes: better. I like the song for some reason.

10. Cocorosie - By Your Side: love the voice, great song. very minimalist, kind of a 20's or 30's vibe here.

11. Nico - Julius Caesar (Memento Hodie): very interesting. I've never heard of this band before, def. going to check them out.

12. Super Furry Animals - Gwreiddiau Dwfn (Peel Session): so these are the animals. love the intro, but the singing...oy. I suppose if gros on you though as the song is really good, especially near the end when it got great. Consider my interest piqued.

13. Mercury Rev - Snorry Mouth: I've heard this band before, I think in 98. It's a good song to end on. I even like the length, as the time is used perfectly for the song. It doensn't seem too long or too short, it's just right.

I am almost finished with the Sad Boys for Life review (the first song is so damn good, it's hard to listen to the rest of it), and after that is Suerte's mix and the three yoshifumi mixes.

star power's mix "sad boys for life" is pretty heavy on the electronic, and spanning a wide range of electronic stuff i guess. it's pretty cool.

tracklist w/ comments:

1) ultravox - vienna: i like the way it builds to the chorus with the piano. a little slow though, but still good. it's a good intro.

2) goldfrapp - utopia: i don't really like goldfrapp all that much. this song is ok. good vocals and bassline.

3) bjork - verandi: bjork is always pretty cool, i like the beat for this song.

4) m83 - don't save us from the flames: one of my favorite songs off of the new m83, this song is fantastic.

5) ellen allien - wish: so glitchy, so jumpy, awesome song. crazy germans.

6) nico - my only child: pretty much acapella, this sort of splits the mix up between first and second half. anyways i thought it was out of place.

7) saint etienne - goodnight: i love the way this opens with the vocal harmonies, and then i expect some sort of beat to kick in but it never happens. oh well, it was still pretty cool.

8) superpitcher - people: starts off cool, until i realize the vocals are so repetitive. but the beat is pretty neat.

9) dntel - (this is) the dream of evan and chan: this is probably one of, if not my favorite dntel and ben gibbard collaboration.

10) the normal - warm leatherette: ugh i couldn't stand this song. the beat is too sparse for the vocals, and i hated the vocals.

11) adult. - turn your back: there's only like 3 adult. songs i like, and this is not one of them.

12) radiohead - trans-atlantic drawl: this song is way too much noise and not depressing enough.

13) aphex twin - radiator: i didn't like this one, just because it's all atonal and repetitive.

14) black moth super rainbow - i think it's beautiful that you are 256 colors too: aside from the funny title, i thought this song had an excellent beat and ended the mix on a good note.

overall: i liked most of this mix, but there was a good stretch of 4 songs at the end that i didn't like very much. but it closed on a good song so as not to leave an unpleasant taste, but overall i'd say i liked the first half of the mix a lot better than the second half.

Hey guys, if you reviewed my mix could you send me a PM with the link to your mix, a couple of the links I've tried are dead and I'm in a bit of a rush tonight.

Also, if you still want to listen to my mix I've uploaded a copy to my own webspace, PM for the address if interested.

Thanks guys!

Rock Mix

1. Keren Ann - Not Going Anywhere: I'm writing this review at 2am, seems like the perfect time to listen to a song like this, very peaceful, nice vocals, hopefully it won't make me fall asleep before I review the rest of the mix ;)

2. Sufjan Stevens - John Wayne Gacy Jr: Another down tempo song, but again, really beautiful to listen to late at night with the lights out, I could imagine listening to this on my bed before I fell asleep, I love the mix of male vocals with female backing vocals, works well.

3. Bright Eyes - First Day of My Life: Continuing the down tempo theme, I've heard a lot about Bright Eyes before, a few of my friends are in love with his music but personally, I can't see what the fuss is about, I prefered the first two tracks.

4. Emiliani Torrini - Heartstopper: I quite like this, the vocals remind me of Metric slightly, another song I could probably listen to before I fell asleep, but starting to feel slightly more of the same as the first few tracks.

5. M.Ward - Helicopter: The tempo starts to rise, cool little track, a nice break from the previous down tempo tracks.

6. Mirah - Apples In The Trees: I like this track, but I found the vocals are kind of samey to the previous female vocal tracks on the mix.

7. Beck - Summer Girl: I thought the mix was taking an electro tone with the intro of this song, I've never really been a fan of Beck, this song dosen't really go anywhere or do much for me sadly, it'd probably be better if it was slightly shorter.

8. Bloc Party - Like Eating Glass: I'm a fan of the band and have seen them live a few times, so of course I was going to like this song, probably not one of my favourites of theirs but it fits in well with the rest of the mix I'd say, whilst providing a nice break from it at the same time... if that makes sense.

9. Dogs Die In Hot Cars - Lounger: If I remember rightly, I was the orignal pimper of this band on GAF, since they're from my home town. I fucking love this song, perfect Summer tune, probably my favourite song on the mix.

10. The Rentals - Barcelona: Nice synth on the go! I really like this song, since you can probably tell this is the kind of music I'm into at the moment with my own mix, definately my favourite song on the mix that I haven't heard before, like the mix of male and female vocals. Plus I've been to Barcelona, haha.

11. Anniversary - All Things Ordinary: The mix has gotten much better towards the end, probably because the past few tracks including this one are exactly the types of music that I would listen to. Synthy, up tempo, nice mix of male and female vocals again. This song could probably grow to become my favourite song on the mix actually. Excellent song.

12. Mogwai - I Know Who You Are But What Am I: This was an interesting track, a very fitting way to end the mix since it had flavours of the different directions this mix took, both down tempo and slightly up tempo synth at the same time. Nice.

Overall: I'm not a huge fan of down tempo songs, but there were a few on here that I really enjoyed, but of course, my favourite part of the mix was towards the end when the up tempo synthy rock took over, what I hadn't heard before I really enjoyed and what I had heard before, it was nice to hear again. Good stuff! :)

Electronic Mix

1. Annie - Chewing Gum (Mylo Remix): I really enjoy Mylo's work, I think he's from my home town as well, so that makes it even better, heh. I had heard the original version of this song on the tv a few months ago, but this remix seems to give it some more "credit" for some reason, very catchy, great start to mix.

2. Out Hud - How Long: The introduction was kind of misleading, but in a good way, the main part of the song is much better than the intro, it continues to improve, adding a few nice tricks as it goes on. Cool vocals too, this song will probably impress me the more I listen to it.

3. Bright Eyes - Arc of Time: I think I much prefer Bright Eye's electronic project to his other stuff, his voice seems suited to it slightly better IMO. Yeah... this is pretty cool, I could imagine it growing on me. I really like the backround beat too. Pretty nice actually, colour me impressed.

4. Styrofoam - Anything: Pretty nice song, although I found it a little dull compared to the previous songs, but only because they've been so good.

5. Fischerspooner - A Kick In The Teeth: I've heard a couple of Fischerspooner tracks in the past and they all sounded kind of similar, this isn't bad though, it's a nice late night song I guess.

6. M83 - Sitting: I've heard a few M83 songs before and I really loved this track, it's so quirky and sounds like it belongs in some crazy Japanese video game or anime for some reason, heh. I don't usually like music without vocals but I'll make an exception with this, great stuff.

7. Ratatat - Germany To Germany: It's a shame the rest of Ratatat's music pales in comparison to "Seventeen", this dosen't really do much for me to be honest.

8. Four Tet - Smile Around The Face: Kind of quirky, but again, I'm not really a huge fan of music without vocals, could have benefited from being a bit shorter.

9. Caribou - Yeti - Didn't really do much for me to be honest, didn't really like much about it.

10. The Books - An Owl With Knees: Really nice way to finish, great blend of down tempo rock and electronic music. Vocals could have been slightly better though.

Overall: This was the opposite to the rock mix in that most of my favourite songs were at the start of the mix, I think if you had joined the two of them together I would have been a very happy chap indeed, but it's all down to personal tastes I suppose, plus it wouldn't have flowed very well I guess, heh. Still, what I liked I loved so thanks for those songs!

Next up for review is Bowflex's mix, if he/she uploads theirs again ;)

Cosmic Bus

pristine morning snow
I'm going to take a cue from bell woods and stick to some notable spots on Yoshifumi's mixes, rather than droning on about track after track. There's a fair amount of music here that I've heard before, but that's all good. Yoshi's been consistently providing me with mixes in these exchanges and they've yet to let me down.

Yoshifumi's rock mix:

1. Keren Ann, "Not Going Anywhere"
2. Sufjan Stevens, "John Wayne Gacy Jr."
3. Bright Eyes, "First Day of My Life"
4. Emiliana Torrini, "Heartstopper"
5. M Ward, "Helicopter"
6. Mirah, "Apples In the Trees"
7. Beck, "Summer Girl"
8. Bloc Party, "Like Eating Glass"
9. Dogs Die In Hot Cars, "Lounger"
10. The Rentals, "Barcelona"
11. Anniversary, "All Things Ordinairy"
12. Mogwai, "I Know Who You Are but Who Am I"

I really like the string of laid back indie tunes that make up the first half of this mix. He and I had a remarkably similar layout for our first discs, which either makes me a little insecure or feel like I've got a weirdo psychic connection with Yoshi. The Keren Ann song is pretty cool; I've heard stuff about her before and had dismissed it for some reason or other. Now my interest has been piqued! I was also quite pleased to hear this Emiliana Torrini track, as I'd completely forgotten about her since "Dead Things" like, four years ago. Great, more to buy.

The second half picks up the pace with some bouncier, nice weather kind of songs. "Summer Girl" is cool with a way '80s vibe -- makes me think of Pong -- but it's also one of the two that I've heard from Guero before ("E-Pro" being the other) so that was a bit of a downer. I wanted to hear some other stuff in lieu of actually buying the CD! [/shame] I like "Lounger" too, because it's reminds me of Talking Heads except not as good, but that's okay. That Rentals track was a nice throwback; I always gravitated towards "Insomnia" and "Getting By" on the Seven More Minutes album, but this is slick. Like singing with your musically-inclined friends on the way home from a trip or something.

Overall: 4/5

Electronic mix:

1. Annie, "Chewing Gum" (Mylo remix)
2. Out Hud, "How Long"
3. Bright Eyes, "Arc of Time"
4. Styrofoam, "Anything"
5. Fischerspooner, "A Kick In the Teeth"
6. M83, "Sitting"
7. Ratatat, "Germany to Germany"
8. Four Tet, "Smile Around the Face"
9. Caribou, "Yeti"
10. The Books, "An Owl with Knees"

Electronic mix! I have trouble talking about this genre, never know quite what to say. I remember this Annie song from the last exchange, but the remix here is great, probably better than the original, though really, my memory's not so hot. I like it, period. Conner Obertssstst should probably stick with his folkier stuff if he wants the cash, but fuck the haters in the ear, Digital Ash kills and so does "Arc of Time" which is one of my favorites on there.

*** SIDEBAR: using two Bright Eyes songs on their genre-respective mix CDs was predictable but I nearly did it myself. DISMISSED. ***

Styrofoam is apparently another sappy side project with that bitch-rocket Gibbard, but oddly enough it doesn't nauseate me quite as much as the other trash he's involved with. Quite as much. I'll live. Hey, Ratatat! This is a cool song, most of what I've heard is, but seriously, it's no "Seventeen Years" overexposed Hummer theme or not. And I do have my issues with them, but we'll get to that later... Four Tet, Caribou, and the Books are fucking great, I lurv all three songs and all three albums. I almost used that same Tet song, which is just helping my psychic theory. Or do we both just read Fluxblog?

Overall: 3.82/5

(re)mix:mash

1. DJ BC, "Tripper Trouble"
2. Dizzee Rascal, "Fix Up" (Ratatat remix)
3. Partyben, "Another One Bites the Funk"
4. DJ Green Lantern, "Hey Ladies"
5. Evolution Control Committee, "Rebel Without a Pause"
6. Freelance Hellraiser, "Stroke of Genius"
7. Basement Clash, "Magnificent Romeo"
8. Freelance Hellraiser, "Smells Like Booty"
9. Partyben, "Drop It Like It's a Whole Lotta Love"
10. Her Space Holiday, "The Young Machines" (Album Leaf remix)
11. Girls On Top, "I Wanna Dance with Numbers"
12. Postal Service, "Such Great Heights" (John Tejada remix)
13. Annie, "Chewing Gum" (Mylo remix)
14. DJ Reset, "Frontin' On Debra"
15. Wax Audio, "Imagine This"

Unfortunately, there has to be a downside enventually, and Yoshi's mashup disc is it for me. It didn't help that this was coming near the end of my six-month mashup frenzy, so it's kind of getting stale at this point. Optimistic, though! "Tripper Trouble" is neat, and reminds me to check out the Beastles project sometime.

But wait: Holy shit, hold the phone, Ratatat's remix of Dizzee Rascal may be the worst thing I've heard all year, possibly next year as well. The two styles don't mix at all, and once saddled with these stretchy, sluggish beats, Dizzee's delivery comes off like a mutt that's been chained up and kicked in the gut. I hate you Ratatat for working this version and if Dizzee had anything to do with it in the way of approval or whatever, he should be slapped. I'm actually pissed now.

"Another One Bites the Funk" I do like, even if the pitch of Freddie Mercury's vocals sounds totally weirded out (was it always like this?!) and the next track was decent, too. Snapping back into hate mode, "Rebel Without a Pause" grates on my nerves sumpin' fierce (wtf is with that freakout game show music?).

I may have blacked out for several minutes around this time as I don't have much recollection of 6, 7, and 8. Oh ohh, "Magnificent Romeo" I think was good. We'll assume so. Anyway, I have fun with that Snoop/Led Zep mash and it had previously made appearances on two other mixes I made for people and work. "SnooooooooOOP!"

Something something Ben Gibbard shut up something Annie again! Fun! I wish I could be a sassy, likable slut/pop star, but not really. She does make it appealing, doesn't she? "Frontin' On Debra" goes against everything I believe in, since Beck's "Debra" is one of the best things ever created and Pharrell blows, but I know a girl who's going to love it. And finally, this George Bush songs is so so so wonderful and I also enjoy hearing Lennon really spit out the words "fuck" and "fuckers."

Overall: 2/5 but not in an entirely bad kind of way. Good effort!

:lol i think i'm at the start of my six month mashup frenzy if your psychic connection theory is true

edit: actually probably halfway through it

01. ultravox - vienna: good song to start with, like it a lot. I'm getting a Ewan McGregor channeling Queen vibe from the singing. Damn good song. had it on repeat for awhile last night too.

02. goldfrapp - utopia: nice song, like a quieter Bjork. and look who's next...

03. björk - verandi: not one of my favorite bjork songs, but it fits the mix well.

04. m83 - don't save us from the flames: I honestly don't know. It's a good song, if unmemorable.

05. ellen allien - wish: Nice beat to the song, I like it.

06. nico - my only child: weird, very minimalistic. love to hear your thoughts on the song.

07. saint etienne - goodnight: Does it speed up? It keeps trying to but then nothing...and then it ends. weird. (Sometimes you can tell when a song is getting close to the end, this one you can't and it just ends.)

08. superpitcher - people: this song and the previous go together well. good beat, but the lyrics are mildly repetitive. I get it, you don't need no people.

09. dntel - (this is) the dream of evan and chan: sounds like the guy from Postal Service? (And if the new thread on GAF is any indication it is) nice song, good stuff.

10. the normal - warm leatherette: had to finish listening just to see how many times they would repeat themselves. Quite a lot, it seems. oy. decent beat but...

11. adult. - turn your back: Interesting song, not bad. kind of a Devo-lite.

12. radiohead - trans-atlantic drawl: not the best radiohead song. it starts out good but kind of fizzles at the end.

13. aphex twin - radiator: softer than most of his stuff I've heard before, good mellow track.

14. black moth super rainbow - i think it's beautiful that you're 256 colours too: Has a Kid A/Amnesiac era Radiohead sound to it.

Overall the mix was pretty good. There were some high points (the first song kicking my ass was one of them) and the music was pretty good throughout.

Here's the tracklisting, I'm going to review it in chunks because thoughts were similar to a lot of the songs.

1. Cex - Hi Scores
2. Solvent - A Panel Of Experts
3. Julian Fane - Darknet
4. Diplo - Way More
5. edIT - Ltlp
6. Hint - Words To That Effect
7. FZV - Sells, Borrows
8. Prefuse 73 - Busy Signal
9. Boards Of Canada - Julie And Candy
10. Ratatat - Seventeen Years
11. Vector Lovers - Tokyo Glitterati
12. The Chemical Brothers - Got Glint?
13. DJ Krush - Jugoya
14. Boom Bip - U R Here
15. Bonobo - Turtle
16. Cex - Your Handwriting When You Were A Child In The Winter
17. Vector Lovers - Yamanote Sundown
18. M83 - Gone

The opening track suprised me...good thing I had headphones on. The next few tracks, specifically 2, 3, and 4, were remarkably similar. They were good songs, nice and mellow and rather easy to listen to. track 5 was about the same, but not as "easy" to listen to because of the breakbeats. 6 went back to easy, while 7 was very good, and a very catchy song. 8 was interesting because of what sounds like a beat-box and something like samples of a ping-pong ball being hit. 9 was maybe a little too mellow for me, though.

10 seems to be quite the popular song! so far I've had it on 3 diff. mixes, but that's not a bad thing, it's a great song. 11 was just ok, didn't really stick out for me. 12 wasn't that bad, but 13-18 were all kind of the same. The songs are pretty calm, and they go well with the previous ones as a kind of background noise, something to listen to while I'm working on something, not distracting but keeping the silence away.

overall a mellow mix, kind of something I can put in and forget about for an hour or so.

man, I miss the mix exchanges. That last mix I made and sent out before leavign was great, but now dated, I have no idea about the good music that has come out in the past year and a half.

12:00AM
01. Every Move A Picture - On The Edge Of Something Beautiful (At 12:00AM): not bad, good song to start with.

02. Ratatat - Seventeen Years: look! there is is again! :)

03. Juliette And The Licks - You're Speaking My Language: good, catchy song.

04. The Brunettes - Loopy Loopy Love: weird song, but I like it.

05. The Information - Getting Even: decent song, kind of a mix of styles. good stuff.

06. Kaiser Chiefs - Seventeen Cups: not bad. I've not heard their stuff before. it's pretty good.

07. Clor - Love + Pain: a pretty good song, if just a little out of my tastes.

08. The Modern - Suburban Culture: add me to the list of people who had it on repeat.

09. The Chalets - Love Punch: it sounds remarkably like Rock Lobster. decent song otherwise.

10. Do Me Bad Things - Time For Deliverance: kind of a funky song with some rock, pretty good song.

11. VHS or Beta - You Got Me: poppy, with an 80's feel to it.

12. Maximo Park - Once A Glimpse: I like the beginning, very nice. good song.

13. The Cribs - Hey Scenesters!: kind of repetitive, but not bad.

14. Chin Up Chin Up - Why Is My Sleeping Bag A Ghetto Muppet?: nice title. it's a good, if mellow, song.

15. Hal - I Sat Down: great song to end on. fits the mix very well, not only for the song but also as an ending track.

overall this was a good mix. No real drop-outs in the songs, they all flowed well and stuck to each other. good to listen to on my mp3 player as I'm walking around campus.

no reason you can't download (unless you're on some sort of dialup) some mixes and find out what you've missed

Yoshifumi's rock mix:

1. Keren Ann, "Not Going Anywhere": interesting song to end with, not bad.

2. Sufjan Stevens, "John Wayne Gacy Jr.": I can admit that I don't get it.

3. Bright Eyes, "First Day of My Life": same here.

4. Emiliana Torrini, "Heartstopper": I like her voice, it's a decent song.

5. M Ward, "Helicopter": interesting beat, not bad.

6. Mirah, "Apples In the Trees": I like her voice as well, pretty good song.

7. Beck, "Summer Girl": one of the first songs I heard from Guero. Great song - almost went on my mix until I saw this tracklisting.

8. Bloc Party, "Like Eating Glass": Not bad, decent enough tune.

9. Dogs Die In Hot Cars, "Lounger": lol...before too long I'll have the entire album from diff. mixes. I keep meaning to buy the album but I keep forgetting too.

10. The Rentals, "Barcelona": is this the same rentals that did Friends of P? it's kind of a fun song to listen to.

11. Anniversary, "All Things Ordinairy": much more rocking of a song than most here. I like this one a lot.

12. Mogwai, "I Know Who You Are but Who Am I" Actually a great song and excellent closing track. wonderful, I can't say enough about how much I like it.

Electronic mix:

1. Annie, "Chewing Gum" (Mylo remix): I like the original a lot better. It's a remix, and a pretty by-the-numbers one at that.

2. Out Hud, "How Long": not bad, much better.

3. Bright Eyes, "Arc of Time": so...he does a little bit of everything, eh?

4. Styrofoam, "Anything": Not bad, nice and poppy.

5. Fischerspooner, "A Kick In the Teeth": kind of meh, especially with a title like that vs. actual sound of song. what kick? from a butterfly?

6. M83, "Sitting": better, easy to listen to. also the third track from them in these mixes, I likey.

7. Ratatat, "Germany to Germany": I have to agree with everyone else - not nearly as good as the other song.

8. Four Tet, "Smile Around the Face": This ones pretty good, nice beat.

9. Caribou, "Yeti": not bad, thoug it kind of falls into the annoying/not annoying enough range of electronic music.

10. The Books, "An Owl with Knees": excellent song, very good track to end with.

(re)mix:mash

1. DJ BC, "Tripper Trouble": love this, the two songs go together very well.

2. Dizzee Rascal, "Fix Up" (Ratatat remix):
3. Partyben, "Another One Bites the Funk": heh, they go so well together.

4. DJ Green Lantern, "Hey Ladies": good mix, sounds great.

5. Evolution Control Committee, "Rebel Without a Pause": excellent, very good stuff.

6. Freelance Hellraiser, "Stroke of Genius": that's just funny.

7. Basement Clash, "Magnificent Romeo": pretty good, don't know either song though.

8. Freelance Hellraiser, "Smells Like Booty": smells like booty...lol. blasphemy though

9. Partyben, "Drop It Like It's a Whole Lotta Love": ooh...speaking of blasphemy! not a bad song, I just know some who would kill the person who would do such a thing to their beloved zepp.

10. Her Space Holiday, "The Young Machines" (Album Leaf remix): not bad, good remix.

11. Girls On Top, "I Wanna Dance with Numbers": haven't heard this song in years, decent mix.

12. Postal Service, "Such Great Heights" (John Tejada remix): good remix. I kind of like his voice, but only some of the time.

13. Annie, "Chewing Gum" (Mylo remix): same comments.

14. DJ Reset, "Frontin' On Debra": good combo, fits well.

15. Wax Audio, "Imagine This": that's just wrong!

I'd say it was about a 50/50 on the whole. lots of good tracks, but some that just didn't do it for me. like I said before, I just don't "get" sufjan stevens or bright eyes. I hear people on the board go crazy over their stuff, but I don't see why. For example, Hota says that Bright Eyes kills, but how? is it lyrically or musically? someone explain this, please.

and I think that's it for the mixes that were available digitally.
