The thing I don't get is, why didn't the Academy expand the Best Picture, Best Director and acting fields to ten nominees on a permanent basis, and quit it with the preferential bullshit?

It could have avoided all this.

Also, April Reign, the person who started the OscarsSoWhite shitstorm in the first place, is basically demanding that Birth of a Nation be coronated next year. I haven't seen it, but after looking up Nate Turner on Google... is it me, or is the subject matter at hand going to be a super hard sell on the voters?

You know, and I know, that the Academy voting block is going to look at anything else with a minority cast to shower with their mea culpa next year, because Birth of a Nation is going to be that hard of a sell. I'm calling it right now, I'm extremely confident on it, quote me this time next year. The Academy is desperate to head off April Reign at the pass, but they won't coronate Birth of a Nation to do so.

From the BP list, I've only seen The Revenant, Mad Max: Fury Road and Spotlight. Waiting for my The Martian Blu-ray, but it didn't turn up on Friday which sucked. Out of the ones I've seen, I'd place my vote for The Revenant since I truly loved that movie, despite some of its quite obvious shortcomings.

No, I agree with that one article that basically says who the hell cares that The Revenant was a torturous marathon. The mark of a good performance isn't how physically challenging the role was. That can be a factor, but it shouldn't be the main factor.

If Leo finally gets his Oscar, it'll encourage the stupid trend of conflating endurance with good acting—regardless of his performance's other merits.

To be fair I have both watched Steve Jobs and The Revenant and I have a hard time choosing between Fassbender or DiCaprio for Best Actor.

I wouldn't be surprised if the total oscar win will be going different than I am thinking it will go.

Here be my predictions. Some nominations I know and kinda went with my gut on them, while others I don't know and definitely went with my gut.

I have a feeling The Big Short will take Best Picture despite being the most underwhelming movie nominated for it. Something about how it's very much complete oscar bait by ticking all the requirements and it's admittedly clever use of meta "based on a true story" beats here and there has me thinking it'll go home with the big one. Even though I find the movie to be nothing special myself.

I'd like for Mad Max to win more but this the oscars, not the superbowl. So it won't matter much eitherway. It just would be nice to see a movie I loved like this, that's a rated R action flick of all things, honored at the biggest bourgeois party of the year.

I really like Leonardo Dicaprio and I know he went through literally hours and hours of makeup every day for his role, but part of me still wants him to not win just because I want him to win it for The Devil In The White City. I liked The Revenant well enough, but it's really not one of my favorites.

With that said, he really deserves any he gets at this point so best of luck to him. Maybe he can win one for both!

I guess making her look ugly is what won her an award, what would get Leo the award is "Man he ate raw bison liver" or "he filmed in the cold and probably got sick". I tend to not be a fan of that type of thing winning best acting awards, but it's the oscars so who cares? Either way, I think Leo might be in for another "upset". I can see Cranston taking it as the surprise of the night.
