I am also not a fan of Corgan, or even most of SP's stuff that I've heard (I own and heavily dislike Melon Collie), but I am constantly impressed by his ability to so polarize people, whether it's now with his self-righteous newspaper ads and solo albums or ten years ago in a (mostly fan-created, as I understand it) feud with Pavement.

Crazy.

I never understood why Billy Corgan got so much hate while the other equally as annoying whiners from the same era, Eddie Vedder and Kurt Cobain, continue to be celebrated.
Because he's a mainstream artist who demonstrates diversity in both music and lyrics throughout his discography that shows him to be an extremely talented and eclectic artist. That kind of stuff turns people off. On the other hand, Nirvana and Pearl Jam played more of the same. The Pumpkins (and Corgan) weren't afraid to do something else with the music. Some people say it sucks, but in reality it's just because it's not the traditional alternative rock sound that everyone loved them once play. Obviously, those who laugh at him for writing nothing but angsty teenie lyrics haven't heard much and really don't know what they're talking about; a lot of Corgan's lyrics are constantly compared to lyrical legends, in fact more increasingly I notice people saying he's like alt. rock's Bob Dylan.

I honestly think a lot of people are PISSED that Corgan gets so much acclaim, because deep down they're so jealous that one man is capabile of doing so much with his music in such an impressive amount of time. In 15 years, Billy Corgan has done more with his music than most artists or bands have in their lifetime. Laugh at me for saying this if you want. But I've seen people who hate Corgan's music throw hissy fits on other forums but basically admit this over the years.

By the way: Who said we're shoving Corgan news in your face? The discussion about the band getting back together is among fans who actually care (bell woods was nice enough to start a thread but not flame it). I'm not telling anyone that hates Corgan/SP to read these threads. In fact, I (and the many other fans on this board) wish you would just stay out. We're not telling you to read this stuff, so I don't want to hear "wah, wah, you're shoving this in my face!"

You're obviously an idiot now. Have you listened to a Pearl Jam album besides Ten?

Does anyone in their right mind want to listen to a Pearl Jam album besides Ten? :lol

Seriously though, I like Pearl Jam, but practically any '90s alt-rock band > Pearl Jam.

Not only that, but I think Nirvana showed great diversity in the small amount of time they were around. Who knows what they might be doing if he hadn't have offed himself.
Courtney, I mean :lol
Unplugged is amazing, and much different from something like Bleach.

I read the EW article where they interviewed Billy. He's a self centered, egotistical, whiney little bitch. Oh, and the Smashing Pumpkins were never that good to begin with.

The truth is, I have nothing against Billy Corgan or SP. I don't get off on bashing music others like no matter what my feeling are. However, in his zealous defense of All think BC, Diablos decided to drop in a cheap shot reagrding Pearl Jam and Nirvana. If you can't defend something you like without resorting to attacks on other bands you must be very insecure.

From Stephen Malkmus "Jo Jo's Jacket"

Bob Dylan sang in
"Its alright mama im only bleeding",
Everything from toy guns that spark to flesh colored Christs that glow in the dark
Its easy to see we got in too far and not much is really sacred.

... I cry when you compare Corgan to anything.

Hells yeah. PJ is the best Seattle band. I'm not dissing them so much as I'm saying they adopted a certain style and stuck with it. I really like Pearl Jam, though.

Koopa: Please. Malkmus can't write even decent lyrics for the life of him.
Billy Corgan's an amazing songwriter, a lot of his lyrics are gold.

are you on crack? Pearl Jam of the last 2 albums sounds nothing like PJ of Ten/VS which sounds fairly different of Pearl Jam of Vitalogy and no code.

*yawn* Pearl Jam never made something like Siamese Dream and then Adore.

ok guys, I'm done with this thread. Have fun ripping on Corgan and pretending I actually care.

The last thing I have to say in this thread is: get real. Seriously. Even someone in this thread that hates Corgan admitted he is impressed with his ability to polarize. If you just hated him like you did so many other musicians, you'd say little to nothing about it. But look at all of you flipping out over every little tidbit of Corgan's life lately. So like I said, jealousy rules the day here, and I'm sorry if Corgan gets to you that much. I mean, if he was so insignificant, why would you bother with this bullshit?

If you want to keep talking about Pearl Jam or something, PM me. I won't respond in this thread.

This thread is truly excellent thanks to Diablos. Rabid fans are the best!

I'll throw my 2 cents in and agree that Corgan is basically an annoyance. If he puts out great music with the SP name again, that's awesome. Assuming the rest of the band agrees to come back(and why you would agree to work with such a lunatic is beyond me.... cue the money hat) I can't see them staying together very long thanks to Corgan's brain damage.

Diablos pulls this stuff all the time. I bet 90% of his posts are mindless bashes at "indie rock", BC cock riding, or lyrics threads.

I don't credit BC with this shit. It's the fans that polarize people.

Ugh. Everyone who's not a Pumpkins fan says "I don't like them much, but that rat in a cage song is totally grouse!111" It's a good track though, the drumming is fucking nuts.

Billy Corgan's an amazing songwriter, a lot of his lyrics are gold.

I know you are aginst replying to anything with an intelectual subset but I digress.

Only fools think Corgan is a lyrical mastermind. And the only gold his lyrics can be compared to is:

1. The gold wrapped chocolate coins.
2. The gold you buy down at the Los Angeles Diamond District which has a tendency to turn your skin green.

I don't get why Diablos is saying that Corgan is diverse. And that we all admitted this either...

He hasn't branched out of rock. Am I missing something?

diablos is completely out of his fucking mind

corgan is not:

musically diverse
a particularly great writer (music or words)
a crucial and/or prolific hub in music history
sane

corgan is:

batshit insane
ridiculously egotistical
CO-producer of siamese dream, the only seminal album he's really been involved in
owner of a unique voice
fairly distinctive

i think SP had more musical value than pearl jam and eddie "please shoot me for birthing the guttural but sensitive male vox trend" vedder, but corgan was not the second coming in his prime and is DEFINITELY not the second coming now.

atrocity really describes him embarassingly well

My first Billy Corgan impressions was seeing him at a shitty club in Toledo back in 1990. He sounded awful live, but the band was great.

Fastforward to Lollapalooza (94?). They got to headline the show (replacing Nirvana). Not only was that a letdown, but the poor guys had to follow a shit-hot Beastie Boys set. So, Corgan launches into a droning ballad right off the bat and the amped crowd sort of groans through the song. After the song, (obviously some loud fan with a Ted Nugent shirt on) gets verbally assaulted by Corgan. "Ted Nugent sucks! What has Ted Nugent ever done for you? He's an asshole!" Too bad they were playing in Detroit, Michigan (Ted was born in Michigan)! Half the crowd starts booing through the next song, trying to pelt the stage with dirt clumps that the Beastie moshers had kicked up. Corgan then cuts the song short and says, "You assholes came for the hits, here's your fucking hits!" (Words to that effect). They then blister through "Today", "Rocket", and another Mtv hit (I forget now). After going through those songs in about 10 minutes he screams in the mic, "You fuckers can go home now!" Me and 70% of the crowd did just that. One of the wierdest concerts I have ever seen.

Name "any 90's rock band" that is better than Pearl Jam.

The list would be identical to the one I could give you by naming you "any 90's rock band that is better than SP" only it wouldn't contain Pearl Jam, and it would contain the SP.

I gave in and bought The Future Embrace over the weekend, I’ve listened to it twice and I’m not sure what I think of it. I really like DIA and the cover of To Love Somebody, but the rests reminds me of Adore/Machina-era demo material…

Typically it takes about four listens before I can get an accurate view of an album, so we’ll see…
