Deep into his 30th decade
I feel like if Gamer were made in the 80s starring Arnold it would be viewed as a classic. Felt like a real old school action movie to me, I loved it.

Oh, bitch bitch bitch.
If we are including anime it would be hard to keep The Sword of the Stranger off the list. Its action scenes are that good.

Total Recall. The movie gets a lot of shit mostly because it's called Total Recall, but I fucking loved every minute of it. Visual masterpiece [in terms of set design and CG], the story is actually solid and has Jessica Biel AND Kate Beckinsale.

Also: Oblivion. I really, REALLY love that one as well. And Mission Impossible 3.

The Raid: Redemption is tops. I loved The Raid 2 as well, but 1 blew me away when i first saw it, in a way that not very many action movies have.

Gamer is pretty good, I personally wouldn't rank it on a "best list" though. Gerard Butler is no Arnold.

Like what everyone said:
  • The Raid and the Raid 2
  • Ip Man 1 and 2
  • Bourne series
  • Outrage and Outrage Beyond
Be careful about Japanese action movies, while some are good (e.g. Beat Takeshi's, or Takashi Miike's), but most are very corny and exaggerated.

Also many korean movies have really good action scenes:
  • I Saw the Devil
  • A Bittersweet Life
  • Nowhere Man
  • Berlin File
  • The Suspect
  • Troublemaker

It counts. Fascist.

Every scene is perfectly crafted.

Not sure if it classifies as a western or action movie but The Good the Bad and the Weird has some of the most batshit insane (practical) action sequences I've ever seen.

There is a disturbing lack of DTV in here.

Blood and Bone
Undisputed 2 & 3
Universal Soldier: Regeneration
Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning
Ninja: Shadow of a Tear
The Tournament
Enemies Closer (mainly for Van Damme's villainous performance)

I think everyone has covered something that I'd consider a great recent action film...

MI series
Bourne 1-3
Cornetto Trilogy
Transporter trilogy
The Marvel series has its moments, obviously (but fuck Iron Man 3)
X-men films

Weirdly, looking at the above list, I don't think I'd consider Nolan's trilogy as action films; probably because there's so much more going on in the films. But I do consider Inception to be one, so that goes on the list too.

Just saw The Raid a couple of nights ago and I thought it was boring.

I can't really remember any great action movies for the 2000's. Maybe Kung Fu Hustle? I don't know, I guess I just like the movie cause of the comedy aspects rather than the action.

Edit: After reading through the thread, definitely liked Ong Bak 2 and Kill Bill. Those movies were a lot of fun.

ah yeah, The World's End. Those fight scenes are incredible, especially the physical comedy

I still need to see those Undisputed movies, I've heard good things. I enjoyed Ninja.

at last, for christ's sake
I'd also cite SH: Game of Shadows. It got fantastic action, Ritchie's visual style when it comes to it is incredible

of the 2000's?

what are we talking about? the century? or the millennium?

Unless you're able to recommend a good action movie coming out in 2978, I think we can safely focus on the movies released since 2000. You know, exactly like he says in the OP.

My vote goes to Dredd.

Still think it's one of the best Hollywood big budget action movies ever made.

I was going to say The Matrix, but it's been released in 1999.

The first Raid movie and Dredd are almost like the exact same film when you think about it.

But there are some pretty slim pickings for straight action movies over the last ten years, if you exclude all of the super hero comic book films.

They're almost like the exact same film when you don't think about it. Broad strokes they're the same movie not in detail.

I'd say the best action movie is Mission Impossible 3. Absolutely loved the movie.

Fist of Legend with Jet Li, but you have to really be into Kung-Fu movies because it hits so many tropes. Released way back in like 93, but I don't remember seeing it available here in the States until around 2001. I could be wrong.

I think Blade 2 is underrated. A classic sci-fi pure action movie that doesn't take itself seriously. Also Leonor Varela. Christ in heaven.

The first Underworld movie was good action, different for its time in terms of how the action scenes were shot and the European vibe to the film making.

The Bourne Identity. Classic.

Taken, Dredd, The Raid, Casino Royale, The Bourne Trilogy, and Captain America 2 all deserve nods.

The Matrix sequels get a little more flack than they deserve in my opinion. Matrix Reloaded's action sequences are top fucking notch.

Dat opening fight versus the Agents.
Dat Burly Brawl.
Dat chateu fight.
Dat highway scene.

I'm just going to echo everyone else and say The Raid 1 & 2.

Taken 1, X Men trilogy and Bourne Trilogy are good too.

I didn't really like Casino Royale or Dredd though.

The matrix copied a lot of action directly from fist of legend. Probably the same choreographer iirc.

Fist of legend is baws. Never been wowed by Asian action flicks till then until the raid came out. These two are so similar in terms of raw, fast, action scenes
