No love for District B13 and District 13: Ultimatum :'(

They both got incredible physical action scenes and tons of awesome parkour. Story is pretty dumb, but that's okay for this kind of action porn.

The Hunted with Tommy Lee Jones and Benicio Del Toro is really underrated. Enjoy the hell out of that whenever I catch it

Shooter and Jack Reacher are worth a look as well

The Raid 1/2
Dredd
Edge of Tomorrow
Captain America: Winter Soldier
The Bourne Ultimatum
Man of Steel
Fast & Furious 6
MI: Ghost Protocol
Wanted

Along with what other people have mentioned:

Just watched the trailer for this. I know what I'm watching tonight

Sounds like I should watch Dredd

You definitely should. It's pretty much a perfect film... there is nothing I would change about it. Also it doesn't suffer from being utterly forgettable or disposable like most other comic book hero action movies. It's got lasting power, which is becoming increasingly rare in that genre.

District B13
Ronin (made in 1998 but too good not to list)

And pretty much everything else that has been listed so far.

The Raid
The Raid: Redemption

A good action movie needs a lot of up close and personal combat that makes you say

during a decent portion of the movie. Accept no substitutes.

I wonder if all the folks mentioning Raid and Raid 2 have seen Merentau, cause that's basically Raid 0.5.

I personally haven't but it's on the list now. Same with John Wick after my roommate told me it's nothing but an homage to R-rated action movies from the late 80s/early 90s, complete with unending amounts of over the top violence.

I kind of love The Matrix: Reloaded. More recently? Many of Marvel's MCU efforts, including Winter Soldier, Avengers, and GOTG. But action wasn't what made GOTG great.

A lot of people have mentioned some of my top choices (Man From Nowhere, Bourne Trilogy) but I'd also throw in Shoot Em Up. It's like a cartoon with Clive Owen playing a real life Bugs Bunny and Paul Giamatti as Yosemite Sam. Also Monica Belluci is in this. Really fun in a ridiculous way.

Also if we're allowed to count animation I'd highly recommend Cowboy Bebop The Movie (aka Knockin' On Heaven's Door) and Sword Of The Stranger.

Since the OP was inspired by John Wick, and I just saw John Wick, I have to add it to the thread. It's violent, cool as shit, and easy to see action in every scene.

When there is gun play, it is efficient and brutal. Where there is karate, it is to the point and brutal. When there is MMA inspired fighting, it is on point and nasty. There is zero wasted motion in any of the action. Everything is done with intent, purpose, and efficiency. The action deserves and lives up to the R rating of the movie. It's the most bad ass main character in a major film in years. The action is really wonderful through out the whole movie.

Want to give a shoutout to Wanted.

I fucking loved that movie, dripping with style and I loved the breaking the fourth wall narrative. Shame the second one never came to be.

Honestly, after watching The Raid and The Raid 2, I've forgotten just about every other action movie that has come out in recent times. A lot of them seem exposed for being comedies hidden in action movie garments.

So, the answer is clearly simple. The Raid and The Raid 2 are action elite!

I keep going back and watching Wanted. Pretty great f'in movie.

My fav. probably has to go to the Bourne trilogy. Just awesome drama and action throughout the whole series.

There is only one! and is IP MAN! Seriously I thought Jet Li's Once Upon In China series was the best martial art movies ever made but IP MAN especially the first one was better on every level.

Ip Man 1, 2, and 3

The Man from Nowhere, I saw it in the summer of this year. The protag is fucking ruthless. Imo based on the trailers, The Equalizer (Denzel Washington) took cues from this movie and instead of a prostitute, it's an orphaned girl. But I don't think Denzel had to make any compromises with the bad guys in his movie, but in The Man from Nowhere, he had to blur the lines in the middle of the movie to save the girl, but it was very little of it.

Face/Off is the best action movie of every decade and every year. I don't care if it was '97.

For real, though, my favorite action movie for actual action is probably the Bourne Ultimatum. The cadence of the choreography, editing, and cinematography (i.e. shaky cam done right) are in perfect harmony even in the low-key sequences. I also legit love the writing in the trilogy.

For choreography: The Raid, Raid 2 for sure. The other 2 Bourne movies as well. Kill Bill 1 & 2. Probably plenty of Asian Cinema.

Set pieces: The Dark Knight and Inception are up there along with select parts from various superhero movies. Live Free or Die Hard. White House Down was a surprisingly great recent entry. Skyfall and Casino Royale. Lord of the Rings trilogy for the battle sequences. Select parts from Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy (and almost all of the first movie). Really glad to see the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly already mentioned.

Taken is just satisfying as all hell. I guess the editing is the best part? I can't really decide what stands out about it, but just the idea of a rampaging Liam Neeson is fun.

For sheer audacity: Fast Five and Furious Six.
