These are the best fan-made remasters i have played so far. They are so good, they even surpass the best official remasters of any other games IMO.

I wanted to make a thread about them but i decided to make it a poll as well.

Links and information for the projects:

GTA IV FusionFix
Nerrel's Majora's Mask HD Textures
Mario Kart 64 Reloaded
Resident Evil 4 HD Project
Silent Hill 2 Enhanced Edition
Sonic 3 AIR
KeeperFX (Dungeon Keeper)
Zelda: Link's Awakening DX HD

Feel free to mention any that i forgot.

I'd say source port of old games. They mostly focus on what matters and in some cases are good enough to spin standalone game communities of their own like gzdoom

OP, if you haven't, I'd also recommend to check out the Seamless HD projects for OG RE1, 2, 3.

Fantastic AI up-scaling on those 240p PS1 backgrounds.

Same for Moguri's Mod on FFIX.

Yeah i tried them. And i also tried the one for REmake on PC.

RE1 doesn't look that great IMO. RE2 and RE3 do look a lot better though. REmake looks great but there are a few blemishes.

Black Mesa
This is probably the correct answer.
But that's more a Remake and less a Remaster.

If you ever plan to replay re1, the PC version also has FMV mods which turn the 240p FMV into a pretty respectable DVD quality, if not Blu Ray quality:

The Mario 64 decompile project. Not exactly a remaster, but it was the catalyst for a lot of remasters, ports, and mods. Most notably native PC ports, an ongoing GBA port, and some really great visual mods like this one:

Yeah, i was thinking about adding this but didn't play enough to have a complete picture.

Zelda 2 enhanced PC edition.

Guy rebuilt the entire game in a new engine while maintaining the look and feel of the original. Fixes a lot of the issues with the game, adds some new mechanics and encounters, a NG+ with an all new ending sequence. Different soundtracks and sprites to choose from. Tops it off with a proper randomized mode with good options for challenge.

Absolutely RE4 HD Project. I followed them boys for probably ten years. They went above and beyond. Traveling around Europe trying to retrace Capcoms steps to locate the original sources to create high resolution assets. From cathedrals, castles, to random buildings on the outskirts of big cities/towns. They put in the work, and it paid off. Especially for Albert. He got recognised by the right people online, and ended up with a job at Nightdive shortly after the project finished.

There have been some awesome fan remasters, but I can't say I followed them like I did this one.

RE4HD, and it isn't even close. I'll tell you why.

When Capcom made RE4 they went to Spain (among other places) and took photos to either use as reference or to straight up adapt for textures.

The modder(s) for RE4 went out in Spain, found those same original things Capcom took photos of (even specific walls) and took new photos to adapt. This wasn't just a straight upscale, they made brand new textures from recreated source material. No other mod is putting that level of work in.

Either Albert's RE4 HD or the SH2 EE. I voted for Albert's mod because he did a ridiculous amount of extrapolation, eg taking some poor 2D texture and making a full 3D model from it, beautiful work.

SH2 EE has that added real time lighting which massively adds to the atmosphere of the game without altering the art direction too much. I was really blown away by those side by sides when I saw them.

TIFA VS SCARLET - FINAL FANTASY VII

The man who made this saw the ending battle of MSG4 and said: "Imagine this but even longer and with huge sweaty cannons".

It reminds me of Halo vs Metroid, exciting when you're a teenager certainly, cringingly awkward as an adult.

Its great if these kinds of things led to employment or at least kept them busy though, not knocking the work that went into them.

It's frankly fucking bonkers mate. Fun as hell following over the years.

Surprised Nintendo didn't shut it down, sue him, take his children and kill his dog.

You Tell Em Tv Land GIF by The Soul Man

Fuckin A, best goddamn mod ever made, by extremely far.

If you're getting back into Warcraft Reforged with the Re-Reforged campaigns, also check out the amazing high quality Warcraft 2 remake made with Reforged graphic.

I've heard about the Warcraft 2 campaign but i thought it's not compatible with the newest Reforged patch, or is it?

Not just remasters, I think it'll take the fans to restore dormant franchises....ie Deus Ex comes to mind, maybe even Full Throttle...and many others because the studio who COULD do something about it, don't have the bottle to...
