The Best Looking Console Game to Date

Horizon Forbidden West.

Hellblade 2 is not that great looking human characters are great, but, the art department was rubbish, I think Hellblade 1 had better landscapes. all those Ninja theory travels to get inspiration were for naught.

HFW probably, but the one that impressed me most while playing is Demon's Souls. Bluepoint having wasted 5 years doing gaas instead of releasing more singleplayer stuff on their engine is an insult to humanity.

Bluepoint working on a GaaS game was indeed a tragedy.

we played a different game then.
Sure, some scenes look bad but most of the game looks stunning and some cutscenes look like cgi
The only gameplay that look good are the setpieces that are mostly 1v1 fights on basic arenas. Regular gameplay and fields look generations old imo.
Sure, cutscenes are good but you're not actually playing that. And no, QTE don't count.

Coming from someone with a high-end PC, Demon's Souls on just the base PS5 is the best looking game I've seen in the past five years. Its art style helps a lot, I will admit.

There are few candidates, but this gen's The Order1886 is definitely Hellblade 2.
Ofc in the end it means nothing coz ppl will only remember one game from this gen even in 50 years, the benchmark for graphics fidelity, which obviously is:

We'll see what the finished product looks like.

By what most have been saying there wasn't 'gameplay' shown so technically we can't say that this is the best looking game to date when it ain't even out yet.

Some shots. I think it looks great but now to think of it.... I would say the environments in AC shadows look better. My other favs are Demons Souls, Dragons Dogma 2, FF XV, Hogwarts Legacy, Silent Hill 2 and of course WUKONG... probably the best looking game now to think of it again...

So yeah, it's probably AC shadows of wukong but I think FF16 is great looking... I would post FF XV and order 1886 shots too but these ps5 games look better all in all.

Wow. Admirable. I tried to replay it after finished just for the side missions and for the fuck sake if the stealth sessions were annoying. What exactly is it supposed to be funny for Kojima; I don't get it.
Demons Souls bro. Not death stranding,

Why doesn't it hit the criteria of being a video game? What criteria needs to be met for something to be called a video game according to you?
Because it has less gameplay than the first, what's there is idiotic and shallow, and it wants to label itself as an action game.

At least when you are buying a visual novel it tells you it's just that.

For all the walking simulator jokes and memes death stranding gets it at least has a bevy of gameplay, gunplay, vehicle etc.

This "game" is a tech demo.

I'm am full aware that there's a spectrum of video games where on the one hand you have games to try to deliver more of an experience and are more narrative driven, and on the other hand you have games that are (almost) pure gameplay focused. You, however, said that Hellblade 2 doesn't meet the criteria to be called a video game. And you didn't answer my question of what criteria a game needs to meet before being called a video game. I understand you might not like it, but it just seems so overly dismissive and factually wrong.

Hellblade 2
Or
Wukong on Pro

Vanishing of Ethan Carter.
Everyones Gone to the Rapture.
Gone Home.
What Remains of Edith Finch.
Every Point and Click adventure game.
?????

The first boss fight alone makes it an Action Adventure game....set the difficulty up and its decent fun.
Just because the isnt as much action as you arbitrarily constitute to make it an action adventure game, doesnt detract from the fact....fact that it is in fact a game.
If it makes you happy call it just an Adventure game then......but it would be an Adventure GAME.
If its interactive its a game, if Senua literally walked her self around and solved the puzzles solo, then went on to do the fights maybe you'd have a leg to stand on.

Saying a game isnt a game because you didnt get XYZ is stupid.
Anyone who was expecting Devil May Cry or Dark Souls when they bought Hellblade 2 needs to be checked.

The interiors look absolute garbage, genuinely ps3 level. The lightning, textures and materials are sooo poor in the interiors, it genuinely looks unfinished.
I agree in that the interiors don't look as polished as the open world. But considering the vast majority of the game isn't set in those areas I can easily overlook it.

How eloquent of you to use descriptors like "absolute garbage" and "PS3 levels", though. Very informative of your opinion.

That comment is just overly dismissive and factually wrong. Many people seem to like to exaggerate to convey their emotion towards something more than to communicate their opinions. I place such comments in the same category as "absolute garbage", "I loooove this", "this is the GOAT", "I'm literally crying right now", ":messenger_loudly_crying::messenger_loudly_crying::messenger_loudly_crying::messenger_loudly_crying:", etc; without any nuance.

Demons Souls is still the most "next gen" looking game.

I also love all the custom filters you can apply to alter the look. I'm surprised that isn't a more widespread feature with games.

I strangely will say Super Mario 3 for NES. It's is almost unbeliveable that Super Mario and Super Mario 3 are designed for the same hardware, with 3 years of difference, give or take.

star wars survivor looks like cgi in every cutscene. i rankj tht very highly as it looks like a mopvie, along with the order 1886

OP, I think you're more interested in resolution and frame rates than base graphics.

Also, its strange that the first souls game is currently the best looking one and will remain so for this generation.

Realistically Hellblade 2, artistically Tears of the Kingdom.

NOTE: this is a personal opinion, no need to attack me and call me retarded just because I didn't pick Last of Us 2 or whatever

Nah. I'm always a bigger proponent of art style myself. My list would be entirely different if it was just art. A game like Zelda ToTK is a disaster for resolution and frames and graphics but I love the use of color and design of the world plus characters.

These 3 games when they are on screen just make me go "wow" at what they are mustering on a console.

Warhammer 40k has SO many detailed not blurred out enemies on screen. Wonderful volumetric. Fantastic architecture.

Plus my choices on PC game would change my list of 3 also.

Funny how demons souls still the best looking ps5 games after 5 years. This console sucks shit.
I think it's more of a testament to their team and pushing the hardware with their engine.

Death stranding 2 is looking to be the next game to do that. I can't wait to see it on my pro.

Hard to argue with those putting Horizon FW on the top of their lists. Being able to play at 60+ fps on the Pro's Performance Mode with visuals surpassing most (if not all) console games in quality mode is unreal. It's made every other game I've played lackluster in comparison. Wish Decima's upscaling technology could be used by more studios because PSSR has been super disappointing so far.

On a technical level.
Forbidden West
Demon Souls
Hellblade 2

The actual best looking ones though, that's harder, there's been a lot I've really liked and it's hard to narrow it down
Elden Ring, Expedition 33, Unicorn Overlord, 13 Sentinels, Hi Fi Rush, Hogwarts Legacy, Tales of Arise, Forbidden West, Ghost of Tsushima , Wukong, Cyberpunk, Bloodborne, Rebirth, Gravity Rush 2, etc.

I would say Assassins Creed Shadows. Other games might do certain things better but it's the simulation aspects of Shadows that really puts it ahead. The hair physics, snow trails, destruction and especially weather effects add a dynamism to the game that you can't simply see in screenshots. You need to see it in motion to truly be sold.

The ray-traced GI works unbelievably well in wooded areas to create that sense of true darkness under the canopy. I've not seen that replicated in games so well. All four seasons are also handled beautifully. I have also been really impressed with just how detailed everything is up close, which can be studied via the photo mode. Just an astonishing level of care put into everything.

There are even some effects I picked up on that I don't think i've ever seen done before, like how the amount of light entering eyes changes their perceived color, or that glint in animals eyes at night being accurately reproduced at certain angles. It's absolutely insane at times.

1) AC Shadows
2) avatar
3) black myth
4) silent hill 2
5) star wars outlaws
6) alan wake 2
7) jedi survivor
8) hfw
9) starfield
10) demon souls

Hellblade 2 is number 0. Its the best looking thing ever created but i can understand people dismissing it as a non-game.

Starfield is really underrated visually. It's a beautiful game in many subtle ways. Not the biggest fan of the color grading in some areas like New Atlantis, but elsewhere like ship interiors, and combined with some of the best materials in gaming, it can look stupidly good.
