The biggest weakness with Steam & Steam Deck... downloads

Downloads fucking suck. You can't play games, you can't leave the device to sleep, you basically are forced to leave the screen on and let the thing slowly download the game

this would be less of a problem if there were a wired transfer function where you could go from PC to Deck (and vise versa) but no, there's only a wireless WIFI function for this (which is painfully slow as opposed to transferring files over USB) you just have to sit there and watch... as the system downloads... for up to 5 hours at a time. Imagine downloading RDR2 or GTA5 or Tekken 8 on this thing. It's hell! Especially when compared to consoles where you can download while in rest mode. Power is saved and you can do whatever you want while the console is doing it's thing.

It's understandable that you can't play games while downloading- this takes up CPU usage. But you can't even turn the console off while doing it, you either have to find a charging station or waste battery for a game. It's lame! Imagine this problem on the OLED models where burn-in is a concern, how do you do it?

I don't know about PS5, but on Xbox if you have a game active while something is downloading then it throttles the download to a fraction of the maximum speed. I stopped using the quick start mode that allows for downloads while it's asleep, after I read that it uses about £60 of electricity per year.

I am new to Xbox and this was the first thing I noticed. I kept wondering why games weren’t downloading. You have to leave it on the Home Screen or put it to sleep. It’s bizarre. The PS5 downloads perfectly fine at full speed while playing games.

I wonder if it is yet another legacy issue due to the original Xbox One digital implementation.

You can, there's literally an option called "Allow downloads during gameplay"
the thing slows to a crawl and even emulators start chugging when that happens though. UI starts freezing & becoming unresponsive. I know it's because downloading content and playing games at the same time is taxing for a portable gaming device to do but it's still a drawback to game downloads, anyways.

I mean sure but the biggest game I downloaded was Forza Horizon 4 of 50GB and it took like 30 mins with 80mbt. Theres people that have way faster speeds. I dont really find it a big deal as not all games are 100+ GB. I mean I got over 70 games on my SD. Its not the best but I wont die because I have to wait half an hour while watching some YT video.

Agreed this could have been a device killer for me. I have OK internet and I’ve connected my Deck to the 5G band on my router to minimalist the inconvenience. The bigger games I’ve downloaded (120gb) typically take about 30-40 minutes so not ideal but I can manage.

Trying to play Diablo IV on the deck is so frustrating with all the daily updates that game has, plus the way it patches takes forever.

?? Use an USB LAN adapter if download speeds are a problem and you can download stuff while playing just configuring on Steam downloads settings.

This doesn't happen here, maybe because I put a fast nvme.

Me me me me me me me me me me. Not everyone is you.

Not when you're downloading. Considering I have a Steam Deck OLED, it's a bit of a concern, too.

See Video, when plugged in I would have the screen timeout after 1 minute and turn off sleep mode. This should effectively allow you to download games whilst plugged in without worrying about burn-in on the screen, while you are away from the console. You can always go back and re-enable these options when the game you've downloaded is complete.

I'll keep that in mind, but it still feels like a workaround.

You CAN download while you play, but yeah they really need a low power state download while in sleep.

you can, but depending on how taxing the game is that you play it will start tanking performance and add stutters, because it will take up large amounts of memory and it will partially use rhe CPU to do so.

The only reason downloads suck is if your connection sucks of course download sucks if your connection sucks.
I feel as if you've only read the word 'download' and it has triggered you for some reason. That's not really what we're talking about. Point out to us on the doll where your 56k baud modem where it touched you.

Downloading from your PC/laptop over the local network is slow wireless because of whatever the slowest stretch of the network whether the PC,deck, or router. I have my PC connected to my router with an ethernet cable. When I want to transfer real fast to my Legion Go, I connect my Legion Go ethernet to the router and then I get the full gigabit transfer speed between desktop and Go

Speeds? What speeds do you have that OLED burn in would be an issue, I'm not even being sarcastic, you'd literally have to leave it for 6 months or longer on 24/7 to even begin to worry.
I've heard some tales about Steam Deck OLEDs having burn-in issues. I'd rather err on the side of caution. That message at the bottom of the screen that never seems to go away during downloads is my top concern.

You cannot burn in an OLED from downloading games, it's paranoia not caution.

2024, 2034, 2044, doesnt matter what year
wired transfer will ALWAYS be faster than wireless or Wi-Fi.
Depends on your connection and wifi chip. I have Wi-Fi 6 router + chip and it's indistinguishable, I get similar 950/950 wired or wireless, no point in me having a dedicated cable

At least steam doesnt take 10,000 years to download compared to the xbox app or epic store
It still has some of the most odd downloads I've experienced in similar stores that aren't limited by your actual internet connection. It's doing some heavy decompression at the same time as you download, so very rarely can I get 1GBps that is my speed, while my CPU is also screaming at 100% in the background and trying to play demanding games while also downloading at high speeds is a big no. Meanwhile on PSN I'm downloading with a steady 1GB while file sizes are also smaller most of the time and I don't think I've ever encountered any issues while also playing games. I don't know if on PS5 it's the decompression hardware doing its magic or Steam's solution is lacking, but the end result certainly doesn't feel very polished on my end. Maybe if I had a monster CPU.

Xbox sucked at that.

PS5 downloads full speed (1Gb/s) while gaming. Impressive stuff.
