speaking of Wii U, I've been playing that Xenoblade Chronicles X

I like it, but then again I liked the first one

this has more of an emphasis on customization, exploration and missions, with a lesser emphasis on the story

the scale is just ridiculous

I've been playing like 30 hours and I've only been to like... 1/5 of the land area in the game? Maybe less? I don't even have a mech yet.

XCX has its issues, but I find it better than the first XC when it comes to exploration and world building. I think I ended up with like 100-120 hours on it when I ended up finishing. And I haven't finished all the character affinity missions yet.

This is a correct opinion. XBX is less of a disappointment than XBC when you compare directly to XS3. I think my save was something like 200 hours.

Definitely feels that way if you do a bunch of side stuff along the way. It's not as bad if you're just focusing on advancing the story, but still can feel like a drag.

I can understand the thinking though - the sense of scale and exploration wouldn't feel as striking if you got the mech too soon, and you'd likely miss a lot of stuff you would have found on foot otherwise. A lot of the pop-in and asset load issues become a lot more prominent once you're in the mech as well.

That's a good thing, tbh. The game becomes dull as fuck once they come into play. XCX was legit going to be my GOTY 2015 before I discovered that the later chapters and continents completely revolved around the boring-ass mech combat.
