The 126th Wimbledon Championships - 25 June to 8 July

  • Welcome back to another year of that most mythical of tennis grand slams. Get comfortably seated and enjoy the white uniforms and classy profile thoroughly: Shortly after
the Championships the mad spectacle of the Summer Olympics will invade the All England Club -- yes, we'll get two major tennis tournaments on grass this year, and shockingly our
pure eyes will suffer the colorful national outfits allowed on the pristine grass. Not yet, though.

  • This thread should've been made by an Englishman, but Wes is too busy at the moment. Let's get this (dignified) party started.

Finally, some words of wisdom from that great British hero - Alan Partridge:

Watch a play by Shakespeare or go to a modern art gallery, and no one has the faintest idea what the hell is going on.

Sport, on the other hand, is straightforward. In badminton, if you win a rally, you get one point. In volleyball, if you win a rally, you get one point.
In tennis, if you win a rally, you get 15 points for the first or second rallies you’ve won in that game, or 10 for the third, with an indeterminate amount
assigned to the fourth rally other than the knowledge that the game is won, providing one player is two 10-point (or 15-point) segments clear of his opponent.
It’s clear and simple.

One last hurrah for St Kim? Perhaps. Doubt it, but she's a joker. I'd bet on Venus as far as unseeded players go.

c&p from RG thread:

Like I said in the official thread, I'm a bit bored with mens tennis right now.

Rooting for my fellow country men (Melzer, Haider Maurer, Paszek and Patricia Mayer) which all will f''k majestically, like always.

Since the prince of tennis isn't playing other dudes I'm rooting for are Young (lol, hes like 1-26 this year) Dolgopolov, Bellucci and of course Fedgod.

On the womens side I root for the same ladies as always (Kirilenko*, Masha, Cirstea, Lisicki, Cornet, Radwanska and Wozzy and whoever plays good tennis) and for some odd reason my hate for Serena has turned into admiration. God knows why.

*seen her live in action last year and my god she looks even ten times better when you're like a meter away, every dude on the court kept snapping like 10 pics per second it was hilarious.

oh and nice OP Peru :D

You have my blessing to ban anyone that is dissing womens tennis ;)

+ McHale and everyone else that is somewhat good and cute.

Gonna be crazy to see Wimbledon covered with eye blindingly colourful London 2012 branding next month. I'm assuming they'll relax all their rules about outfits as well?

I don't think I'll ever see a match of tennis as great as the 2008 final. My interest in the women's game has been picking up a little bit lately, especially since Sharapova rediscovered her game.

Was that the Roddick/Federer match?

That was absolutely epic.

Federer and Nadal can get the number 1 ranking, if these conditions are met:

1)Federer wins, and Djokovic loses in the SFs.
2) Nadal wins and Djokovic loses in the QFs (correct me if I am wrong)

Nadal has to outperform Federer in order to maintain his number 2 ranking.

And don't forget about the Olympics. Whoever wins Wimbledon will likely be the favorite.

Well I'll be rooting for RAFA! Federer has no chance anymore against either Nadal or Djoker.

And who the hell is Kvitova

I loves me some Wimbledon.

I wish all grand slams were white-attire only. If I were a pro tennis player, I'd wear nothing but white. It's so classy and cool.

And who the hell is Kvitova

if he plays his best on a surface he likes, he does. i really believe that. problem is, he isn't as consistent anymore. if he gets himself through to the SF anything can happen.

I also look forward to the papers here getting on a hype train behind Murray. The pattern usually goes with him being declared the Brit we can all get behind to, after he's lost, bemoaning the disappointing performance by a Scotsman.

Correct. From the ATP's website (last year's Wimbledon points removed):

Several scenarios are possible for all 3 guys. Such as

Djoker remains No. 1 if:
1. He at least makes the final
2. He makes the semi-final & Nadal beats Federer in the final

etc.

But Djoker secures his stay at No. 1 by making the final.

It still confounds me how Li Na became the highest-earning female athlete just by winning RG. But I guess China really gets behind those that make them look good.

Big country, lots of sponsors. If I was an ambitious Chinese dad/coach I'd pack away those table tennis paddles and drive the kids to a real court.

If Andy Murray wasn't dominating the irrational bets driven by nationalism and all that, what would his odds actually be?

How many international Chinese athletes are there? Especially female?

Li Na is my fav, when she's on, she's on. Definitely would like her to win Wimbledon and see her play on top for at least 2 more years

Holy crap Wimbledon is Monday, felt like the French just ended.
If you don't follow masters the schedule can indeed be irritating between AO and FO

1:20 sounds about right for a guy with no major. It's not like he's entering on a hot streak or anything. He was bounced in the first round of a grass tourney last week.

Crazy first rounds for the men indeed.

Radwanska NOT in the same half as Azarenka. Shock! Potential QFs Sharapova-Kerber, Radwanska-Stosur, Serena Williams-Petra Kvitova, Wozniacki-Azarenka

Man gets a nice big trophy and the Woman gets a big plate.

No one gets to keep either but the money makes up for that.
