An Oscar nom was small fry for Nolan, he wanted to take on the entire system. Now 10 films get nominated for best film

Whether or not that was Nolan's doing - 10 films being nominated for best pic is the worst thing about the Oscars (in recent years).

It feels out of place - you have 5 noms for everything and 10 for best film? what is worse that a lot of filler shit gets nominated when scaling down to five makes the best pic race more exclusive and as a result intense.

Spielberg was better than Scorsese last decade, is there seriously a debate as to whether he was better than Nolan too?

pfft. Oh and I'm pretty confident this will be better than Prometheus, despite me being more excited for that film.

Lindelof is trash.
You're fucking crazy. Aviator, The Departed, and Hugo shit all over Spielbergs shitty lack luster work from the past ten years.

Comparing the disappointments of AI, Minority Report, War of the Worlds, The Terminal, Catch Me If You Can, and Indiana Jones 4 to Scorsese or even Nolan's last decade of filmmaking?

This debate will take a while.

I'll give you a couple of those, but Minority Report and Catch Me If You Can are really excellent films, and War of the Worlds is pretty damn good too. From a directing standpoint, I'd put any of these 3 films on par with The Dark Knight, if not above it.

And anyway, The Dark Knight isn't even Nolan's best film, and that's coming from someone who thinks it's very good.

I'd say the Prestige is, but I'm curious to see if/how he will do the Howard Hughes film. If he ever.

Of course you j/o to Spielgs. Minority Report and Munich were his only worthwhile films in the 2000s. Scorcese has tremendous flicks like: Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed (my least favorite of his 00s work, granted) Shutter Island, and Hugo. You are crazy.

And for good measure:

Nolan: Memento, The Prestige, Inception, and all the Batman flicks so far. Two of those movies are better than Minority Report.

We could not have been watching the same movie.

Catch Me If You Can is great. AI is enjoyable in the right frame of mind. So is Minority Report and The Terminal.

Nolan was the best of the three last decade. Spielberg and Scorsese had like 2 worthwhile films each.
The only film of Scorsese's in the last 10 years that wasn't worthwhile was Shutter Island and even then it still was an enjoyable pulpy thriller. Scorsese is a god amongst men when it comes to directing. Nolan will never ever have as lasting of a legacy on on the art form as Scorsese did.

But that isn't fair, the 70's American New Wave is the gold standard of modern American cinema.

Pretty hard to compared them until Nolan has done a string of films after Batman. I still think that Memento is his best film and what he's done since revolves around similar themes. We don't really know how versatile he is yet.

They are all great directors who I wish would make a movie every year. The question I want answered is, who do you guys think is worse: Brett Ratner or McG....

I can say I somewhat enjoyed one or two Ratner movies. McG is god awful. It is hard to believe he fucked up Terminator that much.

What is the most resilient parasite?

AI bashing. Total hatred for every aspect of that film. Once you've read it, it's impossible to eradicate. It sticks, right in there somewhere.

Gangs of New York, aside from DDL, is pretty shitty. Shutter Island is awful. The Aviator and The Departed are the only two I think are good.
The Wrestler was robbed of an interesting plot.
I disagree. A father trying to reconnect with an estranged child is pretty fucking compelling, especially since The Ram is an awesome character.

Not a fan of Hugo? It is easily in the upper tier of Scorsese films.

Somebody fucked up

Chris Nolan Exits CAA; Will Follow Agent Dan Aloni Wherever He Goes

SHOCKER: Chris Nolan’s Agent Dan Aloni Fired From CAA

EXCLUSIVE: Chris Nolan has just left CAA, in the wake of the firing of Dan Aloni. A source close to the situation tells me that Nolan and his producer/wife Emma Thomas, will be going wherever Aloni lands. This makes Aloni a prime commodity in the marketplace, whether he goes to an agency like WME or becomes a manager. I broke the story earlier today when CAA abruptly fired Aloni, on the grounds that he didn’t mesh with the agency’s culture. Nolan directed the three Batman films as well as Inception. He also produced Superman film Man of Steel. He’s a billion dollar director that any agency would kill to represent.

I’d heard early today that while CAA tried to keep Nolan in the fold, the agency more or less expected this might happen. The agency is due about $12 million in commissions from past and upcoming film deals brokered for Nolan, which cushioned the blow somewhat. What a crazy development this has been. Nolan’s move underscores what I’ve heard about Aloni: he can be a prick with co-workers, but he kills for his clients and they are loyal in return. I’m waiting to see if Aloni’s other clients feel the same.

Maybe my newly formed GAF talent agency can lock him down, we work for cheap.

Munich, minority report, A.I, Catch Me If You Can and Tin Tin > Nolan's output alone.

Nolan does not have it in him to make something like Munich.

Whoa dere, we can all agree that Tintin's got Nolan (and just about everyone else) by the balls when it comes to visual camera movement and action sequences, but to say it has a more lasting narrative or emotional impact on the viewer than Memento is something that you may need to discuss with your psychiatrist.

Scorsese >> Nolan > Spielberg

Nolan has a much shorter resume, of course, so Spielberg in that sense deserves more respect for continuing to create great films over decades.

All three are wonderful directors.

That's why I can't stand any thread about Chris Nolan on NeoGAF.

Are you kidding me with that contrarian shit? Tin Tin better than The Dark Knight..better than Memento? That's dumbfounding. Better for who? You? How are the they even comparable?

At least with Munich, you're dealing with films that have some comparable footing.

I'm fuckin' serious. You're a nice guy. You're a nice guy. But that don't fuckin' cut it when you're bullshittin' and fuckin' around like this ITT.

Tin Tin is not better than Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Memento, and The Prestige. Nolan's weakest movie is Inception, a pretty good movie. Think about that.
