Now that I'm home, we can do this properly.

What I said was that those five films are better than Nolan's output for the past decade. I was not saying that every one of those films is better than every one of Nolan's.

Inception is not Nolan's weakest. His weakest is Insomnia (if we're not including following). Tintin is better than both of those.

I'm saying that those five are stronger overall than Nolan's best five. And they are only from the Berg's last decade.

Nolan is indeed one of the better modern filmmakers. But there are plenty that give him a good run for his money. Danny Boyle and David Fincher above Nolman.

What scares me is that I'm getting the impression that some of you consider Nolan's filmography to rival Spielberg's entire filmography. But on GAF, anything is possible I suppose.

Definitely prefer Nolan's output to Fincher's. I find his movies to be more intriguing thematically.

And Nolan doesn't have a complete stinker like Panic Room on his recent resume.

I like Tintin and all...but sometimes you should accept the fact that maybe you are wrong. that is just...WRONG.

Well, you heard it hear first folks.

Tintin's a better film than Inception.

Don't see how that is a shocker. Both have paper thin characters and plot contrivances, but at least Tintin features two excellent action setpieces.

Nanananananananana thread derailed!

I love how when you find a flaw in a movie it completely overrides your ability to see anything else good about it.

Not true. I think it's well acted, has a great score and has nice production values. But the script and characters are weak and Nolan's action is as bland and sterile as ever.

You are judging the films wayyyy to technically.
I agree about the action scenes, but at least Inception has an interesting protagonist with a satisfying character arc.

Also, unlike tin tin, which is basically an action romp and feels like a big budget version of the animated series - Inception has an ambitious script (which does falter). On purely artistic merit, Inception is trying to do more and faltering than tin tin - which besides having good setpeices - is fairly forgettable.

Solo my man, Im not sure if your argument is genuine or stealth Nolan trolling just for lulz.

i prefer shutter island i mean decaprio basically plays the same role in both films but its way better written in shutter island

Yeah, a lot of exposition.

Exposition is a crucial element of world building, especially in a philosophical high-concept film like Inception. The flaw is not that "it's there", or that "it's heavy", but whether it's effectively delivered, and justified by where the narrative takes the audience in the end.

I won't troll Solo out of some misplaced sense of self-righteousness. And he won't troll me because I'm just too much fun.

A film shouldn't be judged on what it tries to do. It should be judged on what it does. And for the record, PD started the whole Spielberg v Nolan debate. I was more than willing to take his troll bait, however.

I like Inception, but I do think it's unnecessarily complex. And it's not like I didn't understand it either. It feels like half of the run-time is just explaining how the movie works. Dialogues and entire characters are set up "because they have to be there" when, if they had just made the rules of the dream world simpler, they would have freed up a lot of time to explore the character arcs and implications of such a world.

No word yet. Probably attached to Dark Shadows in May.

If I remember the release of the trailers of TDK correctly, trailer #2 was attached/timed with 10,000BC which came out in March right?

So since they have been following the exact same promotional timeline (minus the viral stuff) it would make sense for trailer #2 to come out soon.

Yeah, but they'll probably wait closer to The Avengers release--and may even wait until after it passes--before releasing another trailer. They didn't have that kind of competition back in '08, when Iron Man was still an unproven franchise.

I hate to get drawn into another Inception debate but I will profess my love for it. For the life of me I can't agree or see how people find the first hour boring or the exposition unnecessary. To me a lot of the arguments brought against it never manifested while I watched it twice in the movie theater (both before and after reading all the complaints I find commonly on GAF) and then when I watched it again at home.

I think Inception is brilliant and even better than both BB and TDK. I have a special place in my heart for BB/TDK simply cause I love Batman but in terms of overall movies I think Inception and Prestige are his best works. I don't think I ever had a more enjoyable time at the movies since the very first movie I watched as a kid (Jurassic Park).

Avengers is when? May? That might be too late for trailer #2.

I guess sometime late March (Hunger Games) or whatever big studio early summer movie comes out in April.

I'd love it for it to be Hunger Games. I just finished the books and can't wait for that movie so it would be the perfect icing on the cake.

Memento will forever be my #1 Nolan movie. Everything follows afterward.

I don't think it's boring or even unnecessary per se. It was necessary for the story they were trying to tell. But I question whether that was a wise decision to tell such a complicated, rule-based story in a film format when something simpler would have done the same thing but freed them up more.

I feel like Inception's potential is squandered because there's more that could have been said and explored, but can't, because they have to work within the limits of 2 hours. Maybe it's an issue of expectations versus reality, because I've enjoyed it more on subsequent viewings.

And, while I don't often agree with Solo's views on Nolan, I do agree that some of the action scenes in Inception are poorly constructed. The snowmobile chase, specifically, where it's difficult to tell who's who and what is going on in relation to what. Zero gravity hall fight is cool though.
