Those aren't great Batman stories like the ones he listed, but yeah, they might be required reading for TDKR.

Ape Gone Insane, you got what I would consider the top-tiers, so here's some stuff you might want to read just to stay up to date on what's been going on in the Bat-verse:

- Battle for the Cowl
- The Return of Bruce Wayne
- Batman and Robin (2009-2011)
- Batman Incorporated

I'm guessing, since the above is just my opinion and I've never really been involved in any BB/TDK debate on GAF, but the reason BB is better regarded on GAF could be because it's a better Batman movie. It focuses on Bruce as a character and follows him and builds him up in a way TDK didn't, because it was distracted with showing off how kookoo for cocoa puffs Joker was. It was also basically a crime drama.

It is for this reason I'm really looking forward to TDKR, which seems to put the focus squarely back on Bruce and Batman.

It's not a better Batman story, though. He just has more screentime in it. Begins is just a fucking origin story. All it does is establish his character (again: splitting hairs, one of my favourite films, etc.). It's not like we came out with any new insights about Batman. In The Dark Knight I would argue that we did. He may have less screen time in the sequel, but that's because his arc depends upon the rise and fall of Harvey Dent and the chaos of the Joker. His growth through his relationships with these characters is dependent upon Dent and Joker actually representing some sort of philosophy. Yes, that requires more screen time, but fortunately it's a long film that no longer has to deal with Batman's origin. It's also worth noting that many of Batman's greatest stories are crime sagas, so I don't know why the genre can be used against the film so matter-of-factly.

The end of Batman Begins sort of felt like a "now what?". Things were going to get worse before they got better, and Batman would have to live up to his promise. In response, TDK tried to give us a genuine ensemble crime epic. It even went back and redrew some of Begins' themes. For example, when the Joker proves that Batman's evolution as a symbol is incomplete after he chooses to save Rachel (what Bruce wanted) over Dent (what the city needed). It's great stuff that challenges the idea of Batman; at least it did for me.

In 20 years or so, I think BB and TDK will be held similarly to Star Wars and Empire. Some might prefer the original, but the sequel will be where it's at. Erm..hopefully TDKR doesn't finish off that analogy by pulling a RotJ.
