I didn't notice the transition in theaters or at home. I was actually trying to look for them when watching earlier today, but I got so involved in the movie that I completely forgot.

You'd have seen the same thing happen if you had seen it at an IMAX theater.

bars = normal theater ratio
no bars = (cropped) IMAX ratio

You're getting more picture with no bars.

According to the article I linked to, that was more than double the best one day figures of the previous fastest selling bluray. So I'd say that's pretty good.

The Dark Knight has broken the record for the most Blu-rays sold in just one day of release.

The Dark Knight sold over 600,000 copies on Tuesday alone, while the previous record holder, Paramount’s Iron Man, sold 400,000 Blu-ray copies in one week.

And guess how many copies the film sold on old school DVD? Would you believe 3 million? 7 million copies are expect to be sold by weeks end, making it the best selling release of the year. If I were to guestimate, I would say that the release will have made over $175-$200 million by weeks end.

It took Shrek over four weeks to sell 5.5 million copies on DVD in 2001. The bestselling DVD of last year was Transformers, selling 13.74 million units over the span of two and a half months. Pixar’s Finding Nemo remains the best selling DVD of all time with over 30 million units sold as of last year.

picked up the sexy steelbook at FYE today ($29, but it was worth it), but i stopped by Target on the way home and Dark Knight was COMPLETELY sold out. All they had was a few of the BluRay/Batpod SE's up front, but the actual DVD/BluRay shelf was completely empty. Even the fullscreens! I'd never seen that before at a big box store.

I think you got it wrong.
Stepping into the machine causes a duplicate to be spawned, you stay where you are. Hence him killing himself. Technically, he's killing himself either way.

Edit: IMDB says we're both wrong.
He never knew if he would be the Prestige or the man in the box.

wow, just wow. Time magazine better do a best selling dvd/blu-ray of the year that fanboy that left out the Dark knight before will have to include the movie for best selling dvd/blu-ray.

Anyone have a gif of the Joker in front of the burning money saying "everything burns" I love that one.

Yeah I always assumed it was as Wikipedia tells it. It makes the most sense that way.

God I loved that movie.

Its impossible to know which version was real, and its not an important question to begin with. Either the machine creates a duplicate outside the machine or "teleports" the original and creates a duplicate in its place. Whenever Angier stepped into the machine he had no idea if he would drown or not, and he actually says so at the end.

Tesla was trying to create a teleporting machine, so either he suceeded and a glitch in his design was leaving a duplicate in its stead, or he created a duplication machine by chance that left the original right where it was.

But thinking of them as clones is a poor interpretation of the movie. When Angier asks Tesla which hat was his among the sea of hats, he replied "they are all your hats, Mr. Angier". In terms of physics he seems to be saying that both the stationary and the moved versions of the hat have been realised at the same time: so there is no "clone", they are both the original hat to begin with.

We already know that; in the near future, he wants to do a an entire film in it, except for long dialogue scenes because the cameras are too loud.

Not like that matters. Even scenes like this are usually looped in post production nowadays anyways.

EDIT: Ive been saying for months that TDK would get a Best Supporting Actor nom at the Oscars, and some technical noms, and thats about it. Well, the Golden Globe nominees were just announced, and the Oscar nominees often mirror them closely, and it was as I predicted - a nom for Ledger, and nothing else. Ill hardly say that this is the definitive proof that it wont get more nominations at the Oscars, but its definitely a sign.

The 2-disc set is almost a rip-off. You can get through the new stuff on disc 2 in less than a hour. In other words, stick with the cheaper version.
 
Got the Blu ray on Tuesday and I was shocked at how good this movie was. Whenever I see these insane budgets these days of $200 million for action and comic book movies in the summer I always wonder what the fuck they did with the money. With Batman it doesn't seem possible that Nolan and co. could cram that much awesomeness into the 3 hours for any sum of money.

Somethings I noted, the music is particularly awesome on BR. It stood out to me even moreso than the quality of the picture (which is also stunning). All of the dialgue is easily understood as well, which is often a pet peeve of mine with dvd and BR of action movies where the sound and effects and way too loud and you have to turn up the volume to 11 (on a scale of 1-10) to hear the dialogue properly.

And Heath Ledger was even better than I remembered.

Yeah, the bonus disc is pretty disappointing -- especially considering the considerable amount of bonus features BB had, TDK comes up pretty short. The "Psychology of Batman" doc is pretty interesting, and.... that's it.

Sadly WB is going to double-dip, triple-dip, etc the hell out of this movie.

Yeah, the 2 disc isn't good at all. I've seen both those documentaries before. Somewhere on TV, but I have seen them before.

But since the 2nd disc comes with Blu Ray version anyway, oh well.
