If anyone wants a code for the Darkness comics that comes inside the case in the Limited Edition let me know, I definitely won't redeem it. First quote gets it.

I assume I'm still the first to quote you, I'll take them if you don't want them.

SO for someone who loved The Darkness 1 atmosphere and story but hated the gameplay, should I buy the Darkness 2 ? Seeing videos of the game I feel like they sacrificed the atmosphere for the gameplay.

YES! You do still have the mansion as your hub, and there are some crazy moments in the story. Enough "did they really just do that?!" moments to compare with the first game, and I got choked up a few times. I didn't mind the lack of the non-linear stuff because it then took me months to finish the first game because of the not-so-great gameplay.

Brian Bloom (Kane from Kane and Lynch!) fucking nails it, I think he has a more varied performance as Jackie compared to Kirk in the first game where he's stuck in that one grizzled tone.

This game was great fun. Very solid game. Interesting story, fun characters, serviceable gameplay.

Felt like a great B level game.

It is by no means scientific, but whenever I see a thread crawl like this I can only assume that the game is going to do pretty poorly sales wise. Kind of a bummer if so; I'd like The Darkness 3 down the line.

OMG I love this game. Everything about it has been awesome so far (about 2 hours in). It's a tragedy the thread doesn't have more replies and the game didn't have much hype because it deserves it. Some things I like:

* First of all the graphics are gorgeous. I do remember reading some replies (maybe in the demo thread) about them being bad but you're blind if you think that. The art style is so good and the textures are awesome. TD2 has the best 'comic' look ever, way better than Borderlands. The gibs are a thing of beauty too

* Voice acting! Wow, I rarely notice good voice acting in games because I think I've become accustomed to it being crappy or average so it's made me numb to it but the VA is so good here. Jackie's awesome, his crew and their Italian accents are perfect, Johnny Powell the crazy guy from the intro video was really good, and of course the darkness voice rocks. What a great job here.

* Combat is very fun! The shooting mechanics feel pretty satisfying and fun to use. It's standard affair but it's well done and polished. And of course the darkness arms and accompanying abilities are lots of fun.

* The upgrade system looks pretty deep with a lot of upgrades and with new game+ you get to keep the ones you get the first time through and then can get em all the second play through.

* The story actually has me hooked, wtf? I didn't expect that. I'm eager to find out what happens next. The production values (presentation, voice acting, graphics and all that stuff) help you get immersed into the world which makes the story even better.

This game was well worth the measly 40 bucks I spent on it and I haven't even touched the online co-op yet. Please give it a chance if you like shooters with good story, combat, graphics, voice acting, everything. I just have this feeling that it will be a big bomb and not even chart. It is not a B level game. This is definitely an A game and one of the better FPS campaigns this gen.

My thoughts as well. Last post was on the 15th wtf. Let's hope we're both wrong.

edit, I also remember seeing tv commercials for the game so they probably put a good amount of money behind it and the marketing. I really hope it at least breaks even.

Alright! I totally finished my first playthrough on Normal, 8 or so hours!

I did love it. I had been avoiding this thread because I wanted to dedicate a lot of attention to finishing the game, and exploring all of it. I loved the art style. The voice acting by Brian Bloom really was incredible- hell, most of the voice acting was legit. I really enjoyed pressing the X button to hear random tidibits of conversation from everyone- Dolfo is fucking mental!

The story- well, the first game has this beat. For sure. It's strange too, because the relationship with Jenny is so much better developed this time. The Brotherhood made for insanely frantic fights, but Victor is no Paulie. I must say that the characterization of the Darkling is hilariously awesome. I'm an avid reader of older Darkness stuff, and they nailed it. But Aunt Sarah, is just strangely antagonistic- this is not how she was ever portrayed. It was off putting- her quest for vengeance, telling me to get over Jenny, etc. No way!

The quad-wielding mechanic was glorious. So many inventive ways to cause destruction, impaling/executing always felt so utterly gratifying. I really enjoyed the
Carnival bit- the shifts from past/present were a mindfuck in the best possible way
. I didn't like the emphasis on the Siphon, but I LOVED the ending.
The Angelus design is so PERFECT- she'd make a terrific next villain (PLEASE let this series live!) but if she chose Jenny as her host it's a bit strange- she was a creation of Jackie's imagination...
.

As far as the Patton complaints go, spot on. Didn't have nearly enough opportunities to speak to us, and the delivery was a bit more generic. Still, his vocal range is incredible. It's so funny- right after finishing, I went straight into New Game +, to attempt to max out all abilities. I also really appreciated the breaks in the action at the Mansion, and the whole
Mental Asylum
was a great metaphor for being trapped by The Darkness.

I shall try some Vendetta stuff maybe in a bit, but seriously thank you Digital Extremes. I had my doubts, but you did the series justice. Even if I felt the story wasn't on par with the first title, I very much enjoyed all of it. Glad to have gotten a last second OT up in time, and happy to read the discussion here. Cheers, GAF!

I just had to get this on video (forgive the cam quality), some of his lines are exquisite.
Is Enzo gay? (Darkness 2)
ibxRFXrt4Fw3pn.jpg

He greets you with: "Hey there, handsome. Oh, I didn't mean...it's just you know...you got nice hair."

"Chief. Man, there's nothing I admire more than a man who knows how to wear a mustache."

"Now, Fat Tony, if he lost some weight, I tell ya. He'd be a good-lookin' guy. Very good-looking guy."

"You got some nice guns...and them pistols are nice too."

After recording the video, my mom said, "he's definitely gay".

I like that they Paul Jenkins and DE got this little character detail in, and no one else has brought it up. Score one for non-stereotypical gay characters in videogames! Will bring this up when another "gay characters in videogames" list thread comes up.

She's very much real and that was the real her at the end. The Darkness did create illusions of her throughout but Jenny herself is real and she was trapped in Hell all along. I guess it could be asked why she was in Hell and why The Angelus was there, but we can assume the Darkness trapped them there.

I'm crying now from the Darkness 2 ending. It's just been such a journey for Jackie in these 2 games, I chose what was right for Jackie.

Don't know if I have it in me right now to check out the other ending. Maybe tomorrow.

Anyone who was saying the story or emotional weight isn't as good as the 1st, is out of their nostalgic mind.

CREDITS FINISHED but there's something else in post-credits, oh god crying again now :(

I want this moment to last forever...

EDIT: WAIT WTF WHAT HAVE THEY DONE NO NOOOOOOOOOO!

Finished the game a couple of days ago and it was pretty good. Short but entertaining all the way through. Not many people seem to be playing it though... I hope that doesn't mean the game is going to flop because the ending opened a door to a lot of possibilities in a sequel.

lol, emotional rollercoaster.

Anyway, more people need to play this.

OMG I feel like I need more fingers to play this game!

It's fantastic fun and beautifully brutal, but I feel like I'm doing finger gymnastics to pull off all these moves.

Yeah that moment after the credits was INCREDIBLY well done. I never wanted to push that button prompt. Does anyone know the name of the song that was playing during that? It was beautiful and sold the moment perfectly.

Man, this went by so quickly. I enjoyed it and think it's well worth playing. And it has some quality voice acting.

There's also some moments where the combat just clicked and it felt like attacks were flowing from one into the next. Maybe not enough but it felt great when it worked.

Neat game. Might have to go back and check out the first one.

the first one is a lot better, not that this one was bad but it's very simple in design in comparison and missing a majority of the stuff that made the first game so awesome.

It's successes and failures are kind of different from the first game, but it's good in it's own way.

I think the combat is better balanced and more satisfying in the second game. The first game handled the story telling better (and the second tries a similar approach just with less impact). After finishing it this weekend I'll agree that Patton's voice is not nearly as awesome as it was in the first game for reasons I don't really understand... The Darkness is more annoying in this one where it was more menacing in the first game.

Enjoyed the game though, for sure.

Just finished the game....

wow, that ending.... wow in so many levels ;_;

The game sure it's short, but at less they didn't drag it on just to make it longer... it had a good story and when they told us it the game ended... which is something I take any day over games dragging itself for unnecessary extra 2-3 hours.

The Gameplay is A BLAST... I'm going to have so much fun platinum it.

The Graphics style won me over after me disliking it when they first announce it.... but seriously it fits the game so well .

The music isn't beautifully hunting like the first one which is disappointing :(

back to that ending.... OMG, after the credits
I didn't want to press ( let her go ) .... it was so damn emotional ;_;

and when I did.... DAMN!!! I did not see this one coming!!! it's SO PERFECT now that Jackie present The Darkness in the world and Jenny present The Light.... this make the story even more interesting.

Question: why isn't many people playing this game right now? where are the fans of the first one? GUYS.... if you liked the first one then you own yourself to play this... for real!

If we didn't get The Darkness III... I'm blaming you guys :\

I'M BLAMING YOU

Will definitely check it out then.

I loved those moments where you could just explore and talk to people. Reminded me of the prison sequence in Butcher's Bay. Feels like at least some of that Starbreeze DNA's still there in the second game.

Then you're going to LOVE the first game. It has tons and tons of these stuff.

The most impactful scene from the first game will be ruined by playing the second one, unfortunately. Still will have a bunch of good moments, and The Darkness is a lot cooler as a character in the first game I think.

I hope there is a Darkness III, or I'll have blue balls of emotion.

I totally get people's complaints that the Darkness isn't as front-and-center in this sequel and there's less VO, but that's probably because he's been fully established in the first game. You know his strengths and limitations, you know how he works.

They have to juggle A LOT more characters in, like giving more attention to Johnny Powell, Knobby the Darkling (
did anyone else tear up at his demise? Also is he callled Knobby because he dies at the hands of a door?
), Victor, Vinnie, all the mafia dudes (
Dolfo as Adolf is so clever!
), Frank and Eddie (
I chose Eddie to die and then it's brought up later on :(
)and of course further the (post-humous?) relationship b/w Jackie and Jenny. Not to mention all their
mental hospital counterparts
.

Maybe because I loved the other characters so much, I didn't mind the Darkness not being as one-to-one, although I love
the Hell stage where he's just throwing relentless waves of weird humanoids and red darklings at you. That's the one bit where it gets really personal between Jackie and Darkness.

I laughed out loud when the darkling says.
We're free monkey! Let's fuck off and go to Vegas!" when Jackie got rid of his Darkness powers.

Zero Punctuation - Darkness 2

He liked it, shock and horror!

I thought the mafia side was done well, especially with the mansion ambush and
Aunt Sara
.
Being forced to make a choice between which of the mafia needed to be killed, and the effect their death has on the other person was a nice touch
. Making them likeable (and hilarious) I guess is "romantic" but it gave a much-needed change of tone from the overly dark cult dealings and Jackie's mental shenanigans.

I grabbed the game today on Amazon and imported it into Steam and I can't get past the initial screen. Just loads forever. It's been five minutes and counting. Anyone had any similar problems with it?

BTW, while I read Digital Foundry and Lens of Truth's PS3 and Xbox 360 comparison, I'm still having a hard time deciding which version is better.

i rented this game yesterday, never played the first.

it was a fun game, good length, cool cel-shaded look, fun combat. i really liked the voice acting and the writing. some of the extra non story line lines of dialog were hilarious. some really good stuff.

perfect rental, though i enjoyed it enough that i feel guilty i only donated 2 bucks to the cause.

good game.

And the sequel is a worthy successor to the original. Color me surprised. Anyway great game. Graphics, story and VA were top notch. Hope it won't be another 5 years until the 3rd part.

Darkness 2 producer goes over the "excellent moments of gore" [SPOILERS!]

iL5wHDC2iHTeE.jpg

While the Bragg one is great, I thought going right from the asylum to see the demon arm go all endoscope on the dude is a brilliant transition. Shows you how fucking gruesome the Darkness really is when it's doing its business and how disembodied Jackie really is. It's not just gory, but reflects on Jackie's lack of control.

As if he's sitting in a theatre watching a movie of his own life, except "everyone else in the theatre - they're screamin', cause they're watching a horror movie and you're not the hero; you're the monster".

I reinstalled the PhysX drivers or whatever that came with it and then it ran fine.

Beat the game yesterday. Spoilers for the ending:
I let the game sit with my arm around Jenny for like ten minutes hoping something would change! Did anyone else do that?
