is it just me or do some people take this forum way too seriously? Nothings really changed that i've noticed. Same shit, a few different posters.
I'll lay it down for all of you.
I'm an old timer on these forums and I've been here for awhile. What it boils down to is that some people have grown up and their sense of what's right and wrong has changed as they've matured. Whether or not you think that has a negative impact on the forum is up to you.
What is true is that during the initial run of the forum we had some pretty strict guidelines. I remember when profanity was severly limited. There was a time where spinoffs like ***-Ages had their place because they allowed far more freedom than what was allowed here.
And then we went through a considerable length of time where restrictions were pretty lax, and to some extent that had negative impact on "discussion", but I felt it made things far more lively. Some of the most memorable topics came from this era.
The forums never used to be about making sure the quality control of discussion was intact, but about having fun and that shift has hurt the forums to a degree. We've turned this place from a fun sideshow circus to almost serious business, and I agree, it's just not the same.
But these things work in cycles and people will be able to test the limits of what they can say and do, and humorous and entertaining events will result from this. The only thing that can kill this forum is if we regulate it into the ground and I think some in the administration have seen this, and begun to make changes and so. The bannable catchphrases are one example.
Calling for premature death is nothing short of melodrama. So shut the fuck up.

GAF dead? Nah. I do find the rise and rise of emulation talk a tad disturbing... considering that this forum seems to feature highly amongst journos and those from the gaming community (working, not gamers)

hrm... annoying catch phrases, long ass acronyms, and stupid posting gimmicks all are less annoying than reading a stupid post about how the PSP's sold 12 more units than the Wonderswan in Tanzania, thus putting it on the path for handheld supremacy worldwide. It's idiocy, veiled under relatively good grammar and punctuation, that make this place annoying at times - not the stupid phrases or trends.

I was always stunned that someone as pathetic as Drinky was a mod in the first place, he was worse than every idiot on the forums combined, and yet the mods backed him? The logic for backing him was always flawed and borderline retarded, and I was very tempted to leave and never come back because such a load of crap was permitted for one idiot and condemed if by any other idiots. I can't help but think of Animal Farm when I think of that situation.

Its funny cuz I normally hate annoying catch phrases from other forums (I frequent only two others) but around here I enjoy them. I genuinely feel ours is better, and they have a good dash of personality. Sure, anything is annoying when its abused, but I know two lurkers who's been waiting forever to be admitted who constantly say how funny our GAF-speak is.
