The Division Beta Thread: Make Manhattan Great Again

The Division beta on Xbox One is a gorgeous beast - bringing some of the most striking volumetric fog effects we've seen on any platform to date. But before you get started, you might want to check some of the options Ubisoft includes in its "Visuals" menu. Image quality can be improved quite visibly by tweaking two settings in particular: chromatic aberration, and image sharpen.

The first is a toggle. Chromatic aberration is a post-process effect (much like bloom, HDR or motion blur) that's enabled by default on this Xbox One beta. To date, the effect has appeared in a raft of high-profile titles, from a rather heavy-handed use in Bloodborne and The Order 1886, to the light dab applied in Grand Theft Auto 5. It's designed to mimic the properties of a camera lens, taking the high contrast points visible on-screen, and splitting them into their red, green and blue constituent parts.

The result gives a slightly decayed look The Division is going for - but it might not suit all tastes. The good news? For those who don't fancy it, Ubisoft has you covered, and this toggle cuts the effect out from all gameplay, and also the The Division's unique augmented HUD.

It's an option we hope to see from more developers in future on PS4 and Xbox One. This calls to mind another extensive post-effects menu included in console versions of Project Cars (featuring a whole range of toggles, for god rays and vignetting too).

However, whether enabled or not, this will likely have no affect on your frame-rates - only image quality. If you're not certain, it's worth experimenting with this toggle, and seeing how the results hold up for you. Curiously the 'sharpen image' slider also has a big impact on image quality. It directly controls the strength of The Division's anti-aliasing method on Xbox One - a post process technique. Sliding this up to 75 creates a noticeably clearer horizon as you sprint down New York's ruined, wintry streets. It alleviates some of the residual blur we get with its AA approach, but there's a catch.

Veering towards 100 per cent on the scale, a white halo effect is apparent on stair-step edges - and the overall balance of this setting will ultimately come down to personal preference. It's unusual to get these options on console, and it's great news they're added this time.

More so than most games, there's a way to get a better look out of The Division on console if you're willing to experiment with each. For more technical info on The Division, Digital Foundry will be looking at Xbox One, PS4 and PC versions (for which the beta starts Friday at 12pm GMT) very soon. Stay tuned!

Have a funny feeling that after the 12 story missions and random events, dark zone will be the end game.
I don't know what people expect from this and why they are constantly worry about it.You want know what the REAL end game will be?

Constantly repeating a Mission,an Area,a Raid or Dark Zone in hopes that the RNG Gods give you a good loot drop.If that repetitive grind is going to be fun that's left up to the game's developers AND the taste of the individual player but that's what ultimately these type of games boil down to in terms of "end game content".

"Before the beta starts, we will send you a notification email that your Uplay account has been activated."

Any way to preload the game on PC? Haven't receveid the email yet.

Cheers.

If we ignore that huge Beta Code begging thread that shows people at least want to try the game, and the fact that only XB1 players can play the Beta right now than sure reception is "tepid" right now.

Most us are at work/school or are waiting for the PC/PS4 version Beta tommorow.

So what you are saying is, if we just look at the people who've actually played the Beta, the response is tepid? :-)

Because code begging and people who haven't gotten a chance to play it yet does not equal legitimate response to the quality of the Beta.

can you stream using the twitch app on xbox one or is it blocked?

Its not working atm. It gives a generic error code about servers but that always happens with beta's. Looks like the didnt enable it for some reason. Same with recording clips and making screenshots. You can make them but they dont show up on the activity feed etc.

So I've still not received my email from the code I put into the division website 3 days ago for PS4. Is there anything else I can do, getting worried here and I've already paid off my sleeper agent edition off.

I'm the same.

Got my xbox code though.

Game seems ok so far, the shooting feels clunky to me, not responsive enough. Is anyone else experiencing the same thing?

I really like the snow effects though and the radar ability seems cool, although nothing new.

You've clearly not played WD.

yes i have, and i loved the visuals in a raining night

seriously, can't believe such an underpowered console can pull off these graphics in an open world setting with no loading screens.

it's a fucking joke it is

i didnt tried yet, already downloaded the beta, but gonna try as soon as i get home from work, maybe i am too harsh based on compressed screenshots that doesnt make justice to the game

Finished the first side mission, teh first story mission and did a couple of side things on the map. I really like it. It's more "looty" than Destiny and I like that. I'll try the Dark Zone tommorow.

I thought the same thing at first. Kept playing and it feels better.

Obviously, the gunplay isn't going to feel like a Bungie creation. But it isn't terrible. Feels like Mass Effect.

Hmmm pretty disappointing looks like no Dark Zone expansion. Which is a no buy then because to me thats the end game. PVPing shit.

It looks pretty much like Watch_Dogs to me.

People are worried about it because there needs to be something to keep bringing us back for more. Different boss battles (and mechanics) is there a horde mode? Are there gear sets to obtain with credits received from "heroic" (hard) missions, is there a mode for more than 4 player co-op.

Right now we know you can repeat missions on hard and dark zone. I don't care if there is a grind (I am a fan of the grind). There needs to be more talked about pertaining the issue of end game. They keep saying they are not ready to talk about end game yet.

Underpowered implies either console is way weaker than another console. The Xbox one and ps4 power gap isn't even close to as bad as the ps2 and Xbox so that isn't what you mean. I'm guessing you're comparing to pc setups which is absolutely pointless since consoles are always gonna be weaker than higher end pc hardware. I remember reading post in like 2012 of people thinking the consoles would have like 2 gigs of ram and completely underestimating the power in general. I guess the point to my rebuttal is that your comment is needless and comes off hostile for no reason.

you guys are so cute when someone says something slightly negative about a console.

i was making fun of the guy calling the graphics a joke.
i am on your side.

well,at least until I install it on my PC and play tomorrow, then you guys can eat it :P

I understand but like I said in my post it just comes off needlessly hostile

Is there a downside to maxing out the sharpness on XB1?

This is a great comparison... i've played a dozen plus hours of the Alpha and will with the Beta this weekend and i couldnt quite put my finger on what game the shooting most felt like. Mass Effect is it! It's got a little Uncharted... a little Last of Us... but Mass Effect is pretty spot on in terms of "jankyness" and bullet impact etc.

You're right, one does get "used to it" after a few hours of playing... but those who are all about accuracy and efficiency will still be left mildly frustrated in my opinion.
