The DmC Bug

Try Enslaved. It's got one of the deepest, most intricate combat systems in the genre. There are some really impressive videos out there with some insane combos. The only downside is that the platforming can be very, very tricky at times.

I am not talking about pause combos I am talking about actual moves. Moves like Calibur, Maximum Bet, Showdown and Shuffle etc. Those moves would not be possible on this system because they can only work on a hard lock on. You can't do back, forward inputs on soft lock on without it leading to even more inaccuracies in the combat.

As far as the style moves go they run into the exact same problem. Input to do Rainstorm in DmC is hold down X plus A while in previous games its just O. Even then it has less moves and no real way to add more without reworking the system. They can't move forward with the combat system without replacing one of the dodge buttons with a substantial modifier button. And even then they need to bring back Taunt, Royal Guard or the EX system.

And you are not choosing between the style moves any more you are choosing from the angel/demon stance. The difference is that you have to tap a single button in DMC4 to change buttons in DmC you have to hold them.

DmC is also more lenient with a ton of things by design, so you don't really need to use any of its mechanics very optimally to complete the game. Stuff like Osiris being able to pick up everything below you, how much of Aquila is automated, the grapples, all the AOE moves, the amount of i-frames on dodges, being able to parry just about everything, etc. If you were to play DMC3 with DmC controls it would feel incredibly awful, just like if you had DMC3 controls with the DmC moveset the game would be pretty easy.

It might just be a design issue instead of a control issue.

But there's nothing stopping them from adding more Button-Pause-Button combos, right? It seems like it was just a specific design decision to only have one pause combo for each weapon.

I guess my question isn't what did they do that they didn't do in DmC, but what did that do that they couldn't do with DmC's control scheme. You could always add more weapons and combos.

Lock-on. Anything else?

Does it count for anything that DmC implements all those style moves you mention into one moveset instead of spreading them throughout different styles and making the player choose between them?

pause button are fundamentally flawed in this type of game because they slow down the pace of the game, and cannot be buffered like other inputs. Id admire the weapon switch options during the the pause, but it still feels limited to me.

having the style modifier and the attack button separate makes sense because it allows a greater number of attack combinations than DmC's system.
