The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim -- First Gameplay Trailer!

After careful consideration, I have decided that these will be the 18 skills:

COMBAT: Block, Heavy Armor, Free Running, Smithing, One-Handed, Two-Handed
STEALTH: Lockpick, Alchemy, Light Armor, Speechcraft, Marksman, Sneak
MAGIC: Restoration, Alteration, Enchanting, Illusion, Conjuration, Destruction

Has anyone uploaded an mp3 of the tune in the trailer? If not i have a version i could upload

Well, we won't be able to get a legit soundtrack until we get closer to 11/11/11...god, that day is going to be one of the best days this year...

They haven't aged well, imo. I never got past the first dungeon in Arena (I had no fucking idea where I was going), and I keep dying in the first dungeon in Daggerfall, too. It's slightly easier to navigate, but the controls are so clunky by today's standards that it's really hard.

If you think that's clunky, what'd you think of Daggerfall's 3D dungeon map? :-p

You mean like this? lol

That was part of the fun of Daggerfall though, being hopelessly lost in the bowels of a dungeon for about a week of playing time.

Yep, I got turned around and lost a bunch of times. Hell just trying to navigate by map would get confusing after a while. Lots of loot (mostly vendor trash) to haul out though.

The Elder Scrolls theme from 1:20 to 1:30 is just glorious.

Cannot stop watching the trailer - there's no point even releasing a GOTY verison, because "it's already here".

After watching in the trailer in the OP it seems they still have those dumb "vibrate screen on damage" effects and some weird animations (though it looks to be much improved) and some other things carried over from the older games.

Though to be honest, I'm more interested than I was before. It looks like they're actually trying to improve upon the complaints of Oblivion.

Let's just say I'm appreciating Morrowind and Oblivion a lot more now. :lol

You're probably right. I expected them to condense the Armor-skills into one, and use perks to differentiate (they could even re-add Unarmored and Medium Armor then), but I'm not sure what they could add if that's the case.

If you haven't seen this yet, I highly recommend it. It's a little puzzle from Game Informer that involves translating the Dragon language that Bethesda created for Skyrim, and it's worth the brain-bending to get to the solution. That, or you can just find the translation in the comments on the page. Either way it's completely amazing.

Have any podcasts talked about this trailer at all? Im after some discussion on Skyrim but so far Weekend Confirmed and GB have let me down (unless i completely blanked over a section)

I will be picking this game up on Day 1.

I actually liked Oblivion slightly more than Morrowind, except for the leveling system, which was absolutely horrible. I don't have a PC even now capable of playing Oblivion so it was all consoles for me, but I still had a fun time with it.

If this game can give us more diverse dungeons, environments, and not completely butcher the leveling, it may just be the best ES game of all.

I'm seriously thinking of picking up the GOTY edition of Oblivion. I don't even think I ever formally beat Oblivion... I mainly did the side-quests that I remember. Is the best way to play the console version is by never sleeping?

Jesus christ in a birchback canoe I wish I had a PC capable of running Oblivion with all of those gorgeous mods.

If you can come up with < $500 you can build a system that would absolutely crush Oblivion and most likely Skyrim. Watch for deals, etc. I got a premium GTX 460 1gb for $130 a couple weeks ago, and any modern quad-core cpu would be great ($80 and up). Throw in some ram and a mobo, and baby you've got a stew going!

Hehe nice AD reference made me lol :p.

heheheh awesome. Daggerfall was my first Elder Scrolls and i remember how much i loved getting lost in these randomly generated dungeons.

One day i finally found a magic bell, if played I could fly! But sometimes it was impossible to escape from some caves... but if you run fast enough against the wall you could trough!! So many bugs, so much fun! :D

Looks like I may need to look into the New PC thread and check on this. I may can find a way to swing for a $500 PC, but I'd hate for it to be outdated too quickly for the newer games that will be coming out soon.

I imagine this game is going to look glorious on a PC. I seriously want to consider getting Oblivion now so I can play with all of the really nice mods... Although I'd want to play it on my big TV. I know it's usually better to play with Keyboard and Mouse, but can Oblivion on PC be used with a 360 controller without much difficulty? I don't want to sit at my desk playing the game.

Honestly, this console-first development trend has dropped the general PC upgrade requirements to a positively glacial pace. If you sensibly spend $500ish on a new PC this year, it'll get you through at least until the next console cycle happens.

Unlike Fallout 3, there isn't any support for gamepads built into Oblivion. You might have some luck with something like Xpadder. It's what made Beyond Good & Evil bearable for me.

Speaking of Daggerfall, wasn't there someone working on a graphics mod for the game? I remember someone posted some pics of it having actual 3D geometry and models.

Awesome trailer but:

theelderscrollsv_skyrikm25.gif

This is a really shitty way to kill a dragon, but I'm guess that I'm just used to dragons being godlike beasts that humans can't go toe to toe with.

Nah, that part was still whack.

I just don't like how the dragon flies over the human and then get's struck in the heart. It doesn't even attack the human in that part.

Now if the dude cleverly got under the dragon while it was prepping its fire breath from the ground then I'd be cool with it.

Anyway I can't wait to play this game.

Based on what? Nearly every mythology and certainly every video game has protagonists who slay the dragon. Even RPGs have a party of 4 chumps taking one out.

I played Two Worlds II this week and thanks to that, my purchase of Skyrim was EASILY secured!

TW2 is not even up to par with Oblivion, it was spectacularly craptastic to me.

I think he means it just looked crappy, I kind of thought so. The dragon basically drops down and shows it's vital spot and the guy swings with the direction of the dragon to kill it. It looks really strange I agree.

I was referring to the 'godlike creatures that humans can't go toe to toe with' thing.

He'd been fighting that Dragon the entire trailer, so probably it was a lengthy battle. In all likelihood, that final hit was what brought it down, not because the PC hit a 'sweet spot'. Hit something with a sword enough times and it's going to die.

Yep. The brave knight with sword and shield in hand going up against a massive dragon is basically a fantasy staple.

It's always been pretty amusing, though, from a logistical standpoint. At least a magic user I can see having success against something like a dragon, since it doesn't involve trying to strike at a hundred-foot tall fire-breathing creature with a four-foot long weapon.

Maybe the Dragons live by an honor code. :lol

Or maybe they don't like their meat charred.

Yeah it just didn't make sense to me, like they just wanted to kill a dragon. It was a lazy and non clever way to kill one.

It's not a big deal though, but you know.

Wouldn't an airborne, circle strafing dragon be boring to actually face? It seems to me that the dragon's behaviour in the trailer would benefit gameplay for everyone, regardless of class.

Well sure, it's more entertaining, and I'm not even saying it's bad design. It just looks goofy, and it always will, but that's not unique to video games. The issue with dragons is they're enormous, they have a long-range attack, and they can fly, so you're screwed in almost every scenario. Tough to make someone human-sized take on one of those things and not have it look pretty silly.

I'm still really curious how the dragon-fighting will work in Skyrim, since that will make up a significant part of it. Or how the dragons themselves will work, for that matter. Do they instantly aggro upon seeing you? You are after all going around slaying their bros.

Right, it's fine for gameplay. Whatever they do to have us kill dragons is cool.

But in the trailer they can do something interesting versus that gif which to me is lame.

Man...we need another trailer or something to bring back life into this thread.

So, this is just something that has been on my mind for a long time. I know why Bethesda always has TES start the player off as a prisoner. I mean, it sorta makes sense. But do you think it would be better if the player is shown as a baby first? Kind like Fallout 3 (except you would decide your player's looks and characteristics first and then it would go into his birth since they wouldn't have gene-detection technology in the ES universe). I think it would be a nice little change. Imagine, if you will: They show a baby being born (perhaps as a silhouette so they can leave the parents a mystery) while a voice over tells of a prophesy that one day, a hero would come to fend off the dragons' return. Or maybe do something with the carved mural instead of using silhouettes. They can show depictions of the baby being born and him growing and training and whatever else it takes to become a worthy hero. Then maybe we can start the game at one of his training sessions. It would be a good way to incorporate a tutorial for new players. Then once the training session is complete, something could happen that begins the main quest of the game. I personally think it's a little disappointing that the hero always is a criminal in TES games. I'm not completely opposed to the idea of him/her being in prison, but it would be a nice change to try something new.

Sorry for the bump, but there has seriously been a lack of info these past few weeks. I hope there is some some sort of coverage soon.

I think Pete Hines said that there would be more information within the next 30 days a week or so ago.

E3 is in 2 months so I think everyone is holding off on information.

I'm actually pretty content with the amount of Skyrim info that's been released. I mean, we shouldn't get to see too much of it, spoiling some of the surprises and whatnot.

I'd like to see a dungeon playthrough or something, but other than that, I don't know that I need to see more than we've been shown.

I'm fine with the info so far as well. E3 isn't very far away which is when I expect Todd Howard to show it off like Fallout 3 (that was such an awesome preview he did on G4 with the Rock-It Launcher).
