The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

F12 using the steam overlay?

Unless there is a way to tell Steam to take uncompressed pictures, no thanks. I got Fraps to work fine as long as I don't alt+tab out.

I turned on AO through the method that was once listed here, and it looks great. I have found an issue, however, with the AO that looks corny in certain environments so I'm going to shut it off.

Specs: i5 2500k oc 4.0, 570 oc, 8 gigs RAM

When I'm underground, the game sometimes adds a haze to simulate torch smoke or something. Anyway, everything fades out in the haze but the ambient occlusion on the walls and ceilings. It looks pretty silly, and once I figured out just exactly what I was looking at I laughed. Anyone else using AO?

For some reason, no matter how I change my config to increase the quality of the shadows, they stay the same blocky mess.

Any ideas?

After messing around a bit, it seems like uGridsToLoad has the largest impact on framerate outside of stuff like MSAA.

The default, at least on Ultra settings, is 5. You can go higher on a save, but NOT lower without corrupting it.

It seems to determine the amount of land "blocks" that are rendered in high-LOD around your character.

Good ones. Mostly 60+ everywhere, with those weird dips in asinine areas.
Thanks, will give them a shot.

So if I use the console command , save then quit/reload I won't break the achievements, right?

I just want to give my character speed when walking.

I used Print Screen earlier which saves bitmaps to the "steamapps\common\skyrim" folder.

have you tried the fix posted above? I've got a noticeable framedrop after that so I turned it off.

So is there any way to make distant trees not look like shit? I already set my LOD distances to 10000000. It looks to me like they aren't accepting shadows after a certain point. What setting affects that?

Yeah I've learnt not to mess with Ugrids, but I would love to know how TheOctagon got his shadows to look like that. I saw them for the few minutes I got to play with his config before shit hit the fan. They were pretty. Well, pretty compared to the Space Invaders shit we have at the moment.

Holy hell I finally got the shadows to look as decent as this engine is going to allow, what a fucking difference.

Had to set all 3 shadow map settings way the hell up to 8192

iShadowMapResolutionSecondary
iShadowMapResolutionPrimary
iShadowMapResolution

and up the distance to 8000

fShadowDistance

I do think the game looks incredible at times.

But technically, Witcher 2 blows it away in so many key areas.

Yeah, except for "walk 200 feet -> loading screen". I loved TW2, but these comparisons don't make any sense, both are working with a completely different technology.

I need to boost my draw distance or LOD radius or something. Some land at what feels like medium distance looks like total crap, especially around the water.

Suggested tweaks? The game is running smoothly right now on mine at High so I'm willing to up a few values to improve the visuals.

We're talking about aesthetics, not radius/size of in-game areas. :P

Well, you can start messing with uGridsToLoad, but you're going to need to back up your saves, and once you decide on a value there's no going back (for now).

iBlurDeferredShadowMask=1
fInteriorShadowDistance=3000.0000
fShadowDistance=8000.0000
iShadowMapResolutionSecondary=8192
iShadowMapResolutionPrimary=8192
iShadowFilter=4

Try these settings.

Got it. Seems pretty tricky.

I'm currently debating starting over in the game anyway -- I've only just finished the first 'temple' (with the
golden claw
) and I realized I'm probably killing people a little early and not getting some quests that might be around. And I shouldn't have
told the girl about the fake letter.
But we'll see -- I really need to stop worrying about being perfect about everything haha

Which one, specifically?

uGridstoLoad set to 9 or 11 is great for screenshots but I get thrown to desktop when I run around from area to area. I presume when the game tries to load a new area.

Do they go in Skyrim.ini or SkyrimPrefs.ini ?

This seems to improve the shadows of trees/leaves but make the shadows on people look worse. That could just be me. At least the frame rate doesn't change. Cheers.

None of these shadow settings seems to change my shadows at all.

Do I have to reload the area (go inside then back out) or something before the changes will show?

Edit: Went inside and my framerate dropped to 7, but hey, I had pixel-perfect shadows! Outside nothing changed, same old blocky mess. I give up for now.

So I'm really put off by the game right now. I had a configuration that gave me great looking shadows and a decent performance (outside of the cities, god knows what's going on there) but due to mistake on my end I messed up the ini files. So I go back to Skyrim Nexus to redownload the files only to find that they for some unexplained reason have deleted them. Now I can't get the game in a decent shape anymore, and the more I try the more unstable it seems to become. Right now it keeps crashing every time I load it up. Getting New Vegas to run decently was a whole lot easier than this...

Which of the config files did you put them in?

Skyrim or SkyrimPrefs ?

do both.

I've put it in SkyrimPrefs in both My Games and Skyrim directory. Got framerate hit.

So this game is getting more and more unstable the farther out I explore it seems.

Didn't have a single crash for about the first 9 hours, and now I've had maybe a dozen in the last 3 including a mountain pass I literally could not go through because the game would freeze every time

Oh and my frame rate is all over the place in this one forest. Sometimes dropping into the teens and then shooting back up to ~60 for no reason.

Hate to say it but I'm about to revert all these extra settings and put it on high or something just so I can play without being so paranoid.

Initially the game was super stable.

But after messing with configs and Ugrid and what have not, the game is a lot more unstable.

Mods I want.

equipment compare: Compare current highlighted item with one currently equipped. Not +/-, full stats for both items.

avatar equipment screen: Be able to drag and drop equipment onto an avatar. Just something simple that says the item name (stats when highlighted) and lets you know if you have an item equipped in each available slot, like rings and such. I hate feeling like I forgot to equip a ring and checking by scrolling down the list and looking for 2 equipped accessories is annoying.

And of course the mod that changes the leveling system to a more xp based one where you gain xp for kills, quests, etc. and when leveling up you choose which stat to put points into. Oblivion had a good one for this.

Clickable menus: Be able to use the mouse on any menu item anywhere!

Right now it seems most of the mods are focused on visual changes, which I guess it is easier and quicker to mess with textures. Hopefully some gameplay mods start showing up.

Also, I have had some stability issues, several crashed to desktop. I see some uGrids complaints, is this related. I changed mine early on and never connected the two.
edit: anyway to revert back to default ugrids without loosing my saves?

Can you please share your radeon-pro settings ? I forced the Oblivion profile and set AF, but I didn't notice any improvements.

Thanks

Have you tried disabling Radeon pro and just using Skyrim's in-game settings?

Just finished the mission that made me a full member of the companions. SOOOO satisfying. Now to go make some dragon my bitch and get my new shout.

Heh, that's always a risk when you're messing around and experimenting.

Most of what you're reading in here hasn't been verified or tested by more than a handful of people.

I have the game running acceptably at 1680x1050 with the config generator set to Ultra (FXAA in place of MSAA and 8x AF) and a handful of tweaks (shadow resolution settings at 4k, iWaterMultiSamples=2, bTreesReceiveShadows=1, bDrawLandShadows=1, iWaterReflectHeight and Width=1024, and uiMaxSkinnedTreesToRender=40). Bumping up the shadow resolution to 8k sees my GTX 570 run out of memory. Even at 8k, though, the shadows leave much to be desired.

How long until we see an inventory mod that gives everything a weight value of 1?

Is there any way to add motion blur legitimately (so Steam achievements still work)? Kind of like the intro where the dragon shows up the first time while you're on the block with your head. Of course not in that extreme manner, but I like how smooth everyone looks. When looking around normally, everything seems so 'harsh'. It's especially the turning where the harshness is noticeable.

I think console command
player.modav carryweight x

Ah, I just noticed that in the OP. Must have missed it the first time around. Cheers. :)

Is there a way to turn selfshadows on characters off? They looks ugly, especially outside when sun is high and just mess with my pics and overall look.

Another question.
Texture mods [for armors and cloths] dont work for me, anyone knows why?

Can anyone here post the default ini configuration settings as I forgot to do a backup and now the Frame rate is unstable (doh!). Thanks in advance :)

In case anyone has more ugrid problems, do this as i posted earlier:

Delete the two ini files.
Let the game load up the default ini files and try running the game from your last save.

Another thing you could try is this:

1. Don't change the ugrid number from the one you have used before. (ie. Say you were using ugrid 11 and now changed it to 9, go back to 11)
2. Run the game. Load up the last save that used the ugrid settings that you used before changing down. (ie. The save that ran 11 ugrid)
3. Alt-tab out and edit the ugrid settings to a lower number
4. Open up the in-game console and type in 'refini' to refresh the ini settings.
5. Save and exit the game
6. Then run the game again

I've done this method but it didn't work for me.

Just delete the current ini files and let the game detect your hardware again.
